President’s Message
Our spring season of continuing education seminars is almost over. Take advantage of
getting your units now, before it is too late. We are excited about our upcoming April
seminar taking place at Rady’s Childrens Hospital, thanks to Elisabeth Lohse, RDA,
who offered to serve as our host.
We also want to give a huge thank you to Jack Grimsley from Scripps Oral Pathology
for sponsoring one of our speakers. Amber Riley, RDH, will be reminding us of our oral
pathology and what we should be aware of.
This upcoming May, we will be inaugurating our new group of officers. Brad Cushman, incoming president has been an active board member since his graduation from SWC. This event will be taking place at
Patterson’s in Sorrento Valley and will feature a lecture on hypnosis and ways to talk and relax our patients.
I would also like to thank all those who volunteered last month at the five different sealant clinics held
throughout San Diego. Part of our mission as health care providers is to offer our services to those in
need. Community service and outreach is paramount to our educating our community and improving the
overall health of our population.
Finally, I would like to invite all those hygienists who have not been able to see first hand how decisions
are made in our profession to visit us at the annual House of Delegates being held this year at Harrah’s
Casino in San Diego. More information on this will appear in our next Bulletin.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE
On Saturday, February 28th 2015, the San Diego County Dental Hygiene Society volunteered at
the "Give Kids a Smile" event. The American Dental Association along with First 5 San Diego and
Share the Care, put together this event to provide oral health screenings, treatment and education to children in our community and they were able to see about 300 kids! This countywide
event was held at 6 different locations. SDCDHS’s President, Darcie Bell, RDH, BS and Community Chair, Krystlelyn Paras, RDH participated by providing sealants and fluoride varnish to underprivileged kids at the Chula Vista location. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this
event successful!
Remember wonderful volunteers are always an important asset at these community events to
make it possible to provide the much-needed health services in the community and address public health issues. We hope you will volunteer your time at the next community service event!

The California Dental Hygienists’ Association (CDHA) Board of Trustees and
the ‘Voice of Dental Hygiene’
The CDHA Board of Trustees met on Saturday March 21 and Sunday, March 22, 2015, in Los
Angeles, CA. The weekend started with a Membership/Leadership Workshop which focused on
the perception of members, potential members and future colleagues. The workshop, led by
Laura Birchett, Chair of the CDHA Membership Taskforce included discussion and work regarding CDHA’s brand – the question posed and for further research “What does CDHA mean to our
stakeholders?” Trustees, officers and council members were fully engaged and excited to move
CDHA in a direction that meets future needs and opportunities.
The board convened their meeting in the afternoon and made recommendations to the House of
Delegates on one proposed by-law amendment and six proposed resolutions, which includes a
proposed balanced budget. Members can access information regarding the upcoming House of
Delegates business through their component trustees and in the www.cdha.org Members Only
Section.
Additionally, the Board voted to support the following legislation:
AB 768 (Thurmond, Bloom, Senator Leno) – Tobacco Free Baseball Act.
SB 203 (Monning) – Sugar-sweetened beverage warning labels.
AB 648 (Low) - Virtual Dental Home.
To follow this and other dental profession related legislation, visit www.cdha.org for the latest updates. The CDHA Board also voted to endorse Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla (D) Dist.7 in a
runoff election for state Senate to be held May 19, 2015.
The board also received updates from the Membership Taskforce as well as the Infrastructure
Taskforce, both of which also met during the busy weekend. Membership Taskforce has been
appointed for an additional year to continue their research regarding CDHA branding, increased
component support, educator relationships, dental hygiene program support, CDHA community
outreach opportunities and member benefits. Infrastructure Taskforce has provided a new Strategic Direction document intended to support and guide CDHA and CDHA programs. Infrastructure Taskforce will
host this year’s HOD issues forum providing an overview of survey and collected information regarding CDHA structure and possible future directions. Delegates will be requested to engage
and provide feedback.
Nominations are open for President-Elect, Vice President of Membership and Professional Development, Secretary/Treasurer, Speaker of the House and ADHA Delegates. Please contact Immediate Past President, Nadine Lavell, RDH, MS at nlavellrdh@gmail.com for more information.
This terrific opportunity is open to all CDHA members.
