Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
At Therapeutic Associates Bethany Physical Therapy, we offer a comprehensive Pelvic Floor
Rehabilitation Program that provides highly effective treatment. We treat a variety of health issues
and offer services to males, females and pediatric patients.
Pelvic Floor Muscles
The muscles in our pelvis, often called the “Kegel Muscles”, have 5 important roles in our body:
They SUPPORT the pelvic organs, bladder and colon
They STOP and START the flow of urine and the passage of gas or stool by closing the sphincters
They serve for SEXUAL function
They STABILIZE the hips, lumbar spine, sacrum, and pelvis during movement to reduce low back,
hip and lower extremity pain
• They may provide “SUMP PUMP” ability for the lymphatic system which carries away toxins of
the body, and protects against disease
•
•
•
•
If you are having problems in one of these categories, that means these muscles may not be
working optimally in other roles in your body.
What Can Physical Therapy Do For You?
Based on your needs, treatment may consist of:
Pregnancy & postpartum physical therapy:
• Education of pelvic floor anatomy and
function
• Exercise of pelvic floor and associated muscles
• Instruction of bladder/bowel health
• Diet modifications
• Bladder re-training exercises and habits
• Modalities
• Manual therapy including stretching, soft
tissue massage and joint mobilization
• Relaxation exercises and biofeedback
• Education to safely stay active during all
stages of pregnancy, with specific exercise
program designed to meet your needs
• Instruction in proper mechanics to prevent
sprain/strains
• Treat joint and muscle dysfunction that
may contribute to pregnancy related pain
• Provide birthing positional advice to
improve your labor experience and decrease
chance of complications
What to Expect on Your First Visit:
1. 30-60 minute evaluation.
2. Talk with a PT about prior history, current habits, pain or leaking, pregnancies and back pain.
3. Musculoskeletal exam including an abdominal assessment, external and internal assessment if and only
if patient feels comfortable.
4. Based on assessment, initiate treatment including education, strengthening, relaxing or soft tissue work.
5. Plan for future appointments about once a week for 4-8 weeks depending on condition.
