Job Description:
This is an unique practice, in that it operates out of a purpose-built office suite, built into a
private home in the Village of Anmore. The office entrance is at ground level with full
wheelchair accessibility. The reception area is well appointed with seats for up to 6 patients,
although they are very seldom all occupied. This is because I have operated to a strict
appointment schedule: if a patient is scheduled for 2 PM they are seen at 2 PM for the
amount of time allotted – no more.
The patients all understand this and so the vast majority arrive 2 minutes before appointment
time, and leave immediately on time. I have found that my patients are just as respectful of
my time as I am of theirs, by setting clear expectations and boundaries.
The physician office area is equipped with the physician’s desk, and two patient chairs,
positioned so that there are no ‘barriers’ between physician and patient. Within this office area
is also a regular examination table that can be partitioned by a curtain. This is for ‘limited’
physical examinations. In the adjacent room is a typical office examination room with all the accoutrements that
you would expect to find in any medical office. This is where ‘complete’ physical examinations and
minor surgical procedures have been performed.
There is marked parking outside for up to 4 patient vehicles. However, since the turnaround is
fast they are seldom all occupied.
My practice has been at this location since 2002, when I left a typical strip mall office, and
designed and built an office in my ground-level basement. Many of the patients have been
with me for over 20 years. My patients (including new ones) actually enjoy a short drive into
the ‘country’, where they discover a more leisurely pace of consultation. Eagle Ridge Hospital
is 5 minutes away; Royal Columbian Hospital is about 20 minutes away. Patients come from
points between downtown Vancouver to Mission, Langley and South Surrey. (At one time a
patient used to come from 100 Mile House!).
The present incumbent has 15 minute appointment slots from 12 noon to 5 pm and the office
is open Monday through Thursday. The MOA begins her day at 09:30 and I usually start at
the same time doing paper-work at a leisurely pace.
1 I do not belong to an on-call group but out-of-hours calls default at first to the answering
machine which gives my cell phone number. The answering message encourages patients to
call only if they are encountering a serious health problem that won’t wait until the next
working day. As a result, I am almost never called. And no – patients don’t just drop by the
house, unless they are bringing gifts!
The demographic of the practice is mainly middle to upper middle class, by which I mean they
tend mostly to be financially comfortable and in professional occupations. (They don’t hesitate
to pay for private services.) There is a significant Korean population in the practice. I have
been told that this is because, even though there is a language barrier, they like the fact that I
am willing to spend time with them and to advocate for them.
I actively discourage drug abusers, and so there are none in the practice.
I adopted the OSCAR EMR system in 2011 and there are no longer any paper records. IT
service is provided by some very nice people who go by the name of NERD! My present MOA
is greatly loved for her affable manner and efficiency by all patients, and she would love to
continue to work in this office.
I have an excellent working relationships with just about all specialty groups as does my
MOA, Josey, with their MOAs. The result is that we seldom have any difficulty in getting
patients seen by specialists in a timely manner.
A new incumbent would have the opportunity to take over my roles as Aviation Medical
Examiner for both Transport Canada and the US Federal Aviation Authority. I have also
sought to maximize my billings from non-MSP sources.
On a personal level I am at an age where I have made a decision to retire, but I would be
happy to provide locum coverage as needed for whoever takes over the practice. I’m also
recognizing the need to ‘downsize’ my living quarters. If a replacement physician decides that
they wish to buy the house at current market value, that is definitely negotiable. (Your office in
your home becomes a tax-deductible expense!)
This practice would suit a variety of situations, for example:
• An older MD who wants to scale back yet keep their hand in.
• A physician who wishes to practice from their own home while maintaining proximity to
their family.
• A wife-husband team who wanted to share the work-load, while expanding the office
hours and patient load. (Yesterday we received 5 calls from would-be new patients).
Physicians who are seriously interested are very welcome to come and take a look around.
Compensation Type: What you make is yours for the first 4 months except for your share of the MOA’s wages.
Beyond that all is negotiable. Basically, need office expenses covered and a nominal rent for the office space.
