Please note that we will not provide additional sacks if you run out before the end of the year. dorsetforyou.com/recycle 5 Food waste collection (weekly) Collecting food waste stops it going to landfill, where it produces harmful greenhouse gases. Food waste will either be composted and turned into a soil improver or used to produce energy. What to put in your brown food bin Yes please ooked and uncooked food, C such as: ✗ No thanks • Garden waste • Meat, fish and bones • Recyclable items (such as bottles and cans) • Fruit and vegetable peelings • Plastics, including plastic bags • Cheese and dairy produce • Pet waste • Cakes, bread and pastries • Nappies • Leftovers, including plate scrapings • Liquids • Tea bags and coffee grounds • Pasta, rice and eggshells • Oil or liquid fats • Food packaging For more information, go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/food Locking your containers Your brown food bin and caddy both have ‘lockable’ lids to keep animals out. To ‘lock’ your container, close the lid and move the handle to the front (as shown in picture). Using your kitchen caddy Your kitchen caddy is there to help you collect food waste in the home before emptying it into your larger food bin outside. It has small holes in the lid to prevent food waste sweating. Please do not put your kitchen caddy out for collection. 6 dorsetforyou.com/recycle You can put food waste straight into your caddy or line it with compostable liners or newspaper to make it easier to empty. Lining your caddy with compostable liners Please only use liners with the ‘compostable’ logo (above). Do not use plastic bags. Compostable liners can be bought at most supermarkets, many local shops and online. For a list of local stockists, go to dorsetforyou. com/recyclefordorset/food or call (01305) 221040. 1. Tie and lift the liner out of your caddy 2. Place into your food bin outside Alternatively, line your caddy with newspaper For more information go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/food Lining your caddy with newspaper Use two sheets of newspaper to line the inside of the caddy, making sure you can close the lid. When the caddy is full, lift the paper ‘parcel’ out and put it into your food waste bin. Tips • Keep the caddy lid closed • You can clean your caddy by swilling it out with a mild detergent or bicarbonate of soda • Your caddy is dishwasher safe dorsetforyou.com/recycle 7 Recycling collection (fortnightly) What to put in your green boxes with lids for general recycling Paper such as: Card such as: Tin and cans such as: Aerosols such as: • • • • • Cereal packets • Food tins • Greetings cards • Drinks cans • Cardboard (including corrugated card) • Deodorant • Hairspray • Furniture polish Bottles such as: Pots such as: Tubs such as: Trays such as: • Milk and soft drinks bottles • Shampoo bottles • Yoghurt, cream and soup pots • Margarine and ice cream tubs • Fruit and vegetable punnets Newspapers Envelopes Directories Shredded paper (small quantities) Plastics For more information go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/recycling ✗ No thanks: Glass • Plastic film • Plastic bags • Polystyrene • Foil • Crisp packets • Waxed food/drinks cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak) • Clothes and textiles • Food waste • Garden waste • General rubbish Please: Put items in loose • Flatten cardboard boxes • Rinse out cans and plastics • Squash cans and plastics if possible • Make sure aerosols are empty and not pierced • Squeeze air out of bottles and replace lids 8 dorsetforyou.com/recycle Recycling collection (fortnightly) What to put in your green box without a lid Yes please •Glass bottles and jars (all colours) ✗ No thanks • Broken glass • Lightbulbs • Oven-proof glass (e.g. Pyrex) • Sheet glass and windowpanes • Tops and lids • General rubbish and recycling For more information, go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/recycling Batteries Use your reusable bag for household batteries (such as AA, AAA, ‘button’ and rechargeable batteries). Place the bag on top of one of your green recycling boxes with a lid. Additional recycling We will collect additional recycling if it is put in similar sized boxes to your green recycling boxes. Always keep glass separate. Paper and cardboard needs to be put in a box with a lid to keep it dry, but glass does not. Why collect glass separately? If glass smashes and gets mixed in with other materials, it reduces the quality of materials, such as paper, that can be recycled. Collecting it separately allows us to sort the materials easily and produce better quality recycling. dorsetforyou.com/recycle 9 Please We want all your plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles in your container for general recycling All pots Films (e.g. yoghurt pots) (e.g. peel-back lids) All tubs Bags (e.g. ice cream and margarine tubs) (e.g. carrier bags and cereal bags) All trays (e.g. microwave food trays) All bottles (e.g. drink bottles and detergent bottles) All plastic lids 10 dorsetforyou.com/recycle For more information visit: www.dorsetforyou.com/recyclefor-dorset/recycling/plastics Rubbish collection (fortnightly) What to put in your blue authorised sacks ✗ No thanks * Yes please Rubbish that can’t be recycled, including: • Disposable nappies • Plastic film and polystyrene • Broken glass (wrapped in paper) • Cold ashes • Pet waste (including cat litter) • Medical and sanitary waste • • • • Garden waste Hot ashes Clinical waste (such as syringes) Hazardous waste (such as paint, oil, chemicals, gas bottles and low energy light bulbs) • Commercial waste For more information, go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/rubbish *See page 12 for items that are accepted and can be recycled at household recycling centres (HRCs).
