English II Summer Reading 2013 Osceola Fundamental High School

English II Summer Reading 2013
Osceola Fundamental High School
What is the right thing to do? That is the question.
This summer all English II students will read a young adult novel paired
with the Greek tragedy, Antigone. The novels will have a parallel theme
that addresses the central question of: What is the right thing to do.
Students will have a choice:
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
Bruiser by Neal Schusterman
English II Honors students will read one of the young adult novels and the
play Antigone over the summer.
Back at School
Returning to school in the fall, all students will have a check test on their
summer reading to demonstrate understanding of plot, characters, and
theme. The English II students will begin the school year reading Antigone
in their classes. The English II Honors students will begin their first writing
assignment of a comparison contrast paper about the two books.
All students will explore the ethics in decisions made by characters in their
novels, the process of decision-making, and how one determines what is
the right thing to do.
