INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HOW TO BUILD AN OPTIMUM CYCLING CITY ENVIRONMENT? CONNECTIVITY AND ROAD SAFETY 3rd & 4th June 2014 Antiq Palace Hotel Ljubljana, Slovenia CycleCities – a route to the future The project CycleCities European cities for integrating cycling within sustainable mobility management schemes is co-financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund and made possible by the INTERREG IVC programme. 1 BSC Kranj – Regional Development Agency of Gorenjska is delighted to invite you to the 1st international CycleCities Conference: HOW TO BUILD AN OPTIMUM CYCLING CITY ENVIRONMENT? CONNECTIVITY AND ROAD SAFETY In the 21st century Europe cycling is a fast growing segment of European cities’ transport systems. Cycling is of strategic importance in the sustainable development of our cities. However, despite the growth of cycling, there is still significant potential for improving the integration of cycling into the transport network – across Europe there are positive examples of good practice and others examples of cities exploring the field. CycleCities project aims to carry out the transfer of experience and exchanges of good practice among European cities, as well as to build up a knowledge base documenting the successful integration of cycling into improving traffic conditions and city environments. Eight partners from seven European countries: United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia, joined together with a common interest to create optimum cycle cities. One of the main challenges in the development of cycling in cities of today is how to ensure good connectivity and safety for bicycling. Lack of space, co-ordination and the demands of other transport modes often prevents city authorities from providing direct connections to key trip generators in their city and balancing desire lines with high level of road safety to encourage the growth in mode share particularly the inexperienced and vulnerable. The conference will present some of latest thinking from across Europe for creating good connectivity and road safety of cycling in a city and provide a forum to discuss optimum solutions from various perspectives of different stakeholders: spatial and transport planning authorities, road infrastructure design and construction business, road safety agencies, cycling advocacy organisations etc. The conference will be followed by the 5th interregional CycleCities Forum and 5th interregional CycleCities Workshop. The participants of the forum and workshop will have an opportunity to experience challenges and explore solutions for more and safer cycling in the city of Ljubljana. As one of the most ambitious “climber” cities in Europe the city has recently set ambitious plans and undertaken various measures to double the share of cycling in a modal split of the city from current 10% till 2020. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The participation on the conference, forum and workshop is free but pre-registration is necessary.
