INTRODUCTION
Picture this. It’s Human Right’s Day
2013, and all throughout Cape Town,
and maybe even the world, people
have set out to do something they’ve
never done before.
Some are climbing mountains they’ve never climbed,
others are learning to knit for the first time, and some
might even be filming that movie they’ve always
dreamed of making. Whether it be as big as sky diving,
or as small as writing a debut poem, people have set out
to do something which will leave them lying in bed that
night thinking, “That was different”.
But it doesn’t end there. These actions are being performed
to benefit others. These people have got their friends and
family to sponsor their challenge, and all the money
raised has gone towards uplifting the vulnerable through
Common Good’s employment and education initiatives.
We’re asking that you choose just one thing that you think is
different, quirky or out of the ordinary… something that stretches
you a bit or that you’ve never done before. Then ask your
co-workers, family and friends to sponsor you completing that
challenge on 21 March 2013.
We can’t promise you a Nobel Peace Prize for your efforts, but
the money you raise will go towards helping people in need and

WHY GET INVOLVED?
There’s no doubt about it, South Africa is a beautiful country. We’re surrounded
by breath-taking landscapes and wonderful people. But that doesn’t mean we
don’t have our problems.
Education and employment are just two of the areas we struggle with, and things aren’t suddenly about to get better
by themselves. If you don’t believe us, check out these stats:
EDUCATION
In South Africa, the average adult only has 6.5
years of education
13% of people over the age of 15 are illiterate
EMPLOYMENT
The unemployment rate in South Africa is 25%
51% of South Africans between the ages of 15 and
24 are unemployed.
There are over 500 000 primary school-aged
children not enrolled in school

HELP
TWD is all about helping people so that we start making a dent in these numbers, and a difference in
thousands of lives. The funds you raise through your TWD challenge will go to Common Good which is
an organization that is passionate about changing the situation of education and employment in South
Africa. By doing something different, you’re helping to address these issues and make a valuable
change in your community.
REMEMBER, THERE ARE 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN SOUTH
AFRICA. THAT’S 50 MILLION WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
IDEAS TO GET STARTED
We’re joining with other Capetonians to do something completely out of the ordinary
on one day. It can be anything. Absolutely anything. (Anything legal, of course.)
Whatever you decide to do should leave you thinking, “That was different!” Not sure where to start? Here are a few
ideas to get you thinking…
SPORTY
Hike table mountain in high heels
(Men, it’s not ‘cross’ dressing if
you do it with a smile on your
face)
Cycle around the peninsula in a
panda suit
Run a marathon through a
township whilst playing the
harmonica
Host a dance marathon at an old
age home
Conduct an aerobic-a-thon – in
formalwear
ARTSY & CRAFTY
Speed knit an unprecedented
amount of blankets in one day
Build a fully functioning robot
that can make you breakfast in
the mornings
Paint a mural using only your
mouth
Create a shrubbery in the shape
of Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Make a likeness of yourself out
of papier-mâché and try sell it to
a tourist
FAMILY
Form a family band (If you can’t
play instruments, form a family a
capella group)
Try round up all your
neighbourhood’s dogs and take
them for a walk
Film your own family movie,
e.g. Home Alone 5 or Now Look
Who’s Talking Too Again
Make copious amounts of
sherbet and try see how
much you can eat
That should hopefully get you thinking in the right direction. And if you want
to go bigger, why not organize an event or make it into a group activity?
The sky is the limit. Unless of course you’re planning a trip to the moon.
Whether you join the Boswell Wilkie Circus, go caber tossing or
organise a yodelling competition, we want you to look back on the
21 March 2013 with great affection, pride, and maybe a healthy
dose of embarrassment.
HOW TO SET UP YOUR
PROFILE ON GIVENGAIN
The easiest way to collect sponsorship is through GivenGain. All you’ll need to get
started is a computer and the Internet. If you have neither, there’s a good chance
you’re Amish, but that’s okay, hopefully there’s Wi-Fi access in a barn near you.
Follow these steps and soon you’ll be all set to invite people to sponsor your twd challenge:

TIPS TO RALLY SUPPORT
A decade ago your main way of rallying support would have been going
door to door and ringing doorbells, which is not always easy when there are
big dogs and sprinklers around.
Fortunately, today it’s far easier than ever before to get people to sponsor you.
