Demystifying notions of ‘Science’
as an academic discipline
Lewitt Somarajan
Everyone is a scientist. May it be a sweeper, farmer,
writer, poet, artist or say engineer or doctor. A
scientist is one - who thinks rationally, asks
questions, challenges the conventions and tries to
be a solution maker. In that sense, everyone has the Science Is An Attitude
capability to contribute in a society and equally plays an important role. Sad part is making
the education ‘elite’; exclusive & full of technical jargons automatically creates the divide –
wherein some fortunate is able to rote learn & score while others fail to comprehend and
make sense, thus tagged as failures. Life-Lab by promoting hands-on learning in classrooms
wants to break this norm by democratize learning and develop a scientific attitude in the
minds of children. So that children fearlessly pursues dreams of his/her own choice by unconditioning what the system and the society continuously infiltrate into little heads. vor at
Life-Lab is to support the teachers so that every child enjoys learning. Let’s say to teach
Friction; A teacher pours a bucket of water in classroom & asks children to slip on the wet
floor. Make the process fun yet inquisitive by asking probing questions to children like What
is the difference observed? Why sliding on a wet floor is easier than on a normal dry floor?
And scaffold the rigor of questions slowly to make children understand the reason behind
different cut-designs on the soles of their slippers or on the wheels of automobiles.
Albert Einstein said, “Everyone is a genius. But if we judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it
will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”. It’s time to bring out the genius in each &
every child !
What is Vedic Mathematics?
Vinay Nair
Vedic Mathematics is a subject that deals with quicker calculations
using simpler methods. The subject was a gift to the mankind by one
of the Shankaracharyas, Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha (1884 – 1960
CE), who was the Acharya of Govardhan Math, Puri. It is said that
during his Vedic studies in Sringeri, he happened to come across
some Sanskrit Sutras where he found some mathematical meaning
to it. He kept contemplating over it for 7 to 8 years and reconstructed
them into 16 Sutras and 13 Upasutras. Using these Sutras, one can do calculations
many times faster than the conventional methods. Initially Swamiji had written sixteen
volumes on his new discovery in mathematics and named it – Vedic Mathematics. But
before the book could be printed, it was irretrievably lost. In one and a half month’s
time, he re-wrote one introductory volume and planned to continue writing the lost
volumes. However, the toll that had taken on his failing health, on account of his
rigorous work for almost four decades, did not allow him write more. And in February
1960, the Mahatma left his mortal frame. The introductory volume itself covers
Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Squares, Square Roots, Cubes, Cube Roots,
Factorisation, Simple & Quadratic Equations, Polynomial Multiplication and Division,
Compound Multiplication, Divisibility and much more.
When one hears the word ‘Sutras’ in a language like Sanskrit, one need not think that
he should have knowledge in Sanskrit to understand the subject. It is so lucid that
children of any caliber can learn it with ease. Unlike the Mathematics that is taught in
school which has only ‘one way’ to do a particular calculation, Vedic Mathematics
teaches different ways to solve the same problem.
Using Vedic Mathematics, even a ten year old can calculate 999 x 991 in less than five
seconds, and that too in a method of his own choice. This may look like an
exaggeration but it is the Truth. More than ‘techniques’ this subject facilitates
‘thinking’, which unfortunately is not much seen in the present educational system.
Many students are afraid of Mathematics and they have no option but to learn it. Using
Vedic Mathematics we can enjoy the subject and experiment & even a school child
can discover different methods of his own.
Vinay Nair conducts workshops, seminars, camps and online classes for
students as well as teachers. He has developed a Postal/Online Course on
Vedic Mathematics which is offered as a Home Study Course by
Chinmaya International Foundation. He can be contacted at vinay@
sovm.org. A three-day workshop on Vedic Mathematics is been arranged
at Kollam from 27th – 29th December 2013 by Chinmaya Mission Kollam.

How to tackle civil service
One characteristic of most Civil service aspirants is that their
ambition stops at ‘joining the service’. The security of career element is,
highest on the list of attractions. There is no further ambition to grow and
possibly become the most competent public servant of the country. To
become an IAS Officer is one thing, to be the best is altogether another thing. If
one aims to be the best, then the approach to IAS exam must be more than
preparing for an examination. In fact, the preparation has to be oriented to a
life time of intellectual effort than a one off dash at a public examination.
One has to understand that questions of public policy are very complex.
There are no ‘silver bullet’ solutions for many of them. Most of them are
horribly mixed up in our multitier society and fragmented polity. Solutions
which homogenous democratic polities can easily bring about overnight may
not be easily adoptable in India.
Just look at how China acquires land for a new industrial
complex. Since there is only limited private ownership of land, the planner
just sends notices to those who have to vacate their homes. A special paint is
applied at the door of houses which need to be vacated in a month and the
bull dozers come in on the due date. There are ‘no rights’ on land as such. In
contrast as a young Civil Servant in India you will find it extremely difficult to
remove illegal squatters encroaching even a vital installation like a dam site. It
is fragmented grass roots democracy at play. Negotiation skills must work,
upon failing only, legal coercion may be thought of. Patient communication
is therefore, a skill of utmost importance for a young aspirant and civil
servant.
The best way to develop patient communication is to teach
younger children. If you have younger siblings or cousins try and help them
with a subject you are rather good at. Taking the learner through his subject
and making him or her understand is the best way. Patience is a function of
confidence of the mind. However provoked and disrupted you are in the task,
patience assures that you are on your way. It indicates that you are sure about
the outcome. Distractions do not take your mind away. Any amount of noise
does not sink the music in your heart.
Interviewers might provoke you on various vexatious issues
plaguing our democracy. Once upon a time, it was customary for the board
to ask the views of the candidate on Presidential form of Government,
Military rule etc. There are many candidates who argue for the above and
indeed very convincingly. But in our heart of hearts we know that our present
system has not been fully explored. Plus, the country has, through
cumbersome and erratic electoral procedure managed to inch forward in
many spheres. It takes a detailed observation to understand what has worked
and what has not, and why. The ‘why’ question is all the more important
when we address failure. Generally again, when policies have to tackle
differential endowment or tackle the inherent problems of this fragmented
society of ours, we have found it difficult.
Inequality is a core issue the IAS aspirant will have to tackle.
Various measures governments take, to tackle inequality in turn may create
more complexity. Job reservations are a typical case in point. Differential
treatment produces short term visible results at the cost of long term
sustainable growth. Short term vice long term gain is a crucial trade off
aspirant has to understand. This comes into play in various vexing questions
in development practice like development vice environment, Pollution vice
growth etc.
Understanding nuances and not being afraid of complexity comes from
logical reasoning skills which aspirants need to have. Logic means both
verbal and mathematical expression. Logical arguments are instantly
convincing. Convincing the board comes not from flowery language but
strong reasoning expressed with a minimum of verbal jugglery.
specialized programme under the Department of Industrial Design. The focus is on
learning by doing, with a strong hands-on approach. Students gain a thorough
understanding of form, structure, context and material by building workable prototypes
in the workshops and labs. A combination of courses, projects and field visits ensures
exposure to both the craft sector and mass manufacture. The subjects of waste material,
ergonomics, modularity, anthropometry, traditional techniques, lifestyle,
manufacturing, and customization are concerns of the furniture designer. Furniture is a
large component of interiors, and a good knowledge of furniture helps design interior
elements. Furniture design graduates work with small and large manufacturers, trade,
craft, retail, display and exhibition.
Film and Video Communication: Film as a medium, is closest to reality, and mirrors
every aspect of the human experience. Film-making is telling a story through moving
images. India is rich in living traditions and stories, and provides a vast live laboratory
for film-makers.The NID trains film students in the classical film-making tradition and
in short films. Film-making is at once at the centre of design, and at the periphery of it.
Being in NID, the students grow to become design-informed film-makers. Film-making
is multi-disciplinary in nature, involving costume, space, light, camera, graphic design,
and furniture. Design as an activity comes together in cinema. The film course
introduces communication and social theory, and the language and technology of film
and video. Through projects students are exposed to all roles and responsibilities of the
film-maker.Films today in India are smarter, stories are better, and technique is on par
with the best in the world. India's rich regional cinema lends diversity, and at the same
time reinforces the Indian identity through film. NID graduates go on to create ad film,
documentaries, feature films, and television content.
Ceramic and Glass Design:The creation of ceramic and glass objects of utilitarian and
aesthetic value is one of the oldest activities of human beings. Ceramic and Glass
Design takes inspiration from art and craft traditions, as well as modern techniques of
mass production. The Ceramic and Glass Design discipline involves both traditional
ways of working, as well as a thorough understanding of the industrial sector. In India,
the Ceramic and Glass Industry ranges from the large, medium and small scale sectors
to village industries. Students of Ceramic and Glass Design work in the sectors of
tableware, tiles, sanitary ware, NGOs and the craft sector. There are numerous
applications in architecture for building facades, partitions, garden curtains and
sculptures. The programme aims to enable the students to work as designers for the
industry, the government sector, and other agencies or start their own independent
practice.
Textile Design: Textiles are one of human beings oldest creations, and today have a
huge range of function and application. Textile design is the understanding and

creation of viewing experiences. It is similar to controlled storytelling,
and the exhibition designer has to understand a totality of experience.
The Exhibition Design programme integrates several disciplines such

are inputs on conceptualization and communication of design concepts,
communication theories, visual language, spatial perception and design. The
programme involves the development of skills through the study of materials,

skills in classification, creating a structure, and presentation in an enjoyable manner.
