IF YOU LIVE NEAR or often spend time in a
wooded area in south-western Ontario bloodsucking ticks are part of your world especially
during in July and August when their populations rise. During this process, you may be
wondering whether there are better ways to
survive tick season, especially if you don’t want
to use DEET (a chemical insecticide that may
cause eye irritation, rash, or other side effects)
on yourself or veterinarian-grade pesticides on
your pets. Even if you do use chemicals in your
tick management plan, it’s still a good idea to
back them up with natural tick prevention
strategies.

The stakes can be high. First described in 1977
as “Lyme arthritis,” tick-vectored (transmitted)
Lyme disease is now the most common crittervectored disease in North America. More than
30,000 cases were reported in 2008, including
many in towns and cities where no previous
infections had been recorded. Like an invasive
weed, Lyme disease is slowly spreading inland
from its stronghold along the northern Atlantic
coast.

1. Dress Defensively. When you venture into areas

tape to cleanly capture ticks crawling in your home.
3. Clean Up Your Act. When you come indoors after
outside activities, give your clothes a 10-minute spin in a
hot clothes dryer to kill any ticks that might be hiding in
the folds or seams. Then take a hot, soapy bath or shower.
Unattached ticks will be flushed away, but you will still
need to do a tick check of your body.
5. Upgrade Your Tick Removal Equipment. If
you’re using tweezers or a pair of forceps to remove an
attached tick from yourself or your pets, you’re doing it
the hard way. Instead, try using small tick removal
“spoons” such as the Tick Twister for little deer ticks,
Ticked Off for any size ticks, or a Tick Key tick remover for
larger dog ticks. All of t hese devices cost less than $5 and
they are worth every penny. Look for them at pet stores or
from online merchants.
7. Welcome Wildlife. Your homestead is less likely
to become a Lyme disease hot spot if it includes numerous
species of mammals, birds, and reptiles for ticks to feed
on instead of white-footed mice. Newly hatched tick larvae
are disease-free, and if they feed on animals that are poor
reservoirs of Lyme disease — most squirrels, for example
— fewer nymphs will be infected.
8. Maintain Mowed Buffer Zones. Ticks sometimes do wander onto the edges of lawns, but they are
most likely to find you as you walk through tall grass, work
around low shrubbery, or hang out in shady, mulched
areas. Open lawn makes poor tick habitat, so a swath of
lawn makes a good buffer zone between your house and
the wilder habitats preferred by ticks.
4. Do Tick Checks. Ticks must feed for 36 to 48 hours
in order to transmit Lyme disease, so regularly checking
yourself for ticks after you’ve been in wooded areas is a
hugely effective preventive measure. Look for tiny and
foreign dark dots, especially in moist body creases in the
armpits, groin, hairline, scalp, waistband and the backs of
your knees. Let someone else check you, if possible,
because it’s difficult to check your own scalp and backside.

territory often, pump up the deterrent properties of your
pants. Commercially made plant-based pesticides that
deter ticks are made with lemon eucalyptus oil. It’s fragrant
stuff, so you may prefer heavily treating your pants and
socks better than slathering it on your skin.

of too much sun exposure. However, excessive UVR
exposure accounts for only 0.1% of the total global burden
of disease in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), according to the 2006 World Health Organization (WHO) report

Sunlight and Mood
During periods without
sunshine, many people
suffer from depression.
It’s called seasonal affective
disorder
(SAD).
Besides feeling gloomy,
people experiences low energy. Scientific research has
examined the frequently observed relationship between
sunlight and mood. A study from Denmark, published in
the September 2011 issue of the “Scandinavian Journal of
Work, Environment and Health,” demonstrated that
outdoor work, even in the winter, provided enough
sunlight to counteract mood difficulties. Researchers
found that regardless of the season, the turnover of serotonin in the brain was affected by the amount of sunlight
on any given day. And the levels of serotonin were higher
on bright days than on overcast or cloudy ones. In fact, the
rate of serotonin production in the brain was directly
related to the duration of bright sunlight.
Sunlight and Heart
Health
Exposure to sunlight has
a beneficial impact on
blood pressure and heart
health. A study published
in the March 2010
“European Heart Journal” showed that the beneficial
effects of sunlight on heart health and blood pressure may
be related to the chemical nitric oxide, which acts on blood
vessels to decrease blood pressure. Nitric oxide activity
may be modulated by sunlight. The immediate effects on
the heart and blood pressure appear to be short-term,
lasting less than 24 hours without additional sunlight
exposure.
New research conducted by the Universities of Southampton and Edinburgh in the UK, and published in the

new
evidence has come to light
that at least some of sunlight’s apparent ability to protect against MS does not come
from vitamin D.
A study published in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences in March 2010 used an animal model
of MS known as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). In this study, laboratory animals with MS were
exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, which led to dramatic
reductions in the activity of the disease.
However, the UV light only brought about a small and
transient rise in vitamin D levels in the animals. The magnitude and duration of this rise would be insufficient to
account for the considerable benefit conferred by UV light.
The authors of this study concluded, “These results
suggest that UVR [ultraviolet radiation] is likely suppressing disease independent of vitamin D production, and that
vitamin D supplementation alone may not replace the
ability of sunlight to reduce MS susceptibility.”

Sunlight lowers cholesterol. The sun converts
high cholesterol in the
blood
into
steroid
hormones and the sex
hormones we need for reproduction. In the absence of
sunlight, the opposite happens; substances convert to
cholesterol.

What Are Raw Food Natural Health Products?
RAW FOODS NHPS are characterised by containing
ingredients that have not been subjected to heat – above
48 degrees centigrade (115 to 120° Fahrenheit) during
manufacture. Subjecting nutrients to cooking or heat
destroys their enzymes which are essential for their

Vanilla Almond Crunch Quest Bar
sugar-free marshmallows
small pieces of dark chocolate
(Lilly’s organic low carb is great)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cut bar in half. Microwave
the bar for 10 seconds on Pam
sprayed wax paper. Gently roll to
graham cracker thickness and shape.
Carefully transfer to a silpat cookie sheet
and bake for 2 minutes per side or until just light brown.
You want it crisp but not too hard. Remove and lay a
piece of chocolate on each side. Allow it to melt and
spread it to corners. Flame-roast your two marshmallows and lay inside. Sandwich the two sides. Enjoy!

What to Look for When Choosing Sun Protection
FINALLY THE WARMER WEATHER IS HERE! And with
that comes a question asked by many folks… What is the
best sun protection for my family and me? So many of the
sunscreens that are purchased at the grocery store contain
a long list of questionable ingredients, many of which are
potent hormone disruptors, that it really makes you
wonder if what you are putting on your skin is safe.
Sunblock and sunscreen are two different things, but
many companies will combine the two. Sunblock contains
ingredients that physically block the sun from your skin
and is often quite thick. The American Melanoma
Foundation states that a sunscreen contains chemicals
that absorb some of the UV radiation and reduce the
amount that reaches the skin.
When choosing sun protection,
it is important to look for and
avoid the following potentially
hazardous ingredients:
Oxybenzone:
Used to enhance absorption of other
chemicals in sunscreen formulations, this is
associated with photoallergic reactions,
possible hormone disruptor, and accumulates
readily in the body.
Retinyl Palmitate:
This a synthetic form of vitamin A that may
speed the development of skin tumors in the
presence of sunlight.
Propylparaben and other Parabens:
These chemicals mimic estrogen and act as
hormone and reproductive disruptors, and
are also associated with allergies and immune
toxicity. Avoid in all cosmetics when possible!
Homosalate:
When it comes in contact with the sun, it
breaks down into potentially harmful
byproducts that may be associated with
hormone disruption.
So what is safe when purchasing sun protection? Zinc
oxide, which is a sunblock, is the main and active ingredient
in many of the natural skin care products and has a much
safer toxicity profile when compared to the above
ingredients. It is a powdered mineral that lies on the skin

and absorbs and disperses UVA and UVB rays, and is quite
stable in sunlight. Zinc oxide is also less likely to penetrate
the skin’s surface, meaning less of the product will end up
in the bloodstream. It is also an ideal choice for children
and babies because of its nontoxic nature. Titanium
dioxide is quite similar to zinc oxide, however it provides
less UVA protection in comparison.
Some products claim to be “non-nano” which means that
the zinc has not been broken down into nanoparticles that
may enter the bloodstream. The verdict is still out on
whether choosing a “non-nano” product is safer than a
nanomaterial, but we do know that either form of zinc
oxide is far safer than any of the conventional ingredients
listed above because it does not penetrate the skin’s
surface. A common complaint is that zinc oxide sunblocks
are notoriously difficult to rub into the skin, but a quick fix
to this problem is to make sure the skin is properly
moisturized before applying. However, a bonus to the
mineral based sunblock is that it begins to work
immediately, whereas the chemical based products need
about a half an hour to absorb into the skin before they
provide protection from the sun.
It is important to remember that getting some sun is
not a bad thing. Most Canadians are deficient in Vitamin D,
so getting a few minutes of unprotected sunshine per day,
depending on your skin type, can be a good thing.
But if you are heading to the beach or cottage, make
sure to bring your sunblock and a pair of sunglasses!
