The tournament is considered by

Phillips, SEC Enterprises, Inc. President.
The planning stages began when a
group comprised of representatives from
Tennessee Tech, the city of Cookeville and
the Cookeville Chamber of Commerce
prepared and presented the winning bid
to the TSSAA. After the announcement,
Cookeville Chamber President George
Halford and University Advancement Vice
President Mark Hutchins asked Phillips
to chair the Cookeville TSSAA Blue Cross
Bowl Steering Committee.
Phillips is in his second year of being
involved with the TSSAA championships in
Cookeville.
“There is a tremendous amount of media
coverage and public interest in this event
throughout the state,” Phillips said. “The
positive PR and exposure for Cookeville,
TTU and the Highlands region is invaluable
in creating public interest in our community
from outside the region.”
Phillips also went on to say he believes
the university benefits by attracting
future students that might not otherwise
consider Tech.
“We think this event creates a
tremendous amount of community pride
and reinforces the fact that this is a great
place to live and work,” Phillips said.
“The first year of games in Cookeville
was really a touchdown. It was a great
community effort and a first-class event.
Visitors were made to feel welcome.
This time, we know where the surprises
are, and while last year the bar was set
high, we know how to make it even
better.”
“This year I would like to encourage
anyone who lives within reach of
Cookeville and loves great high school
football to buy their tickets early. Over
30,000 visitors over a three-day period
made their way to the games last year
and I would hate to see football fans
disappointed.”
“
immediate interest, and from that point
forward it only took a couple of weeks to
get the details locked down.”
Rudolph liked what WCTE and
the other TPTC stations “brought to
the table.”
“What was so appealing was the
ability to do all eight football games,
including the two Division II games
that had not been covered in the past,”
Rudolph said. “The Blue Cross Bowl
football championships this season
will mark the start of a new three-year
partnership between TSSAA, the TPTC
stations and PlayOn! Sports.”

Students gain on-the-job experience at WCTE.
G

underneath Tucker Stadium
on the idyllic Tennessee Tech

surprise the station offers Tech students a
rare chance to learn hands-on by becoming
a student worker.

students can learn that include master
control, production and learning the
everyday ins and outs of a TV station. On
top of all that, WCTE is small enough
and informal enough that students have
no trouble picking up competencies
throughout their time at WCTE.
“[Student workers] bring fresh ideas,
enthusiasm and a technical and social
media skill set that broadens services to the
community,” said WCTE President and
CEO Becky Magura.
Magura would know – she was the
station’s first intern.
“I started out at this station as an intern,”
said Magura. “I interned for over a year.”
Tech plays a vital role in the community,
so it’s beneficial to work with these students.
In the past, it’s been the Education and
Journalism Departments that provided

students, but because of specialization in
areas such as master control, the Engineering
and Computer Science Departments have
been providing more students who bring
special skills to the station.
Four students are currently employed at
WCTE; their majors vary anywhere from
electrical engineering to computer science,
Canaan Williams is soaking up
the opportunity to learn at WCTE.
“I see this job as a practical
use of what

I’m being taught in college,” said Rich.
“It’s been worth it because I’ve been given a
chance to learn quite a bit.”
A senior accounting major, Mysti
Griffith is the longest-tenured student
worker at the station. Having been here for
over two years, she still enjoys her job.
“I still have a lot left to learn,” she said.
“But it has solidified the idea that I want to
work in broadcasting.”
As for me, I’m Canaan Williams, a senior
journalism major and I heard about the job
through Brenda Wilson, assistant professor
of journalism. I interned at the station
during the Spring of 2010 and started
working in master control in August of the
same year.
I want to learn as much as possible and
this is the perfect place to learn because of
the patience the employees have.
They’re great teachers.

Jinyoung Ryu, a native of Seoul, South
Korea, started in August. A senior electrical
engineering major, she came to know about
the job through Charlie Wilkerson, Director
of International Student Affairs.
“I find the job challenging,” said
Ryu. “I feel like this job will help
me separate myself from others
when it comes time to graduate
and look for employment.”
Nathaniel Rich is a junior
majoring in computer
science. He heard about
WCTE while competing in a
robotics world championship
in Georgia. He agreed to
volunteer with WCTE and
was later hired to work in
master control.
Senior electrical engineering
major Jinyoung Ryu hopes her
experience at WCTE will give
her an edge in the job market.

The announcement was made at the Putnam

According to Upper Cumberland

Investing in public television
and the Upper Cumberland
O
n Friday, October 1st,
WCTE held the 4th
annual Blues and Brews.
It was advertised as
a “toe-tappin’ kneesslappin’ hand clappin’ cure for the blahs.”
It was all of that and more! Toes are still
tapping.
The event would not have enjoyed the
same success without our food and beverage
donors, and especially not without the
help of one of our key strategic partners,
Ottis Phillips. Ottis is the President of SEC
Enterprises, Inc. If the company name does
not immediately ring a bell, the names of
8 | WCTE Close-Up
the delicious products SEC distributes may
set your mouth to watering - products like
Coors, Blue Moon, Miller, Samuel Adams,
Guinness, Heineken and Corona, just to
name a few.
Ottis Phillips was born in Cookeville.
His family arrived from North Carolina in
the 1800’s. With a degree in Engineering
and a Masters in Business, Ottis began
his career with Fleetguard where he was
transferred to Texas and met his wife Cindy.
Together they “have raised five wonderful
children” - Kristie, Beth, Parker, Emily
and Hunter. Beth has given them two
grandchildren, Leigh and Caden.
“I am blessed to have such a supportive
wife in Cindy. She is my partner in
everything and without her, I wouldn’t have
had the success I’ve had.”
Ottis had an interest in the business of
beer and his first job in beer distribution
brought him back from Texas to Nashville
and Coors of the Cumberland, “the
first Coors distributorship east of the
Mississippi.” When the company went
bankrupt, Ottis and Cindy went back to
Texas where Ottis was hired as an area sales
manager for Coors. When the opportunity
came to move back to Cookeville in 1990
to work for SEC as the GM, he grabbed
it. In 1995, Harold Evans offered to sell
him the business and Ottis jumped at that
opportunity too.
“Although I watch very little TV
(football games are the exception), I have
long been a fan and supporter of PBS,” said
Ottis. “After moving back to Cookeville. we
were more than happy to help WCTE as
opportunities came about. Blues and Brews
has been a great cooperative effort that
benefits the station financially and provides
exposure for our products. We also sponsor
a board at the Great TV Auction. Investing
in WCTE is an investment in the Upper
Cumberland Region. Absolutely.”
“I personally love the feature
programs that WCTE carries. I like
anything Ken Burns produces. I also
like the Antiques Road Show and I try
to catch some of the Smithville Fiddlers’
Jamboree. My grandkids watch morning
childrens’programs like Super Why and
Dinosaur Train.
“WCTE provides a tremendous
public service to our community that
too many of us take for granted. WCTE
is no different than my business in that
they also have to pay utilities, payroll,
equipment maintenance, repairs, rent, etc.
Unfortunately they don’t have a paying
customer base and steady revenue stream to
pay the bills. Without voluntary public
support and contributions, there would be
no WCTE. “

njoy the spirit of giving this holiday season while supporting WCTE,
Upper Cumberland Public Television. The City of Crossville, one of our
trusted community partners, is generously sponsoring WCTE as a
beneficiary in Gaylord Opryland’s 3rd Annual Hall of Trees.
This exciting event displays beautifully decorated Christmas trees that are
tied to various charities and non-profit organizations. Hall of Trees is part of
Gaylord Opryland’s famous A Country Christmas, which attracts more than 1
million visitors every holiday season.
Here’s how it works. The WCTE Christmas tree will include several wonderful
gifts related to Upper Cumberland Public Television, including DVD’s of
local WCTE productions, national PBS programs, great music, books, etc. A
progressive auction will run from November 19, 2010 through December 20,
2010. Bids may be placed in person at the Gaylord Opryland Resort’s Ryman
B1-B3 Exhibit Halls, or online at www.HallofTrees.com. The winning bidder for
the tree will be awarded the ornaments and all gifts associated with the tree. The
high bid for the tree will go immediately to WCTE. For details regarding shipping
and payment, contact Gaylord Opryland through the Hall of Trees website.
Hall of Trees is one way to get into the spirit of giving this holiday season
and get some great gifts in return. Maybe the best gift is knowing that
supporting WCTE is a direct investment in the Upper Cumberland community,
all year long.

Circus
W
elcome to Walden, New York, where the 150
performers and crew members of the legendary Big
Apple Circus gather from around the world to put
together the new show for their annual 350-performance tour.
As sets are built, costumes designed and fitted, acts rehearsed
and refined, meet the members of the Big Apple family: the
veteran clown who plays the circus’ most enduring and beloved
character, and the slightly neurotic novice whose clowning
covers a painful past; the newly assembled trapeze troupe
that can’t seem to catch a trick; the zany, tightly wound guest
director who lives for the circus; and the kids of the rough-andtumble ring crew, all of whom seem to be looking for a fresh
start. But as a bomb threat proves, running away to the circus
doesn’t always guarantee your troubles won’t find you.
Good news for the Upper Cumberland.

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous
and influential artists of the 20th century and how he
found redemption not in the public adoration he craved
as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of
fatherhood. It is also a New York immigrant’s tale. Lennon
came to New York City in 1971 seeking what every
other immigrant has sought: freedom — the freedom to
be himself and not “Beatle John,” the freedom to live a
normal life.

LENNONYC PODCAST
Check out the free new podcast series created for LENNONYC.
New “episodes” will post weekly every Thursday until the
Thursday after broadcast on November 22. The content will
be available on the AMERICAN MASTERS website (pbs.org/
americanmasters) and iTunes. The first podcast features Jack
Douglas talking about his long relationship with John Lennon
including his time producing Double Fantasy. A highlight of the
interview is Douglas’ account about a probable Beatles reunion
for a Ringo album slated to be recorded in early 1981. Slated to
appear on later episodes: Bob Gruen, Jim Keltner, Elton John and
Yoko Ono.

P
ete Souza is never far behind President Obama. In
fact, sometimes he’s ahead of him. As the president’s
chief White House photographer, Souza is the
president’s shadow. Now, National Geographic and PBS
follow Souza inside the Obama White House — aboard
Air Force One, backstage at the State of the Union and
into the heart of the West Wing. It’s a behind-the-scenes
look at the everyday grit of the American presidency and a
chance to see what it’s like to cover the most powerful man
in the world, for history.

Christmas at Concordia:
Journey To Bethlehem
Monday, December 13
N
ationally recognized composer and conductor
René Clausen of Concordia College in
Moorhead, Minnesota re-imagines Christmas,
taking viewers of all faiths and traditions on a musical
journey. The college’s annual concert combines the
pageantry of opera, the grandeur of choral orchestral
masterworks, and the intimacy of delicate solos.
Christmas at Concordia will be produced for national
broadcast by Twin Cities Public Television (tpt). Widely
known for its artistic television productions of college
Christmas celebrations for over twenty-five years, tpt
offers this seasonal special in stunning HD and 5.1
Surround Sound.
René Clausen combines sonorous and celebratory
themes to create an aural tapestry. Taped on multiple
stages and featuring both large and small ensembles, the
diverse selections include sacred seasonal favorites such
as “Oh Holy Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear,”
traditional American folk hymns like “I Wonder as I
Wander,” and original compositions by René Clausen,
including “There Is No Rose of Such Virtue.”
Christmas at Concordia is also visually striking,
featuring a magnificent art installation measuring 24’ high
by 176’ wide that transforms the 2800-seat hall. These
mural panels serve as a backdrop for the 450 musicians,
creating a fresh yet traditional setting for this stunning
performance.
René Clausen is one of America’s leading choral
orchestral composers, having written over 90
commissioned works for the Kings Singers, Mormon
Tabernacle Choir and the National American Choral
Directors Association Convention.

Christmas with the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir
featuring Natalie Cole and
David Mccullough
Wednesday, December 15
G
rammy Award winner Natalie Cole and
Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough join
the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir
in a magnificent Christmas celebration featuring some
of the season’s most beloved songs. This special airs on
December 15.
Natalie Cole joins the Choir to perform “It’s the
Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and “Hark! The
Herald Angels Sing,” and David McCullough reflects on
“American Christmas Memories.” The 60-minute program
also includes “For Unto Us a Child is Born” from the
Messiah, “Christmas Carols in the Air,” “Angels, from the
Realms of Glory” as well as performances by a combined
children’s choir and ballet dancers.
The 360-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir was
organized in 1847 shortly after the Mormon pioneers
arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. The Choir is well known
for its recordings, which include two platinum and
five gold albums, and the Grammy Award-winning
rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The Choir
has performed with some of the world’s great orchestras,
including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York
Philharmonic and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra,
and it now performs regularly with the Orchestra at
Temple Square, a 110-member all volunteer symphony,
formed in 1999.

“The Award of Distinction is what it’s called,”
said Jamie, “and it’s given to projects that exceed

“When we were starting out with Live Green

A big grin comes over his face.
“Well, mission accomplished!”

Martha was a person so full of life that she made you feel more
alive. She always gave a helping hand and made you laugh the entire
time you spent with her. When she was recuperating from her chemo
treatments, she would come over and sit in my garden - she was still
was too weak to bend over and work. When she could, she would pick
our berries, bag them up, freeze them, then go home bake a cobbler
and bring it over while it still was warm. When I would try to get her
to stop or rest, she would say “digging in the dirt and working with
the fruits of the garden was therapy.”
She and her husband had a little nursery called “Cloud Nine.” She
said she felt closer to God working the soil, raising vegetables, fruits
and socializing with people when they came to buy plants. It was not
just extra income for them; it was a labor of love. She would be just as
likely to give plants away to people who happened across her path.
When cancer raised its ugly head, she fought it with every fiber of
her being. Her faith was strong and her family and friends were by her
side for months. Toward the end Martha asked me if I would sell her
plants and donate the money to WCTE. It was a typical selfless act.
She lived to bring things to life.
We feel blessed that we had such a member of our WCTE family.
Martha was a special person who left us too soon.
I’ll never forget her kindness and I vow to pass it on whenever I can.
Thank you, Martha.
