A little bit of History It’s not new… http://www.mobic.com/oldnews/2000/07/sa p_and_motorola_team_to_extend_.htm A little bit of History (cont’d) ‣ ‣ ‣ Nothing really happened for almost a decade Unless you consider scanning a barcode in the warehouse mobility... Reasons ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Bandwidth was too low resulting in slow response time Cell phone coverage for WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) was weak Usability was not acceptable Devices were flip-phones at best with small character-based screens (essentially similar to the mainframe-green-screen before PC’s) Use-cases were few, but they were pretty much the same as todays: CRM, Reporting and others such as Work Order Confirmation in PM, etc. Underlying WAP technology itself wasn’t ready for prime time A little bit of History (cont’d) It’s new… (again) ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Devices now allow mobile computing like never before Usability is great and accepted by end-users Mobile device sales outperforms PC sales Bandwidth (3G, 4G, etc.) now allows fast data access, even video streaming Wireless hotspots are widely available Applications are available SAP founded a “Mobility Center of Excellence” A little bit of History (cont’d) Now… maybe one screen of your Executive’s iPad already looks like this… Three (hundred) questions… What Who / Where Technology Reporting? Workflow? Alerts? CRM? Accounts Payable? From shop-floor to top floor? Executives? Field Sales Organization? Our Plant Maintenance force? Receiving dock? Mobile Platform (MEAP)? Devices? Apps (buy or build)? Security? SAP App Store? Barcode scanning? CoA’s, MSDS’s? Does eMail belong here? In China? “Future Proof” A better list … Top 10 Questions before you start Mobility ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ What business processes should be mobilized? Priority? What existing business applications are involved (SAP ERP, BI, etc.)? Who will be involved (IT, Business, Partner)? How many end-users? Will we establish a device standard? What’s the mobile platform technology? What are the target countries for deployment? What mobile data plans are in place? How are we supporting end-users, how will APP upgrades be handled? Device Management Plan: How to commission and de-commission devices? Security and access policy? How are we funding such an initiative? A few answers… ‣ On Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP): Gartner’s “rule of three” can help - a MEAP offers significant advantages in three situations: ‣ When there are 3 or more mobile applications ‣ When there are 3 or more targeted operating systems or platforms ‣ When they involve the integration of 3 or more back-end systems ‣ ‣ Stick to as few devices and as few operating systems as possible. Complexity will get huge if you allow a diversified device and OS structure. If you are a global player, this will be a challenge A lot of answers will be “It depends...”, i.e. consulting will be needed One of SAP’s answers… Customer Example: Scenario ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Global $1 billion Chemical Customer with Headquarters in the Mid-West Aggressive growth path over the last 5 years Implemented various SAP products in 2009/2010 Requirement to provide business data on mobile devices was identified very early ‣ Currently has various mobile apps deployed to support executives, sales force, and supply chain ‣ Started out building a mobility strategy in 2011 Customer Example: Initiation Workshop ‣ 2-day workshop to lay a foundation People-readiness, process reengineering, and change management Mobility and Expense governance Mobile security management Mobile application development/ management Mobile device and device management Mobile user experience framework Mobile applications roadmap Mobile technology infrastructure Mobile architecture framework Step 1: Have an Enterprise Vision & Strategy Enterprise Vision and Strategy Enterprise Business Mobility Strategy Step 2: Review the Demand for Mobility ‣ A “simple request” the IT department was getting: Can I get that (Read: “Any”) information on my: ‣ iPhone? ‣ iPad? ‣ Android? ‣ Phone? ‣ Own phone? ‣ Mac at home? Step 3: Do your Research ‣ Global Survey: “Digital Megatrends 2015 - The Role of Technology in the New Normal Market” by Oxford Economics Step 3: Do your Research (cont’d) ‣ Special Report: “Mobile Outlooks 2012” by Kevin Benedict covering: ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Mobile Strategy in the Enterprise Mobile Strategy Influences Deployment Strategy Apps, Devices, Platforms and Skills Approaching your Day-to-Day Infrastructure Development Tools Step 4: Building the Business Case ‣ Strong Business Needs ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Keep business processes moving Faster decisions Information access Training Product marketing New Trends in IT ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Cloud-based services Unwired mobile Multiple devices Mobile BI Step 4: Building the Business Case (cont’d) ‣ Mobility Innovation and Advances ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ iOS, Android, RIM, Windows Slate, Windows 8 Application development Voice, video, data Mobility Maturity ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Faster networks Better GPS New sensors (compass, accelerometer) Faster processors Better, larger displays Step 5: Define Mobility for your organization ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Always on Always connected Ubiquitous Immediate Internet of things Focused on process Compact Secure Trivial to use Work/personal mash-up Step 6: Zero in on your own Mobility Rules ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ Keep business processes moving anywhere Allow decision making from anywhere Data consumed “on the go” Data entered at the source ‣ ‣ ‣ iOS: iPhone, iPad Laptop: Windows 7 Email and communications (SMS, video, etc.) ‣ Security and simplicity are key More at upcoming Events “Enterprise Mobility 2012” conference next week from 10/29 to 10/31 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas – Join me on 10/31 from 10am - 11.15am for my session: “How to deploy critical SAP reports to the iPad” I will also be available as part of “Ask the experts” on 10/30 at 5pm at the same location 2.5 hour Mobility for Supply Chain Jump-Start session at beginning of this conference, hosted in Las Vegas from March 5-8, 2013 and in Prague from April 24-26 Questions?
