CONSERVING A VALUABLE RESOURCE
Reclaiming used water (sewage) for subsequent use
„
Indirect Potable Reuse (municipal scale)
– Blending reclaimed water into a natural water source to be used for
potable water after further treatment
„
Non – Potable Reuse (community scale)
– Using reclaimed water for toilet flushing and irrigation

Non-Potable Reuse
BedZED Wastewater Reclamation Plant
„ UK’s first community scale urban reuse plant
„ High profile development (120 dwellings), located in South London
„ Reclaimed water used for toilet flushing
„ 25 m3/d Membrane BioReactor (MBR) plant
„ MBR installed by TW to replace existing failing system
18
Olympic Park –
Old Ford Water Recycling Treatment Plant
„
Aim:
– To reclaim treated wastewater effluent for non-potable, secondary use
– distributed to the Olympic Park via a separate dedicated non-potable network
– toilet flushing, irrigation, energy centre cooling and water features
„
Why?
– Water scarcity
– Sustainability – helping the ODA meet and exceed their 40% water efficiency target
(570,000 litres/day of potable water saved)
„
Activities involved:
– Design, construction & commissioning, operation
– Liaison with stakeholders (OFWAT, EA, DWI, HPA, ODA)
– Advice to end users
– Metering, Water Balance, Billing
