It was a Thursday morning. I had just left the gym and was checking my messages as many do when they have been away from their mobile device for an entire hour, which is an issue in itself that we find it hard to go more than an hour without being “connected”. But that’s not the moral of this story. This story is about the next fourteen hours of my life, eight of which were spent in a car driving, and the other six were nothing short of amazing. The text was from a wonderful friend asking if I had found a ticket for the Masters. The answer was “no” which was followed by another text asking if I could get in the car that morning and drive to Augusta. It took me about 2 seconds to respond and a couple hours later, Rocky Brooks (who is fortunate enough to receive a complimentary ticket from the PGA of America!) and I had both rearranged our schedules for the day and headed south. We arrived on the hallowed grounds of Augusta just as Sedgefield’s very own Scott Harvey was hitting his drive from the 9th tee in The Masters. I will never forget the look on Scott’s face after he assessed his second shot from a drive blistered straight down the center of the fairway. Scott glanced toward the ropes and spotted Rocky first (no surprise there!). He waved and then did a double take, realizing I was there as well. A huge smile came across his face and it was obvious Scott was much happier to see me than Rocky – at least that’s the way I remember it. Scott and Rocky may have different recollections! The next nine holes were truly special as we walked with Scott’s gallery. That’s correct….Scott’s gallery, many of whom were members of Sedgefield, traveled together in a pack around the course, cheering and applauding with pride for our friend. I wondered if anyone was back at the Club and the next morning when I looked at the golf rounds report for April 9th, which was a beautiful, sunshiny day, the apparent answer was not many! Certainly Scott has reflected on his Masters experience from many different perspectives, but I bet he never considered the lost revenue at Sedgefield during that week with so many of our members in Augusta supporting him! The saving grace for our club and our company was the marketing of our brand as everywhere you looked, there was a shirt or hat bearing the logos of Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf. So it seems you’re off the hook for that lost revenue, Scott! Now that the dust has settled and Scott has had time to decompress, we are working with him to arrange a celebration at the club with a “Q&A” so watch for more information as these details are finalized. What an amazing experience for Scott, his beautiful wife Kim, their adorable son Cameron, and their extended family at Sedgefield. It is always rewarding to see the camaraderie among our members when they are at their club. Seeing those friends travel to Augusta and line every fairway together in support of their friend and his family gave me an entirely new perspective on the value of membership. You simply cannot put a price tag on the bonds of friendship. Cheers to all the fond memories at your club and many, many more to come. CLUBHOUSE NEWS A MESSAGE FROM YOUR SALES AND CATERING DIRECTOR TRAVIS HUDDLESTON Spring Showers bring May Flowers...or at least that’s the idea anyways! All these showers sure have made for poor golfing conditions. Hopefully that will soon turn around and we’ll begin to see those beautiful “Spring Flowers” start to pop out there on the course. While those rainy days have made for a few damp holes out on the golf course, it sure hasn't slowed things down in the clubhouse. For those of you who were unable to attend our second culinary cook off held on March 21st, you don’t know what you’re missing. You can’t truly understand the talent we have here at Sedgefield until you’ve attended this event. Staff from all different departments teamed up to create a “Signature” dish they thought would surely knock your socks off! We had five (5) teams who took this competition to the next level. We had items on the menu ranging from Red Oak beer battered Catfish with purple Peruvian chips, roasted quail with Manchego cheese, smoked polenta and Carolina bison sliders topped with cabernet onions and Wisconsin cheese, just to name a few. Ultimately only one (1) team could wind up victorious, but it was a true battle right down to the end. Team Two (2) consisting of Yacouba Doumbia ~ Ross Line Cook, Randy Honaker ~ Dye Kitchen Staff, Ben Nihart ~ Fitness Instructor, and Jen Steszewski ~ Ross Server took home the win. They won with their signature dish of grilled marinated Hanger Steak paired with Diver Scallops, creamy risotto and crispy asparagus bites finished with veal demi and burre vert sauce. If you didn’t get to taste this dish at the cook off don’t worry, you’ll soon be seeing this item featured on our next dinner menu. Congrats Team 2!! Look for some of your other favorites from this event featured throughout the coming months as specials in both the Embassy Grille and at Greenside Café. You can see the talent of your SCC staff each and every day by simply dining in the Embassy Grille or attending one of our many club events. As the summer heats up so does our event calendar with some great family friendly events!! Be sure to mark your calendars for our kick off to summer ~ Memorial Day Party at the Greenside Café and pool as well as our bimonthly Seafood Extravaganza; both events should get you in the mood to celebrate the summer! Just to spice things up, we’re adding a corn hole tournament at the Greenside Café. Look for an announcement in your weekly email or simply call the club to sign up for any of these exciting events. Need to cool off from the heat of the summer? Tired of those same old company meetings and family gatherings? Spice things up “Sedgefield Style” with a refreshing retreat at Sedgefield’s Greenside Café and pool patio. Let us fire up the grill to offer you a selection of your summer time favorites. While we man the grill, cool off with a seasonal craft brew from one of our six (6) rotating taps, and enjoy stunning views of our signature Donald Ross course while enjoying the crisp summer nights. The summer time is meant to be spent outdoors, so let us get you out of the house, off the computer and away from your desk. We’ll take the stress of planning your next event off your shoulders so you can finally enjoy your summer. Give us a call, it’s never to late to book your next event at Sedgefield. Ashley and I look forward to seeing you at one of our two beautiful properties in the coming weeks. If there is anything we can do to make your next event at Sedgefield more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Till next time, 4 WELCOME THE WEEKEND!! Co t u n ape r g t a 9 TURF TALK 10 A NOTE FROM KEITH WOOD—GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT AT SEDGEFIELD ROSS COURSE I sure am glad we are finally done with the cold of winter and lingering cool dampness associated with the start of this spring. It’s really hard to stay positive when dealing with such bad weather, especially when all of your efforts have been aimed at making spring a great time to play golf. Nevertheless, the course is here and available although it may not be the prettiest. The record cold temperatures in February really did a number on the turf on all areas of the golf course. In the past we have seen the winter damage mainly isolated to the north facing slopes and shaded spots on fairways and greens surrounds. This year, not only did the north facing slopes and shaded areas get hit hard, but also any area that was under the slightest amount of stress from being too wet or too dry. There was a fine line between survival and death this winter for bermudagrass. While we covered the greens exactly to protocol and did everything we were supposed to do, we still sustained a little damage on a few greens. Now that those areas are really starting to fill in, I’m amazed at how much shade affects the health of our champion bermudagrass greens. I knew that if shade was going to be an issue, we had better be on our toes and eliminate all other stresses. But when soil temperatures get down to 21 degrees for an extended period, there’s not much we can do. With that being said, I have officially declared May to be the month of sod. We will be prepping, laying and watering all month to fix the damage. During this time, we will have to limit cart traffic and mark all sod as ground under repair until it is mown and ready to be played on. This will not only be in the fairways, but also on the tees, green surrounds and rough as well. As for the greens, the sod seams that we will have to work and play through will disappear after our annual aerification week starting on June 22 nd. I hope you all can appreciate the effort that our staff gives throughout the year. Success is addictive and we have been fortunate enough to get hooked. Rest assured, we want to get this course back into peak condition as soon as possible and will need your understanding as we start a long 3 weeks of repairing the damage. In closing I want you all to know how much I have appreciated the support and friendship over the years. I’ve learned to love this course and everyone associated with it. Life isn’t without challenges and there have been many mornings and evenings where the sunrise and sunset over Sedgefield have energized me to face those challenges. I have faith in the staff and McConnell Golf to continue to push the limits of what can be done to provide you all with a fantastic course to play every day! Keith Wood - Ross Course Superintendent A NOTE FROM DANIEL KNIGHT — GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT AT SEDGEFIELD DYE COURSE I think we have finally turned the corner to some warmer temperatures. Overall we are still experiencing a cooler than normal spring, especially with the overnight temps. Pair that with a lot of cloudy days and it makes it difficult for the Bermuda grass to break dormancy. The reason is that this combination of variables keeps the soil temperatures low and therefore the Bermuda doesn’t think it is time to wake up yet. No one is more frustrated than me about this situation, but I also feel that we are on the verge of greener grass. We will also begin taking some extra steps to try to push the grass along, such as venting areas and applying extra nutrients to the soil. On a more positive note, the greens healed in very nicely from our spring aerification and I think we are setting ourselves up to have them ready for the summer stress. We are seeing good top growth and the roots are also starting to extend down deeper into the soil. We are starting our foliar spoon feeding process and fungicide program to defend against stress and disease. We have also changed a few things in the landscape behind the clubhouse and leading up to the driving range. Even though the changes may seem small, we feel like it will give these areas a much more pleasing appearance. I am very pleased with the way it turned out, and once the summer color is in place, it should make it pop. On a final note, I am torn about Keith leaving Sedgefield. I am sad that he will no longer be right across town to talk to or visit. But I am also very excited for opportunity to which he is going. At Quail Hollow, not only will he be able to continue to host a tour event, but he will also have the chance to host a PGA Championship in 2017! I know we will all miss him and Quail Hollow could not have picked a better man. Good Luck Keith, I know you will do great things there. While all of these cliché’s are great introductions to all of the wonderful things happening at our club, I want to break away from the norm and tell a story—I am so excited about the future of Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf I can barely restrain myself—here’s why… On Tuesday, April 21, 2015, Tim Finchem, Commissioner of the PGA Tour, stood in our ballroom in front of blistering spotlights, cameras and local dignitaries to announce that Wyndham Worldwide has agreed to extend their sponsorship of the Wyndham Championship for ten years, through 2026! While to many this may seem like a great thing but not very monumental, let me dig a little deeper into it, and especially what it means for the members of Sedgefield Country Club. When looking at the commitment, let me borrow some words and paraphrase what pretty much everyone that took to the lectern said at the press conference—this is not a contract, this is a partnership. To me, contracts are legal documents that bind one entity to another—partnerships are much more, promoting growth and collaboration from within each party for the greater good of the overall project. The good news for us at Sedgefield? The project’s main stage is our club! The Wyndham Championship has grown to be a spectacular event not only for the Piedmont Triad, but for the world of golf. We would be foolish to not tag along for the ride and utilize their success! After the press conference, McConnell Golf President and CEO John McConnell was quoted as saying that the announcement was a boost for Sedgefield. “It just makes it easier to get better because you know what the future is,” McConnell said. “It allows you to continue to make investments because you know that the tournament is going to be here.” There you have it folks—straight from the horse’s mouth, err, the owner’s mouth—an even further commitment to investments at the club. I equate the evolution of Sedgefield over the past four years to that of the technology of cellular phones over the past couple of decades, so much so that even the word “cellular” is taboo—sorry about that, I will stick with simply “cell” from now on. First we had the bag cell phones, then flip phones, then smart phones, now smart watches and the cycle continues to get better and better—the technology gets better, speeds get faster, and phones and networks get more efficient at the same time. The same thing is happening at Sedgefield. Redecorated clubhouse, new Family Activities and Fitness Center, new putting greens, addition of 18 holes with the merger with the Dye Course. The expansion of the McConnell Golf footprint into the eastern and western parts of NC. I could keep going, but I think you get the picture. The best part of all of this? No assessments to you! Our no assessment model protects you from having to pay for the continued value that is added to your membership on a daily basis. A huge part of sustaining this model is the addition of new members, and this is where you come in. Come on, don’t be selfish and keep all of this for yourself—share the experience! Invite your friends, families, and neighbors out to the club for a round of golf, a tennis clinic, a spin class, casual lunch or nice relaxing dinner. There is so much to do at Sedgefield and I cannot wait to see you and your guests at the club collaborating with us in the great partnership that we have created! To have membership information sent to a friend on your behalf, please contact me at cflowers@mcconnellgolf.com or directly on my CELLULAR phone at (919) 601-2940—I look forward to continuing to build the Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf brand as the most prestigious in the area! MCCONNELL GOLF - REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE Purchasing The Country Club of Asheville (NC) and Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, NC in the past five months, McConnell Golf continues to enhance its reputation for excellence. Raleigh-based McConnell Golf enter it second decade of existence with a bang, as its stable of clubs has grown to feature ten of the finest private golf experiences in North and South Carolina. McConnell Golf has also expanded in its new club management division at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC. McConnell Golf’s attention to quality is a chief reason why the courses that bear its name in North and South Carolina consistently ranks among the states’ best. Given that both states have been described as having “50 Top-10 golf courses,” earning the highest marks is not an easy task. “We have been very selective in our club acquisitions and these course rankings prove that the quality of our product and member service are unmatched in the Carolinas,” said McConnell Golf Founder and CEO John McConnell. As they have done time and time again, McConnell Golf courses dominated the 2015 rankings. In North Carolina’s prestigious Top 100, McConnell Golf’s Old North State Club in New London, NC repeated as the fourth best golf course in the Tar Heel State, trailing only Pinehurst No. 2, Grandfather Mountain and CCNC’s Dogwood Course. Meanwhile, Sedgefield Country Club’s Ross Course in Greensboro, home of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, made one of the year’s most significant jumps among the Old North State’s best, up to No. 16 from No. 22 in 2014 - giving McConnell Golf the top two-ranked courses in the Triad. Close behind Sedgefield’s Ross Course, Raleigh Country Club remained at the No. 21 position in the state while Treyburn Country Club in Durham (No.30) again earned a spot in North Carolina’s Top 30. Not to be outdone, McConnell’s popular Pete Dye layout, formerly the Cardinal Golf and Country Club and now part of Sedgefield CC’s 36-hole offering, checked in at No. 58, followed by another Ross gem The Country Club of Asheville at No. 60. The Hale Irwin-designed TPC at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, home of the Web.com Tour’s Rex Hospital Open, also enjoyed a jump in state rankings, up five spots to No. 68. The North Carolina Golf Panel is comprised of golf media including some of the top daily newspapers in the state, as well as golf club professionals, noted amateurs, college golf coaches and business leaders. Each year, the Panel provides a well-researched list of the top golf courses in the state. North Carolina’s Top 100 courses are determined by a scoring system where panelists consider among these factors: routing, design, strategy, memorability, fairness, variety, and aesthetics—all detailed in the April issue of Business North Carolina magazine and at NCGolfPanel.com. Members of the Panel also voted on the top courses in the state’ six regions, plus ranged the top five courses per region in three specialty categories: Best Collection of Par 4s; Best Bang for the Buck; and Best Experience. Among the Best Par 4s in the Triad: Old North State grabbed the No. 1 spot followed at No. 3 by Sedgefield’s Ross Course. In the Triangle, Treyburn Country Club earned the top spot, with Raleigh coming in No. 2. As for the “Best Experience” - course itself, practice facilities, locker rooms, clubhouse, setting and memorability—in the Triad Sedgefield’s Ross Course was No. 1, while OId North State Club was No. 3. In the Triangle, Raleigh Country Club grabbed the No. 2 spot, with Treyburn Country Club checking in at No. 5 MAY 2015 MONTHLY CALENDAR Sunday 3 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 9:00am Cardio/Weights 6:00pm Kids Club Friday Night Buffet at the Dye Course 5:30pm Couples Golf Parent/Child 4 5 6 7 8 9 9:00am Stability Ball 9:00am Spin Men’s Tennis 9:00am Stretch 6:00pm Southern Classics 9:00am Spin 6:00pm Birthday Pastabilities 9:00am Cardio/Weights 6:00pm Kids Club Welcome the Weekend 5:30 Couples Golf Prize Fund 10 11 12 14 15 16 9:00am Stability Ball 9:00am D3 & D4 Practice 10:30am D1 & D2 Practice 9:00am Spin Men’s Tennis 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 13 Mother’s Day Brunch 9:00am Stretch 6:00pm Southern Classics 9:00am Spin 6:00pm Pastabilities 3:45pm Jr Clinics (age 5-8) 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 9:00am D3 Practice 10:00am D1 Practice 9:00am Cardio/Weights 6:00pm Kids Club Welcome to the Weekend 8:30am D2 Practice 9:30am D4 Practice 9:30am Sonny Grant Memorial 18 19 20 21 22 9:00am Stability Ball 9:00am D3 & D4 Practice 10:30am D1 & D2 Practice 9:00am Spin Men’s Tennis 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 9:00am Stretch 6:00pm Southern Classics 6:00pm Family Night 9:00am Spin 6:00pm Pastabilities 3:45pm Jr Clinics (age 5-8) 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 9:00am D3 Practice 10:00am D1 Practice 9:00am Cardio/Weights 6:00pm Kids Club Pete Dye Dinner Club 8:30am D2 Practice 9:30am D4 Practice 6:30 pm Grape Nuts 5:30pm Couples Golf 23 10:00am POOL OPENS 25 26 27 28 29 30 9:00am Stability Ball 9:00am D3 & D4 Practice 10:30am D1 & D2 Practice Memorial Day Cookout & Tourney Memorial Day Cookout & Tourney 9:00am Spin Men’s Tennis 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 9:30am D1 & D3 Matches 9:00am Stretch 6:00pm Southern Classics 5:00pm Book Club 9:00am Spin 6:00pm Pastabilities 3:45pm Jr Clinics (age 5-8) 4:30pm Jr Clinics (age 9 up) 9:00am D3 Practice 10:00am D1 Practice 9:00am Cardio/Weights 6:00pm Kids Club 8:30am D2 Practice 9:30am D4 Practice Prime Rib & Seafood Night Sharron Frahm Tennis 8:30am Member/Guest Prize Fund Sunday Brunch at the Dye Course Prize Fund 17 24 31 Prize Fund Reservations are Required for all events unless otherwise detailed.
