Dear 8th Grade Parents,
We are thrilled to inform you that we have an exciting and memorable trip
planned for the 8th Grade class to Washington D.C.
The trip will take place on Tuesday, March 29th – Thursday, March 31st, 2011.
We will be flying to Washington D.C. on the first flight out on March 29th (flight
details and times to follow) and will be staying at the Pearlstone Retreat Center in
Reisterstown, Maryland for the duration of the trip.
The itinerary includes tours of Washington D.C.’s historic sites on land and at
sea, a visit to the National Holocaust Museum, a theatre performance, zip lining
and a boat cruise in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor as well as activities at the campsite
we are staying at.
We have gone to great lengths to plan a sensational trip while keeping the trip at
a reasonable cost. The trip cost will be $800: which includes, flight,
transportation, food and all activities.
In order to reserve affordable flights, we are asking for a non-refundable
deposit in the amount of $250 by Monday, January 31st.
The balance will be due two weeks prior to the trip on Monday, March 14.
Scholarships are available upon request. Please fill out the attached scholarship
request form and return them to the Student Life Office along with the deposit no
later than Monday, January, 31st.

It is our pleasure to invite all our 6th grade students to attend our Hillel Middle School, 6th grade Shabbaton on
Fri. Jan. 7 to Sun. Jan. 9, 2011. The Student Life Department at Hillel has put together a fun, exciting and
enriching program for the 6th grade group that will complement and integrate the formal classroom program of
studies.
Our Shabbaton gives our students the opportunity to take what is learned in the classroom and help make it
come alive. Through a series of fun and stimulating programs and activities, the students learn, engage, debate
and question – all while having fun. The Shabbaton also allows our students to develop a rapport as a grade – to
nurture friendships and to create new ones. The students also learn a sense of independence and responsibility
– with the help and capable supervision of an outstanding team of young educators and chaperones from the
school. The Shabbat component will be particularly memorable as our 6th grade group enjoys a beautiful
Shabbat experience together.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHABBATON
1. COST: The cost of the Shabbaton is $300. Please pay by check (to be made out to Hillel Community Day
School). Forms, together with payment, must be handed in to Linda Miller by Monday, January 3rd.
2. FINANCIAL AID: We would like all the students in 6th grade to benefit from this exciting and
educational experience. If finances are a difficulty, please contact Rabbi Spodek, director of student
life. All applications for financial aid are dealt with the utmost privacy.
3. APPLICATION FORMS CLOSING DATE: Please hand the application form in to Linda Miller in the student
life office by no later than Monday, January 3rd. There is limited space – so acceptance to the
Shabbaton will be on a first come, first serve basis.
4. FOOD: A delicious menu has been prepared for the duration of the Shabbaton and the students will be
well fed. Please make sure to detail on the application form, any special dietary requirements. When
sending snacks with your children, please make sure to send snacks that are kosher. All the prepared
food will be prepared with the necessary hashgacha and Kashrut supervision.
5. TRANSPORT: The students will be transported to the Shabbaton site by coach bus. We ask parents to
please limit the size of the luggage. A packing list of what the students should pack for the weekend is
attached. Students will leave for Shabbaton after Tefillah on Friday and must be picked up from the
school on Sunday at 8:00 pm. We will contact you when we are in transit back from Orlando.
6. LOCATION: The students will be sleeping at Florida Lions Camp in Lake Wales, 1 hour south of Orlando.
This amazing site has wonderful facilities and amenities (such as volleyball, basketball, soccer field,
dining hall, modern cabins, a beautiful lake with canoeing and much more) which will ensure our
students have the best Shabbaton experience.
7. RULE AND REGULATIONS: Please make sure to read the stipulated Shabbaton rules and regulations
with your child and make sure all the page of the application form are completed.
8. SPONSOR A CHILD – MAKE A DONATION: No child should be denied this wonderful opportunity because
of financial difficulties. If you are able to sponsor a child or would even like to make a donation –
please send a separate check together with your child’s form. Your donation will be tax deductable and
will go a long way to ensuring that all your children’s friends are able to attend this remarkable
program.

The students are expected to behave at all times in a manner that is fitting for a Hillel student.
Students are expected to be at all the planned activities and programs that have been scheduled on the trip. This
includes tefillah, all meals and all the activities.
There is a zero tolerance policy to bullying and abuse. Students are to treat one another with respect and dignity.
This includes respect for other personal property and privacy.
There is a zero tolerance policy for any substance abuse.
There is a zero tolerance policy for any vandalism of any kind.
Students are to listen to and respect any faculty member or counselor on the trip.
We ask students not to bring cell-phones with on the trip. Cell-phones are expensive and can easily lost or broken.
It also disrupts the trip as if a student is ill or upset, the leadership is unable to deal with it effectively as students
use it as a lifeline to call home before we are able to help. The trip leadership or the school will be able to
contact you should the need arise.
Please note: All rules and regulations outlined in the 2010-2011 student parent handbook apply to the trip as well
as all school sponsored activities.
The trip leadership, in consultation with the school administration, reserve the right to send home any child whose behavior
is deemed inappropriate or against the rules and regulations of that have been detailed above. The students will be sent
home at the parent’s expense and the parents will be responsible for collecting their child.

Dress Code Policy
Hillel’s dress code policy helps sustain a safe campus and represents students’ commitment to learning and
school pride, as well as their respect for each other and the school. The foundation of the dress code is the
recognition of Hillel as a place in which people pray and study Torah daily. Hillel provides a serious, mature
environment so students may concentrate on academics and personal development.
