guidance and reduces edge damage
Market leader with a proven track record of reliability
3
The „BIG DATA‟ challenge
Requires increased everything: performance, capacity, connections, objects, demand...
“ Every two days we create as much information as we did from the dawn
of civilization up to 2003”
— Eric Schmidt, Google

Why choose
HP Storage Media?
“HP stands behind their products and HP
storage media was a natural choice for
Deloitte. HP storage systems have
demonstrated that our data can be restored
in an emergency. This is critical in our
industry where losing data is not an option.”

Why choose HP LTO branded media?
•
HP testing applies to every batch before it is
shipped to customers
− Failed media is stopped, even if it would pass normal
industry standards
HP testing relates to how drives
and media are used in real life,
not just in laboratories

Environmental
Interchange
Environmental tests are conducted at
five conditions
HP tests at five conditions with cartridges tested
a minimum of 24 hours at each condition.
Drop Testing
No test required
Cartridges are dropped from a height of .75m
at least six times on all surfaces. (top face,
bottom face, and four sides).
Load/Unload
No test required
Over 25,000 automated mechanism cycles
prove the reliability of the leader pin assembly,
and the cartridge loading process.

HP LTO Testing Goes Above and
Beyond Industry Standards
Test
Industry Standard Requirements
To Qualify for HP Brand
Thermal
Aging
No test required
Tests require cartridges to be kept at 120F
80%RH for 7 days. Tape performance is verified
using drive based tests.
Ship and
Store
Tapes are stored at low humidity
conditions before being used with a
tape system to verify write/read
capabilities
Tapes are stored at extreme environmental
conditions (including 50°F 10%RH,
120°F 15%RH and 84°F 80%RH), before drive
based tests verify write/read capabilities.
Shoeshine
No test required
The “shoeshine” test simulates excessive
repositioning on a short section of tape, before it
is rewound and read for 25,000 cycles.
Green
Tape Test*
This test is conducted to assess drive/tape performance, when multiple brand new tapes
are used successively. HP conducts ongoing Green Tape Tests, using different tape coating
lots.
*A "Green Tape" is a tape cartridge that has never been used and still in the same condition as when it
was manufactured. Brand new, unused tapes are typically at their most abrasive – once used, the tape
abrasivity decreases. “Green Tapes” are typically used for archival.

LTO-5 has LTFS (Linear Tape File System)
LTFS was introduced with LTO-5 and enables tape
to behave like a disk
13
•
LTFS provides a self-describing file system on an HP
LTO-5 cartridge, enabling application independence,
transportability, and protection from obsolescence.
•
LTFS enables sharing data across platforms, as you
would with a USB drive. Simply load a tape into the
drive, mount it into the file system, and it becomes
visible as a disk.
•
LTFS provides the ability to use standard file
operations on LTO-5 tape media for accessing,
managing, and sharing files with an interface that
looks just like a hard disk.
•
LTFS is ideal for data intensive companies that need
storage solutions that simplify operations, improve
manageability, and meet their long term data
retention requirements.

Why Tape?
SOLUTION: Tape has the lowest total cost of ownership
•
Migrating inactive data to
tape storage frees up
primary storage
•
Storing inactive data on
lower cost tape saves money
•
According to a 2010 study
by The Clipper Group, tape
offers:
–
Lowest TCO at15x less
expensive than disk over 5years
–
Particularly low energy costs disk uses 238x more energy
than tape
22
An ESG 2011 study found that backup and transporting tape
offsite using LTO-5 years was almost 3x less expensive over a 5year period than using VTL with deduplication and replication
Enterprise System Group TCO Study 2011
Tape Technology Will be Obsolete When...
•
Electricity is free
•
Physical storage space is plentiful
•
There are no more viruses or malicious code
•
When no-one makes a mistake in backup or data handling
•
When government regulations for data retention and security have gone away
•
When there are no more natural disasters
•
When hardware and software never fails
23
What‟s driving data protection?
The risk of data loss remains
Human error
System failure
Natural disaster
Sabotage
Two out of five companies that experience a catastrophe or an extended system
outage never resume operations, and of those that do, one-third go out of business
within two years…

Why Tape? Still Key to Data Protection
•
For Backup:
–
•
For Disaster Recovery:
–
•
66% of respondents expected their use of tape for backup to stay the same or
increase during 2010 Purchase Intention Survey by Fleishman Hillard in July 2010
75% of Leading Companies use tape for off-site storage of critical data
— Aberdeen Group Research, October 2010
For Archival:
–
“We predict that large volumes of data will drive users to tape as a less expensive
alternative to disk for infrequently accessed data”
— IDC, January 2011, Storage Trends for 2011
–
“In every dimension the TCO of the tape solution was found to be less expensive
than the disk solution for long-term data retention”
— The Clipper Group Study, December 2010
–
“Throughout ESG‟s study, the LTO-5 Tape option was the least costly backup
solution (in terms of TCO) over a five-year period by a substantial margin”
— ESG Study, March 2011
