President’s Message
The spring season of events is underway, with monthly continuing education
opportunities for our dental hygiene community. This April, we will be having a
breakfast event with a Oral Pathology review to take place at Rady’s Childrens
Hospital. We are excited to try this new venue, and hope our members enjoy
the change of scenery.
In addition to our CE’s, there are also interesting volunteer opportunities, like an
opportunity to take a trip on the U.S. Mercy as a dental hygiene volunteer. Details can be found in our Bulletin and on our website. We will also be making
and dispensing Women’s tote bags for those who like to participate and help out.
This month we will also be voting in a new group of officers to sit on our Executive Board. If you
have ever considered volunteering, and want to make a difference in your profession, please attend our March 24th meeting and we will put your name on the Ballot. Being a part of the San Diego Dental Hygiene board is rewarding. Not only do you make new friends and network among
other professionals in the same field, but you also learn about how the political process works
and how decisions are made.
Finally... I would like to congratulate the students that are on the verge of graduation, or who
have recently graduated. As an educator, I get to witness first hand the stress and hard work
these students put forth to earn their degree. When the students are at the end of their rope, I often hear the phrase “keep your eye on the prize”. Once you’ve been working in the profession for
many years, it’s hard to remember what the “prize” is. Burn out is so prevalent. Therefore, I would
like to personally thank the students for reminding me how lucky I am to be part of a giving, growing and rewarding profession. They continually motivate me to be better and not to take for granted my degree or my job.
Congrats Students!

U.S. Navy Humanitarian Mission
The U.S. Navy will be conducting two humanitarian missions this year on two separate
hospital ships; the USNS Mercy and the USNS Comfort from April to September. The
USNS Mercy will be traveling to Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and the Philippines. The
USNS Comfort will be traveling to 11 countries - Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Dominica, Honduras, Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican
Republic. The U.S. Navy is in need of civilian dental hygienists to come onboard and
take part in the mission. The UCSD Pre-Dental Society (PDS) is a non-governmental
organization that is able to serve as a direct channel to put on interested dental hygienists with the Navy's approval.
We are looking for interested dental hygienists to participate in the missions. The minimum commitment is two weeks. You will be responsible for only your airfare to and
from the mission sites. The U.S. Navy will provide room and board onboard the hospital ship. The application fee is $250 (by check) and will ONLY be cashed if selected by
the U.S. Navy to participate. If interested, please contact Justin Montenegro
at jmontenegro.pds@gmail.com or 619-920-3286 for more information as well as an
