Once more we were really excited to hear back from you and a warm welcome to our new members! Congratulations on joining us to fast track your farming outcomes! “Weed of a month” this issue is the Scotch Thistle, a common invasive plant world wide and in fact Scotland’s National emblem. But why? Legend relates how a sleeping party of Scots warriors were almost set upon by an invading band of Vikings and were only saved when one of the attackers trod on a wild thistle with his bare feet. His cries raised the alarm and the Scots duly defeated the Danes. In gratitude, the plant became known as the Guardian Thistle and was adopted as the symbol of Scotland. Product of the Month: “How to Make Organic Compost” 2 Walk the Talk 2 Trekking about with Helen & Hugo 3 Members Section 4 Farming Secrets Guarantees Profitable Viable Farming With Less Effort And Expenditure…… Even If You Think You Know Everything There Is To Know About Farming Good compost, properly made, does two important things: (1) Adds foods and nutrients for beneficial organism growth;(2) Adds a high diversity of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes, possibly micro-arthropods and earthworms as well. To determine compost quality, the types and variety of organisms present in the compost are key. This simple fact has not been recognized by the “chemical world” and this DVD seeks to remedy that situation.. Can organic matter be thrown in a big pile and will it turn into a pile of good compost? If you wait for several years, it might happen. But if anaerobic conditions develop during the composting process that result in loss of nutrients, loss of the beneficial biology and production of plant toxic materials, then a stinking mess may be the result, with no benefit, and in fact some detriment, to plants. Uncontrolled composting may result in the production of good compost, if conditions result in wetting and drying conditions that ultimately allow a decent biology to grow. But this approach requires a great deal more time than if conditions were controlled so that beneficial organisms were most favored. During the process from “a pile of rotting organic material” to conversion into a material worth it’s weight in gold, the minimum set of factors that have to be paid attention to are: • Starting materials • Microorganisms • Temperature • Moisture content • Aeration (smell) Control of these factors is necessary and typically carried out by: • Careful addition of a mix of plant materials with a diversity of organisms on their surfaces, nutrients in the plant material, with care that not too much high N-containing material is added to cause too rapid microbial growth, • A diversity of plant materials so many types of microorganisms will grow and hold nutrients in their bodies, and thus, in the compost. • Physical turning or allowing worms to turn the material, in order to cool the pile, add air and mix the different organisms throughout the pile, • Use of covers to prevent too much water, or to prevent drying, Addition of water if needed We’ve only begun to understand the biology in compost and soil, sediments and water, on leaf surfaces and roots. After watching this DVD, you should be able to: Build and make good compost, Modify the compost to select for bacterial or fungal dominance. Know methods to assess organisms present Create great soil for your growing needs! World wide there are more and more people trying and testing compost teas and compost extracts as the full potential of this natural process is realised. Leading in this field worldwide and on this CD is Dr. Elaine Ingham from Soil Foodweb Institute along with Gerhard Grasser of Agrisolutions who is a trained SFI adviser and user of compost and compost teas. Also participating in this discussion is Darren Morgan from Enviroturf Australia who is an expert in compost tea brewing. This interview is the 2nd in a series about one of the most effective and quickest methods of creating and maintaining an active, lively soil foodweb. Compost teas are becoming extremely popular as more and more farmers realise their effectiveness. Natural organic compost teas and compost extracts help to re establish the biology into your soils and as well on to your plant leaf surfaces. However the danger, as in all “new” methods is to overlook some basic but very important essentials for making what we call GOOD COMPOST TEA. The discussion points out the do’s and don’ts to avoid wasting your time and money, equipment to buy, products to use, when to spray out and results for the soil and plants.
