How to reach Hasselt University How to reach Hasselt University By plane To visit Hasselt University, it is recommended to fly to Brussels national airport, also known as Zaventem (airline code BRU) On arrival in the arrival’s hall of Brussels National Airport, take the elevator (to the right, in front of you) to the -1 level where you will find the train station. There, you can ask for information on trains to Hasselt (timetable can also be found online) and buy a ticket to Hasselt. This train runs twice per hour and arrives in Hasselt after about 80 minutes. Note that there is no direct train from the airport to Hasselt. Depending on which train you take, you will have to transfer once or twice. In most cases you will need to transfer once: usually this will be in Leuven. Please also make sure that you are in the right compartment: in some cases, the train will be split in two parts at the stop in Landen: the rear part goes to Liège and the front part goes to Hasselt. Check before Landen (the third stop from Brussels North Station) whether you are in the right compartment. For more information on train timetables, see “by train”. Remark: Some low-cost airline companies fly to Brussels-South airport. This is actually located in Charleroi, which is located at 60 km from the heart of Brussels. Every hour a shuttle coach leaves the airport to take you to the main Brussels railway station (Brussels South). The shuttle coach stop there is at the crossing of rue de France and rue de l’Instruction. A single fare is 13 €, return fare is 22 €. Shuttle tickets are sold inside the airport terminal (counter n° 1). You can also buy tickets on the Internet : www.voyages-lelan.be. The trip takes 1 hour. Remark: Some low-cost airline companies also fly to Liège airport. This is about 45 km from Hasselt University. From Liège Guillemin railway station, you can take the train to Hasselt railway station. For more information on train timetables, see “by train”. The train ride from Liège Guillemins to Hasselt takes about 1 hour. By train From Brussels: the abovementioned train from Brussels airport to Hasselt rides twice per hour. More information about Belgian railway timetables can be found on the following website: http://www.b-rail.be, http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/index.php p. 1 of 4 How to reach Hasselt University From Hasselt Railway Station to Campus Diepenbeek At the bus stop (platform 6) in front of Hasselt railway station, as well as at various bus stops in Hasselt city centre, you can take a bus to the university Campus: from Hasselt Railway Station buses to Campus Diepenbeek leave every 15 minutes between 6.10 and 20.10 (Line 45 or 36, direction: Genk). The ride to Campus takes about 15 minutes. You need to get off on the 2nd stop on Campus (in front of building D). To go back to Hasselt City centre from the university, you can again take bus line 45 or 36. Attention: before you get on the bus, make sure the bus is travelling in the direction of Hasselt! By car From Brussels: On the R0 (ring around Brussels), take the exit Leuven/Liège to highway E40. Follow the direction of Leuven and take exit Leuven/Hasselt/Genk to highway E314 in the direction of Aachen/Aken. Near Lummen take the E313 in the direction of Hasselt. Take Exit 28 (Hasselt-Zuid). When leaving the E313 at Exit 28, turn left in the direction of Hasselt and drive for about 100 metres. At the second traffic light, turn right and keep following this road until the fifth traffic light, then turn right again (direction Genk). This road is the "Universiteitslaan". Two kilometres down this road you will find Hasselt University, Campus Diepenbeek on your right hand side. From Liège: Take the E313 in the direction of Antwerp. Take Exit 28 (Hasselt-Zuid). When leaving the E313 at Exit 28, turn left in the direction of Hasselt and drive for about 100 metres. At the second traffic light, turn right and keep following this road until the fifth traffic light, then turn right again (direction Genk). This road is the "Universiteitslaan". Two kilometres down this road you will find Hasselt University, Campus Diepenbeek on your right hand side. From Germany: Take the E314 in the direction of Antwerp. Take Exit 31 (Genk-Centrum). Follow the N76 approximately seven kilometres until after you crossed the Albert canal. Than turn right at the traffic lights into the direction of Hasselt (= N702).
