Physical Culture, (or Physie - ‘fizzy’) is a sport for girls and ladies from 3 years to over 63 which aims to build confidence, posture, strength, grace, and flexibility through exercise. Physie can also be a competitive sport. Members may choose to enter the various competitions available OR it can be enjoyed just for fun and exercise. The Brindabella Club is associated with the Bjelke Petersen Bros. School of Physical Culture (BjP) based in Sydney. BjP has 180 clubs in NSW, SA, Victoria, Queensland, and the ACT. Physie is a unique Australian sport that has been providing exercise opportunities to girls and ladies for over 100 years. The syllabus is performed to modern music and comprises marching, standing and floor exercises, aerobic warm-ups, classical ballet and modern jazz dance. The choreography is designed to also teach the relationship of music to movement, rhythm, co-ordination, balance, and musical interpretation. With a new syllabus being written every year for each age group, all girls whether new to physie or a physie veteran, start on equal footing. Physie has many carry over benefits to students by improving memory sequencing and motor coordination. 2. The syllabus The BjP Syllabus consists of 7 routines all targeted at developing various skills while also developing overall fitness, strength and flexibility. Each age group has its own syllabus and music that consist of the following routines: Marching — targets posture, toe point, strength in the legs and middle to upper body. While marching may look easy to spectators, it is a skill that when done properly, will work every muscle in your body! Warm-up — the warm up is a cardiac work out that targets correct positions, strength and control in movement while really getting the heart pumping. Breathing — The breathing routine is aimed at controlled breathing and balance after the bounce of the warm up. It targets correct positions, posture and balance throughout the whole routine. Exercise group — Exercises is a routine that requires strong, exact positions to demonstrate stamina and flexibility. This routine targets positions, posture, flexibility and controlled movement. Relax — The relax is a very pretty exercise involving basic classical ballet moves. It targets positions, grace and turn out of feet and knees. Floor drill — This exercise is done down on the floor and targets flexibility, strength, positions and control. At this stage it is also testing your fitness and stamina! Dance — The dance is a very modern jazz style dance that everyone loves to learn. It is often to great funky music that really gets your hips wiggling. The dance targets stamina, strength and presentation with a big smile a very important ingredient to a great dance. BjP has also developed a syllabus targeted at girls aged 3-4 years that aims to teach basic movement and positions to fun, interactive music. Age group is determined by the age on 31 August each year. The age groupings for girls in BjP physie are as follows: 3–4 Years; 5–6 Years; 7–8 Years; 9–10 Years; 11–12 Years; 13–16 Years; 2nd Year & Novice Open Seniors (17–19 Years); Open Seniors (19 Years +); Ladies - Beginner & First Year Ladies (any age over 21); Ladies - Second Year Ladies (any age over 21); Ladies - Open Ladies (Under 33 Years, Over 33 Years, Over 43 Years and Over 53 Years). 3. DVDs and CDs of the syllabus BjP has different music for each age section. This music is used in all competitions. In class, we use a practice CD until the official music is issued in April. Members may order a CD through Miss Emily from BjP if they wish to practice at home. DVDs of the syllabus are also available later in the year. Newsletters will advise when CD and DVD become available. Members do not have to purchase a music tape or video. It is for added assistance. 4. Enrolment forms 7. Code of conduct Please fill in and return before 30 March. Please notify if you change your address or phone number during the year. Enjoy your physie • Enjoy your physie class and competitions. • Make friends with your club-mates, supporters and competitors by being your friendly self. Let others enjoy physie • Show respect for your teachers, club-mates and supporters. • Treat others as you would like to be treated. Look for the best in others. Do not criticise, even in jest. • If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything. • Be honest with yourself, but remember your opinion is just that, an opinion. Others have the right to disagree. Support your club • Be loyal to your club and the people in it. • Encourage club members and support them at comps — show your club spirit. Remember teams are made up of eight girls and your teacher and club-mates depend on you — everyone needs to follow through with their commitment to practices. • There is no ‘I’ in a TEAM — and a team won’t do well unless EVERYONE works hard. Be a good sport • Compete and be happy, regardless of the results. • You can only do your best — if you enjoy yourself on the floor, the judges and audience will enjoy watching you! • Use comps to get to know girls from other clubs, be happy for others and congratulate them when they do well — sometimes the best lessons come in defeat. Do your best • Set goals and work to achieve them. • Work hard ALL year. • Attend as many classes as you can. Practice at home. • Work in class like you would in competition — always push yourself to do your personal best.… but keep things in perspective • If you don’t do as well as you hoped, it’s not the end of the world. • If you are disappointed, remember, results depend on the view of two judges on one specific day and performance. Tomorrow, results could change. Other judges may see it differently. NEVER be put off by one result. Next time it might be different, so keep trying!! 8. Structure of classes 11. Official leotards • Students be ready 5 minutes before the time of their class. Clothes and shoes off, ready to commence work. This applies to all ages. • TEENAGERS – NO mobile phones OR IPODS!!!!!. Unlike many dance organisations, Physical Culture only requires you to have ONE BjP leotard for competitions. The Club is sent a catalogue of BjP regulation leotards and samples to try on in Term 1. To compete in Interclub and Champion Girl Competitions, a regulation BjP leotard must be worn. 9. Competition The competitions are fun and with the support of family and friends, it becomes quite a social event. Notes will be sent out prior to a competition. Champion Girl (Zone) Champion Girl is simply each student competing individually, performing their routines as taught in class. The dancer competes against others from Brindabella and from other clubs. Clubs are divided into zones. Brindabella Club is in the Riverina Zone. The place getters in the Zone competition then compete in a state competition. AND then from here, the place getters represent their club at the Opera House or the States Sports Centre. A regulation BjP leotard must be worn and each competitor must be registered. Teams This competition is on the same day as Champion Girl (see above). Teams are made up of 8 dancers plus 1 reserve. All dancers in a team are from the same age group. When working on the floor, all dancers must work identically — this is what they are judged on. A little bit like synchronzied swimming on the dance floor! These dancers represent our Club. All team members will receive a medal if their team is placed. All Teams are dressed in black BjP leotards and these are supplied by Brindabella Physical Culture Club. Interclub Competitions Physie clubs get together to hold a competition to meet and mix with other clubs. These competitions are very relaxed and not serious. A regulation BjP leotard must be worn. Annual Club Competition It is the end-of year competition for the Brindabella Club alone. All Club members must attend this competition. The Club supplies the black team leotards for Teams Competitions. Prices are approximately Junior leotards $50.00 and Senior leotards $60.00. If you do not wish to purchase a new leotard, there are girls who may have leotards from previous years who will lend or sell them to new girls. Girls are not required to purchase a new BjP leotard every year. You can use the same BjP leotard until you grow out of it! Please note: BjP leotards are not received by clubs until 1st September. 10. Mechandise Club jackets The Club’s colours are black and yellow. Purchase of the Club jacket is optional.
