Of course you know how to shake hands
but a fun primer won't hurt a bit!
When – notice the positive thinking here in the word selection of "when," not "if"
– you get an interview for the job of your dreams, you'll want to do everything
right so you can land that job. We're here to help you with the basics.
Handshake don'ts
Handshake dos
• Grip too loosely. Weakness isn't a
great trait in a future employee.
• Hold tight. A firm squeeze will do.
• Grab too high up. You are not checking a pulse, you are applying for a job!
• Pump too many times. Be enthusiastic, not annoying and over-eager.
• Sweat. Cool off before the interview
with some ice water. Can you discreetly wipe your nervous, damp right
hand on your clothing? Do it.
• Get fancy. Save the high fives and
fist pumping for your teammates and
sorority sisters.
• Locate the palm and grip. Too low
and you feel like a limp fish, too high
and you are locking wrists.
• Two or three pumps will do. And
while you do this, look into the eyes
of your interviewer. Yes, you can
multi-task!
• Keep it clean. See a dispenser of
hand sanitizer on the counter, use it!
• Err to conservative side. A simple
handshake is best. Skip the extras of
hand-holding and back slapping.
