Name three (3) duties that individual board members have in common: 1. Duty of Care: Many people call this the “reasonably prudent person standard” – you’d do what anyone else would in the same situation. In other words, you’d handle the organizations affairs as you would your own. You will attend meetings, keep up-to-date, read materials and ask good questions. 2. Duty of Loyalty: Your allegiance is to the organization, and you put the nonprofit’s affairs ahead of your own when there’s a conflict. 3. Duty of Obedience: Nonprofits are public trusts. You must be faithful to the mission and forego personal reasons for being on the board. The organization was created with a specific charter, and until changes are made legally, it’s your job to see that the mission is fulfilled. A. List Seven (7) responsibilities that the governance board must collectively execute: 1. Mission Planning: answering the questions—what is our reason for being? What values will we live by, and what is our vision for the future? 2. Strategic Thinking: adopting policies and implementing programs to achieve the organization’s mission. 3. Leadership Development: recruiting competent board members and staff to guide the organization. 4. Financial Oversight: adopting the organization’s spending plan, investing excess funds, and frequently auditing income and expense behaviors. 5. Organizational Advancement: procuring adequate supplies of capital to fulfill the organization’s mission. 6. Public advocacy: educating various constituencies about the intrinsic value of the organization’s purpose and presence within the community. 7. Quality Assurance: establishing best practices and measuring performance to determine the overall health of the organization. Jerry Louis Maygarden Jerry attended public schools in Escambia County.
