Our leafy campus has modern, first-rate facilities
for learning and teaching, library study, research,
sports, arts and a vibrant social life. The carefully
tended gardens and parkland blend seamlessly
with playing fields, a picturesque lake, striking
architecture and public art, making the landscaping

The University benefits from major national
facilities on campus, including the Ion Beam
Centre – used by academics from other leading
universities – and Surrey Sports Park, a £36
million world class development that’s home
to a range of professional teams, athletes and
sporting events.
As a first-year student, you’ll be guaranteed a
place in University accommodation, which is
the perfect way to meet other students, spark
friendships and feel at home.
Multi-million-pound investments abound.
The Ivy Arts Centre, the Manor Park student

BEYOND GUILDFORD
The University of Surrey is based in
bustling Guildford, in the heart of south
east England. As the county town of Surrey,
Guildford is consistently viewed as one of
the best places to live in Britain, offering a
blend of entertainment, culture and history.
Just ten minutes’ stroll from campus, the
town is well known as a safe, affluent and
attractive place to live and work. Home to
some of the best shopping in the region,
with a wealth of independent boutiques
lining its beautiful cobbled high street.
The historic, diverse and vibrant delights of London are easily
accessible too – just 34 minutes’ train journey from Guildford
Station. Whether heading up for a West End show, a sightseeing
tour, a night on the town or a spur-of-the-moment day trip,
Guildford is an ideal base from which to explore one of the
world’s most visited cities.
For those venturing or arriving from further afield, Guildford
also enjoys good transport links with the Eurostar and the UK’s
two biggest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick - 30 and 40 minutes
by road respectively.
Guildford offers over 100 places to eat and
drink, with a variety of restaurants and cafes
– from the budget-friendly to the cool and
upmarket – sitting alongside cosy pubs,
stylish bars and buzzing clubs. A frequent
bus service links the town with the

OUR UNIQUE MAJOR / MINOR DEGREES
Our vision for a 5G Innovation Centre – the world’s first research centre
dedicated to mobile technology – is becoming a reality.
Study one subject in depth while also exploring another topic.
A consortium of key global players in
telecommunications has formally joined
Surrey to develop the Centre, together pledging
support worth over £46 million. This group
includes Aeroflex, AIRCOM International,
the BBC, BT, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of
Europe, Huawei, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung,
Telefonica and Vodafone, as well as the
UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom.
Our unique new Major/Minor degrees let
you choose from over 65 subject combinations
to create the perfect balance of studies for your
interests and ambitions.
Most importantly, you will enjoy a
transformation that leaves you academically,
personally and professionally prepared for
an enhanced and exciting range of careers.
What distinguishes our Major/Minor degrees
from mere combined study programmes
at other universities are the special anchor
modules that examine how your two subjects
relate to each other, giving you a third area
of intellectual understanding.
The pledged support (which includes time
and expertise) adds to the £11.6 million already
awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council
for England (HEFCE) under the UK Research
Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF).
These modules also provide a stimulating
group setting for the exploration of ideas
with your fellow Major students. You join
our stand-alone degrees for classes in your
chosen subjects.
And, of course, we give you the opportunity
to take an invaluable Professional Training
placement with one of our partner
organisations in the UK or overseas.

With preparatory building work underway,
the 5G Innovation Centre is on track for
completion in January 2015, when it will become
home to 150 researchers and 100 PhD students.
Focusing on the advanced technologies that will
underpin the 5G network, the Centre will play
a crucial role in the race to provide the capacity
needed to cope with ever-increasing levels
of mobile communications data traffic.
“By bringing together leading academics
with heavyweight industry partners, I believe
we can develop the technologies required for
the future. Ultimately, our vision is to provide
a consistent and reliable mobile communications
service and create the perception of ‘infinite
capacity’,” said Professor Rahim Tafazolli,
Head of Surrey’s Centre for Communication
Systems Research (CCSR).

Writing a good

The personal statement is arguably
the most important part of the UCAS
application. It’s your opportunity to tell
universities why you want to study a
particular course and demonstrate your
passion and enthusiasm for the subject.
You may want to consider the following
questions before drafting your statement:
Universities use the personal statement
to compare you to other candidates with
similar grades. Not all universities will
interview their applicants, so use this
opportunity to showcase your skills
and experience.
•
How have you gone above and beyond the curriculum to demonstrate your interest in this subject? (for example, books you’ve read, taster sessions
you’ve attended)
•
What skills and experience (including work and placements) do you have that would help you succeed at this course and at university?
The personal statement can only be
4,000 characters/47 lines of text long
(including spaces and blank lines),
so it needs to be clear and concise whilst
showcasing your relevant achievements
and talents. If you convey in your own
words an intellectual curiosity and
passion about your chosen subject,
you’ll give the best possible impression
of yourself to the admissions tutor.
• Why do you want to study this particular subject/course?
• How have your current studies helped you prepare for this next step?
• What have you achieved that you’re particularly proud of?
√ Be reflective – explain why you made
certain choices and what you learnt
√ Be honest about your achievements – you may be asked about them
at interview!
√ Ensure you have a good structure and use paragraphs
√ Be clear and concise about the points you’re making
√ Spell check, proof read and show
it to teachers and parents to ensure
there are no mistakes
√ Be passionate about your chosen course - What are your career aspirations?
X Plagiarise – UCAS have advanced software to detect this and will know
X Mention a specific institution unless
you are only applying to one
X Talk about your current syllabus
in lots of detail
X Try to be funny or controversial
• What are your interests/hobbies?
• What skills have you acquired?
• What do you hope to gain
from university?
• What are your career aspirations?

A wonderful kickstart
to your career
Our Professional Training placement programme is one of the largest in
the world, with over 2,300 partner organisations in the UK and overseas.
These organisations provide opportunities for students to put their skills
into practice and to experience a real working environment, and play
a major role in Surrey’s successful track record for graduate employment.
Professor Neil Ward, Chairman of the
Professional Training and Careers Committee,
says, “We have a huge amount of established
networks which we build on all the time. It’s
about training young people to have excellent
professional and personal skills ready for the
world of work.”
As well as helping students to hone their
professional skills, most students are paid on
placements and visited three times a year by
an academic member of their department.
The Professional Training placement team
work in collaboration with colleagues in other
departments, such as the International Relations
Office and the Careers Service to prepare students
for their placements and ensure they receive the
best learning opportunities.
Each year, awards are presented to students
and companies, including a Professional Student
of the Year award, whilst returning students
are encouraged to share their experiences
through presentations.

The key reason for me choosing Surrey
was the opportunity to experience a
Professional Training placement, which
I undertook at Marks and Spencer as a
commercial manager. My placement was
invaluable in helping me to develop the
skills I’ll need in future employment and
in opening my eyes to the different career
paths available in retail.
I had always wanted to experience American
culture, so I was excited when I found out I had
been selected to spend my placement year in the
Planchart-Mattingly lab within North Carolina
State University. I would encourage everyone to
undertake a placement year. Not only does it
help you to figure out what you want to do
after your degree, but you also gain so much
knowledge and life experience.

PhD Researcher in Chemistry
During my third-year placement, I worked
as the Marketing and Media Manager for
the Hilton Buenavista Toledo in Spain.
The best thing about my placement was the
improvement in my Spanish, and it made
me a much better business student too.
I now understand how international
businesses function, and I also know that
I want to work in the marketing industry
when I graduate, so I have great
experience for my CV.
At Surrey, the majority of students undertake
a placement, and I think it would be rare to
find anybody who didn’t find it a useful
experience. I worked within the Wet
Chemistry team in the Analytical department
at BP Castrol where I had my first ever
experience of research, which I discovered
I really enjoyed. Not only was I paid for
a year – I also discovered what
I wanted to do in the future.
