The Caravanner – Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians – Fall – 2009 – PAGE -1 - A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF THE RECREATIONAL VEHICLE FELLOWSHIP OF ROTARIANS, N.A., INC. FALL EDITION EDITOR DEBBIE CONOVER OCTOBER, 2009 For Updated Information check the Fellowship Web Site at www.rvfellowshipofrotary.org The Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians, NA, Inc. is not an agency of, or controlled by, Rotary International “Why haven’t we heard about the RV Fellowship before?” Last summer, when Clark and I attended the RI Convention in Los Angeles, we worked at the RVF Booth in the House of Friendship. I mean, we really worked in the booth – we were there for hours everyday. We’d volunteered at other conventions, for an hour or two, but had never experienced anything like we did in LA. I lost track of how many times I heard something similar to, “I didn’t even know these fellowships existed.” “Why haven’t we heard about the fellowships before?” It would appear that the Fellowships are Rotary’s best-kept secret. In our travels, when we makeup our Rotary meetings, we invariably meet someone who has an RV, but is not a member of our fellowship. They’ve never heard of us. As a member of one of the 66 Rotary Fellowships, I think we have an obligation to share what we enjoy so much. Think about giving a program to your Rotary club on the fellowships. Visit neighboring Rotary clubs, promoting fellowships. Ask your District Governor if he/she has appointed a District Fellowship Chair and ask for a presentation to be done at a District Assembly or P.E.T.S. To encourage people to attend our 2010 Annual Rally in connection with the RI Convention, in Montreal, we are promoting caravans from each of our zones. In this issue of the Caravanner, you will find a form to submit if you are interested in joining one of these caravans. We have a Wagon Master for the caravan from the Pacific Zone. We’ll need volunteers to lead any other caravans that will be formed. You’ll also find a registration form for the Montreal rally. Please register early. At this time, we have 50 spaces reserved. Hopefully, we can get more if we need them. LOOKING AHEAD, believe it or not, we’re already working on the 2011 Annual Rally to be done in conjunction with the RI Convention in New Orleans. I’ve got one volunteer to be a co-Wagon Master. If you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact me. RVF President REBA PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT THE WEBSITE FOR A COLOR VERSION OF THE NEWSLETTER. The new Board of Directors would like to use The Caravanner to recognize some of our members who have made the Fellowship a special organization for other members. The board realizes there are many such members in our fellowship. If you have someone you would like to recognize, please contact a zone director to suggest someone as Rver of the Quarter. RV’ERs OF THE QUARTER We are recognizing Carter and Phyllis Wind this quarter. This is the consensus of all those who have rallied with the Winds since 1989 or served with him during his 10 years on the RVF board. He started his first challenge in the US Air Force as an enlisted man but retired a Major. In the course of their military assignments the Winds, while stationed in Germany, adopted their two children, a son Kenneth, now in San Diego, and daughter Susan who now lives in Kentucky. Following the Air Force career Carter joined Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City as Vice President in 1969. The next step came in 1973, according to his wife Phyllis; they bought the farm in Kentucky, another challenge. And now the farm in Lebanon, Kentucky is where they are an active couple. Carter has been in the Rotary Club of Lebanon since 1985 where he has held most of the positions available, including President. In their community Carter and Phyllis were named Marion County “Outstanding Citizens” in 2003 and Carter was named Business Person of the year in 2005. Also after moving to Kentucky Carter taught Computer Science full time at St Catharine College for 10 years. They also do a little farming (at least a vegetable garden) and plan their next trip. The Winds will celebrate their 63rd anniversary in December. Congratulations!!!! In 2001 at the RVF Annual meeting Carter Wind, Carter and Phyllis Wind who then was Secretary of the Fellowship, accepted another challenge. He became Treasurer of The Fellowship While Treasurer, Carter not only kept the books in balance but acted as registrar for all the annual meetings during his tenure. Carter and Phyllis have been an integral part of the RVF since their joining in 1989. If you haven’t met them or enjoyed their company just keep attending rallies. Though they sold their RV they promise to make rallies whenever they can and continue the fellowship experience, as the Winds say, “as long as Father Time will permit”. Website for the park: http://www.campingalouette.com/english/presentat ion/presentation.htm If you would like to caravan to the convention, ALL Zone representatives will be notified of your intention from the form below. Please let Richard Ward know of your intentions as soon as possible. Pacific Zone has set a start date leaving California June 10 arriving in Montreal in time for the Rally. Contact email for Pacific Zone is Bob Traister at thegov@sbcglobal.net Border Crossing into Canada. Some crossings have no RV/bus lane, and it may be faster or easier to go through the car lanes rather than the truck lane, HOWEVER if your mirrors are located at the side and not at the front of your RV, your unit could be too wide for the car lanes. A better move is to look for a bus lane or as a last resort to take the slower moving truck lanes. The next Caravanner will have more tips for crossing into Canada. ROLLING ROTARIANS CENTRAL Zone Impromptu Rally, Texas September 3 – 7, 2009 Lake Buchanan Keith and Sharon Goudy We had a really laid back rally at Big Chief RV Park. It was too hot to do anything else. There were no organized tours since many of us were there two years ago. We just “chilled out” together Thursday evening for our usual heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Mike had a hamburger cookout Friday evening with everyone bringing a side dish. We enjoyed a restaurant Saturday evening. It rained for breakfast but…. at least we were together! The following couples joined us for the rally: Al & Ann Brieger, Denny & Kathy Pfaltzgraff, Mike & Mary Pinson, Ken Altfather & Barbara Lucas, Keith & Sharon Goudy, Stan & Eileen Duitscher, Clyde & Janice Glosson. Advance Notice For the FINAL, FINAL ROTARY ROCK ROLLER RALLY Mark your calendars now for October 1 – 4, 2010 to join Wagonmasters Dave & Bev Stomps at Gold Point , NV. A tour of Goldfield, NV and the Castle More about Goldfield: Tom Fisheman (a local Indian) led Harry Stimler to the bonanza location of the pot of gold, Goldfield. In 1904 there was a large Asian community, which included Chinese and Japanese that were employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. They were changing the Narrow gauge RR to Standard gauge on the Carson & Colorado Railroad. The miners and businessmen ordered the Asians out of town and they left immediately. The year before there was an Anti-Chinese riot in Tonopah. The one exception to the racial problems in Goldfield was the Black community. They filled the low-income jobs such as porters, household help and unskilled laborers. Some of the Blacks had their own businesses, such as cleaners, dance halls and a brothel. The FINAL FINAL ROTARY ROCK ROLLER RALLY will take place in our favorite place, Gold Point, where Sheriff Stone and Red Dog Lil will take great care of us. Gold Point is only a few miles from Goldfield and we will have a tour guide to show us the whole town.
