Why our work is vital
The facts

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and
adults under 40.
Over 8,500 people are diagnosed every year with a primary
brain tumour, including 500 children. As many brain tumours
are not recorded, the figure could be much higher in reality.
Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by, on average, 20 years
– the highest of any cancer.
Survival rates are desperately low, at just 15% at 5 years, and
this has not improved in 20 years.
Over £500 million is spent on cancer research in the UK every
year, yet less than 2% is spent on brain tumours.
Together we will change this.
What we fund
The Research
As the largest dedicated funder of research into
brain tumours in the UK, this year we will invest
£2.5m in research. Recently we are seeing
results that show that our process of funding
projects is working; making breakthroughs in
understanding, diagnosing and potential new
treatments.
The Support and Information
The Brain Tumour Charity provides expert
support and information for people affected by
adult and paediatric brain tumours of all types
and grades. Our services cover phone, online,
and face to face support.
The Awareness
Our current campaign is to raise awareness of
the symptoms of brain tumours in children and
young people. HeadSmart has already reduced
average diagnosis times in the UK from 11
weeks to 6.9 weeks since 2011, which has been
proven to reduce long-term disabilities and
ultimately save children's lives.
£250 could cover a day of research for one of our leading
brain tumour researchers to further the understanding of a
particular type of brain tumour to provide more targeted
treatments.
£3,000 could fund a clinical trial to test new treatments are
safe and can be made available to all patients
£80,000 could fund an early-phase clinical trial to test new
treatments.
