Rian Johnson/Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz US 2009, 109mins 18th - 24th June Dir. Michael Winterbottom/Starring: Casey Affleck, Elias Koteas, Jessica Alba Wearing the charms and eccentricities of Wes Anderson on its sleeve, THE BROTHERS BLOOM is a much anticipated second feature from Rian Johnson (BRICK). Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo pair up as the dysfunctional Bloom brothers, an orphaned sibling outfit who lay claim to being the best conmen in the world. As the kings of their game, the brothers rejoice in leading a dishonest life, swindling the rich with their dashing charm and guile. But Bloom, growing restless and itching with discontentment, shies away from the fraudulent lifestyle. Until, that is, Stephen, the elder of the two, convinces him to take on one last job. Winterbottom’s sublime and shocking film noir is based on American crime writer Jim Thompson’s 1952 novel of the same name. Affleck plays a small town deputy sheriff who polices the streets of his small town with a crocodile smile and the dead eyes of an insane killer. The film makes a brutal statement about the corruption of the human soul, but it is also a powerful and arresting piece of genre-defying cinema. Winterbottom is one of the few directors with the intelligence, vision and bravery to pull it off, which he does with aplomb in his most provocative work to date. Peru’s first Oscar-nominated film and winner of the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival,THE MILK OF SORROW is a tender and sumptuously photographed magic realist film, which tackles the tough social issues experienced by a generation of women during Peru’s period of civil unrest in the 1980s. Forceful lead character Fausta is said to suffer from the ‘Milk of Sorrow’, an affliction purportedly transmitted through a mother’s milk, which is part psychological and part spiritual-folkloric. Screening on 16th June will be followed by a discussion with Jelke Boesten - Centre for Global Development, University of Leeds & Peru Support Group BHUTTO charts the tumultuous life and violent death of two-time Pakistani Prime Minster Benazir Bhutto. As beloved by the people of her country as she was reviled by the nation’s military establishment and male-dominated ruling class, Bhutto remains a symbolic metaphor for the fight between terrorism and moderation being played out on the world stage today. Two years after her murder, this fascinating documentary uses archived news clips and interviews with Bhutto’s family, allies and even opponents. BHUTTO is, in many ways, a history of Pakistan itself, told through the lens of the Bhutto family’s politics. A funny and grown-up comedy, GREENBERG stars Ben Stiller in his juiciest role yet as the single, forty-ish failed musician Roger Greenberg, who, newly released from a mental institution after a breakdown, goes off to Los Angeles to house-sit in his successful brother’s Hollywood home. Once there, Greenberg tries to reconnect with old friends but finds himself spending an increasing amount of time with his brother’s assistant Florence, also something of a lost soul. Selfish and neurotic, Roger is a brilliant invention and as he navigates LA and his personal relationships it is impossible not to be swept along in the current of his neuroses. “A terrifically enjoyable British film from debut writerdirector J Blakeson, who on the tightest of budgets delivers a professionally honed thriller...cracking energy.” - THE GUARDIAN 04 NEW RELEASES ROBIN HOOD 05 NEW RELEASES 12A UK/US 2010, 140mins 26th - 28th June Dir. As Crowe dons some tights to play the eponymous archer, ROBIN HOOD is the perfect piece of escapism on a lazy summer evening. With Maid Marian and his Merry Men at his side, Hood clashes with the establishment, headed by newly crowned King John. Set in the year 1000 AD, VALHALLA RISING follows One-Eye, a mute Norse warrior with superhuman strength, and his boy sidekick Are, who aides One-Eye in his breakout from the prison where he has been held for years. Once free, the pair set out on a journey that quickly descends into darkness, as they board a Viking boat and arrive at a mysterious unknown land that will change One-Eye’s reality forever. “Grown up but not too serious; action packed but not juvenile.” - EMPIRE MAGAZINE “True to form, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn’s movie of the middle ages is unremittingly dark – but weirdly beautiful.” -THE OBSERVER THE TIME THAT REMAINS 15 THE GHOST 15 REVANCHE 15 04th and 05th July AUS 2008, 121mins Dir. Gotz Spielman/Starring: Andreas Lust, Irina Potapenko, Johannes Krisch, Ursula Strauss At once a gripping thriller and a tragic drama of nearly Greek proportions, REVANCHE is the stunning, Oscar–nominated, international breakthrough film from Austrian filmmaker Götz Spielmann. In a ragged section of Vienna, hardened ex-con Alex (the mesmerising Johannes Krisch) works as an assistant in a brothel, where he falls for Ukrainian hooker Tamara. Their desperate plans for escape unexpectedly intersect with the lives of a rural cop and his seemingly content wife. With meticulous, elegant direction, Spielmann creates a tense, existential, and surprising portrait of vengeance, redemption, and a journey into the darkest forest of human nature, in which violence and beauty exist side by side. “Films as elegantly nuanced and carefully written as this one just don’t come along very often” - THE INDEPENDENT ‘Confirms [Spielmann] status as one of Austria’s most accomplished contemporary filmmakers… masterful… intelligent and unpredictable’ - Sandra Hebron, LONDON FILM FESTIVAL “As good a thriller as you’ll see this year.” - EMPIRE MAGAZINE VINCERE 15 DIRTY OIL U BE/FR/UK/IT 2009, 109mins 02nd - 04th July Dir. A beautiful, unique, and deeply personal depiction of Palestine since 1948 from the acclaimed director of DIVINE INTERVENTION.THE TIME THAT REMAINS is a semi-autobiographical film, in four episodes. Inspired by the private diaries of Suleiman’s father and his mother’s letters to family members who were forced to leave the country. Combined with intimate memories of them and with them, the film attempts to portray the daily life of those Palestinians who remained, living as a minority in their own homeland. Pierce Brosnan, Ewan McGregor and master auteur Roman Polanski team up for this adaptation of Robert Harris’ tense political thriller. Brosnan stars as Adam Lang, a former British Prime Minister (a thinly veiled Tony Blair) accused of war crimes, whose resignation prompts an autobiography. He commissions a ghost-writer aptly named The Ghost to complete his memoirs but as The Ghost digs deeper in order to deliver the finished autobiography on time, he becomes wrapped up in a perilous game of political spin and deception that will put his life in danger. This astonishing film tells the secret true story of Italian dictator Mussolini and the secret lover and son whom he covered up. The film follows Ida, one of Mussolini’s secret lovers, who gave up everything for Il Duce when he was a rising star in the Socialist movement. Although she bore him a son, Mussolini’s lust for power sees him switch political, religious and romantic allegiances overnight. He does his best to cover up the relationship, locking Ida in an asylum and his son in an institution, but Ida isn’t prepared to give up without a fight. Building on the current appetite for environmental films examining issues around natural resources and pollution, DIRTY OIL takes us deep behind the scenes into the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada. Here the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil. Through the eyes of scientists,‘big oil’ officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists and aboriginal citizens directly affected by ‘the largest industrial project on the planet today’, the filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to see the irreversible toll this ‘black gold rush’ is taking on our planet. 07 NEW RELEASES 06 NEW RELEASES WILD TARGET CERT TBC WHATEVER WORKS 12A TETRO 15 PLEASE GIVE 15 UK 2010, 90mins 09th - 15th July Dir. However it’s only when Boris meets a young southern runaway and her family that he really starts to discover that life among the nonconformists isn’t quite as carefree as he’d envisioned it to be. “It’s witty, dark, poignant, zany and hilarious, and showcases a New York filtered through the Allen lens as we’ve never seen it before.” - THE NEW YORK OBSERVER Godfather of American filmmaking Francis Ford Coppola returns with his first original screenplay since THE CONVERSATION, with this monochromatic masterpiece about secrets, lies and sibling rivalry. From visionary graphic artist and director Joann Sfar comes a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Serge Gainsbourg. GAINSBOURG is an enchanting glimpse at his early life, growing up in 1940s Nazi- occupied Paris, and through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s until his death in 1991. Taking the best from LA VIE EN ROSE and AMELIE, GAINSBOURG is one of 2010’s highly awaited films brought to us by one of the most beloved graphic artists of our time and the team behind the magical creatures of PAN’S LABYRINTH. A touching story of forbidden love in Jerusalem’s Orthodox community, EYES WIDE OPEN showed to critical acclaim at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the 53rd London Film Festival in 2009. After the death of his father, Aaron Fleishman inherits the family kosher butcher’s shop. When a young Yeshiva student named Ezri arrives on the scene, Aaron finds himself inexplicably drawn to the boy and pursues a relationship that will see him ostracised by the denouncing townspeople. Tabakman’s feature debut is a dark yet delicate morality tale that juxtaposes strict religious values with a forbidden sexual yearning. The Paris Opera Ballet is one of the world’s great ballet companies. LA DANSE is a window into their world. The film immediately draws us into the rehearsals and shows preparations for performances of seven ballets, including The Nutcracker by Rudold Nureyev and Medea by Angelin Preljocaj. It is a testament to both Wiseman’s love of dance and the respect of the Opera that he was allowed full access to film all facets of this revered institution from the administration offices to the costumers department, illustrating the sometime tensions between a commercial sensibility and creative integrity. Jeanne lives in a house in the suburbs with her mother Louise. The two women get on well together. Louise earns her living by looking after children. Jeanne is half-heartedly looking for a job. As the evening unfolds the family dynamic undergoes a subtle but profound transformation, and the clan is forced to confront the limits of its power and self-control. 15 years after his death, Bill Hicks is now more popular than ever, and is widely seen as one of the best comedians of the modern era.
