Select Lord Fairfax Community College as the institution you
plan to attend and your plan of study as Pre-Nursing. Please
indicate you are applying to Summer 2011 (or earlier if you plan
to enroll in classes at LFCC prior to entry into fall program). If

LFCC'S AAS DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
WHEN SHOULD I APPLY? HOW DOES IT BENEFIT ME TO APPLY EARLY?
Applications for the 2011 Class are accepted beginning February 1, 2011 and must be completed by March 31, 2011 at 4 p.m. Current enrollment in missing
prerequisites is not required to apply, but must be completed by the end of Spring 2011 to be eligible for the 2011 program.
By applying early to LFCC and submitting official transcripts of high school and college coursework, the Office of Health Professions will be able to help you with
your course selections for 2011. This would allow us to advise you in a timely manner of any prerequisite requirements you have not met and how you may meet
those requirements, as well as selecting courses that can be utilized to increase the cumulative GPA by the end of the Spring 2011 semester.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO APPLY?
We require all nursing application material(s) be submitted directly to the Office of Health Professions - if you fail to do so, be aware we will not be responsible
for any delays in processing your file. Complete the following and submit (if applicable) in one envelope to Office of Health Professions, LFCC, 173
Skirmisher Lane, Middletown, VA 22645. If applying for acceptance to the nursing programs at the Fauquier campus, you must submit your materials to
the Middletown address. Materials sent to the Fauquier campus will not be accepted and will be returned to you.
1. Apply to LFCC by completing the college application, if not currently attending. You are must complete the application on-line by logging on at
https://apply.vccs.edu Please make sure you indicate your plan of study as Pre-Nursing on the LFCC application and your term to begin no later than
Summer ‘11. If you have transcripts from another college/s that you would like evaluated, please submit original transcripts to Admissions and Records and
complete the “Request to Evaluate a Transcript” form.
2. Apply to the Nursing Program by completing a 2011 Nursing Application form. An application is enclosed with this packet or you can pick up an
application at the Health Professions Office, Room, 107 in the Science and Health Professions Building or you can request one be mailed to you by calling
540.868.7075. If you have MS Word you may access, fill out, and print the form from http://www.lfcc.edu/areas-of-study/areas-of-study-a-to-z/healthprofessions-997/nursing/index.html, but you must submit it by mail or in person.
3. Include with your nursing application, all official transcripts (high school and college in original intact sealed envelope) and a copy of GED scores (if
applicable). We strongly suggest applicant’s to request transcripts be sent to the applicant’s mailing address, so you are fully aware of whether your request
is filled. Put all transcripts with your nursing application into one large envelope and mail or bring to Office of Health Professions, Science and
Health Professions Building, Room 107, LFCC, 173 Skirmisher Lane, Middletown, VA 22645. Remember, do not open any envelope which contains a
transcript, they are no longer “official” to us when opened. If any school refuses to issue “official” transcripts directly to a student, please request they be
sent addressed directly to the Office of Health Professions at the address above. Please do not request transcripts from LFCC or any other community
college in Virginia. Transfer information provided on a subsequent schools transcript is not acceptable in lieu of the actual originating schools transcript.
College graduates must still provide their official HS transcript. GED holders, in addition to a copy of the GED scores, must also submit official high
school transcripts if completed at least through the 9th grade. Home-schooled students must provide a detailed curriculum progress/grade report from their
school administrator.
4. Please note: The required GPA is calculated as of the end of the Fall 2010 semester. All applicants who attempt or complete college or high school courses
after their initial academic file is complete must submit updated transcripts through Fall ’10 prior to the March 31, 2011 deadline. High school seniors must
provide an updated HS transcript for the grading period that ends usually in late January (must be postmarked) before March 31st deadline. All updated
transcripts need to be sent directly to the Health Professions Office at the address above.
WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION GUIDELINES TO THE PROGRAM?

Applicant must hold a high school diploma or GED. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) must be ≥ 2.5. High school graduates and GED holders who
earned less than a 2.5 GPA during high school will be considered for admission if they have generated a college GPA of 2.5 or above based on at least 8
semester college credit hours within a 12-month period.

The following high school courses are required prerequisites with a grade of “C” or higher: Algebra I, Biology, and general Chemistry. Appropriate
developmental or college courses can be substituted for high school deficiencies. All high school and college level prerequisites must be completed by the
end of the Spring 2011 semester to be eligible for the 2011 program.
When possible, material being hand-delivered to campus should be brought to Office of Health Professions - Room 107 in the Science and Health
Professions Building. The Health Professions office is usually open Monday thru Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is the applicant’s responsibility to
request their own transcripts and pay any required fees. Faxed transcripts are not considered “official” for application. Transfer information provided on
a subsequent schools transcript is not acceptable in lieu of the actual originating schools transcript.
WILL I NEED TO SUBMIT ANY OTHER MATERIALS OR TAKE ANY TESTS?
You will be required to take the TEAS test, available at the Learning Center and include the test results in your packet. Testing is available
November 8, 2010 until March 18, 2011. Contact the Learning Center for further information at 540.868.7088.
IS ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM VERY COMPETITIVE? ARE THERE ADMISSION PRIORITIES?
Priority is given to applicants who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, have the strongest academic record and live in the LFCC service region.
WHO MAKES THE ADMISSION DECISIONS? WHEN ARE THE RESULTS GIVEN TO THE APPLICANTS?
The Selection Committee will meet towards the end of April. It is the goal of the Nursing Program to notify applicants of the Committee’s decisions by mid-May.
DOES IT HELP TO TAKE THE PROGRAM SUPPORT COURSES BEFORE STARTING THE PROGRAM?
The Nursing program is an educationally challenging program. Some students may benefit in completing support courses such as psychology, microbiology, and the
sociology while completing the necessary prerequisites, before beginning the nursing program. Applicants are encouraged to take support courses before starting the
program, however, it should be understood that support courses are not treated as prerequisites for admission to the Nursing program.
CAN I BE A REGISTERED NURSE IF I AM A CONVICTED FELON?
In the State of Virginia, if someone has been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor they may not be allowed to take the RN licensing exam. The question of
eligibility to take the RN licensing exam cannot be determined until application for licensure is received by the State Board of Nursing. LFCC has no control over
whether or not the VA-BON will allow the student to take the RN-NCLEX exam.
HOW DO I OBTAIN LICENSURE AS A REGISTERED NURSE?
You must successfully complete an approved nursing education program and pass a licensure exam (NCLEX-RN), which is administered by the National Council of
the State Board of Nursing. You must apply to the regulatory board of the state in which you plan to practice. The general requirements include personal, character,
and criminal background information. Application for the licensure examination will be provided toward the end of the fourth semester in nursing.
DOES LFCC HAVE A PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM?
Yes. Information can be obtained from the LFWCC Health Technology web page at . http://www.lfcc.edu/areas-of-study/areas-of-study-a-to-z/health-professions997/nursing/index.html. The program is three (3) semesters in length.
AAS DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM CHECKLIST
The following is intended as a general guideline for making sure you have taken the necessary steps to apply and be
considered for the Nursing program. It is the applicant’s responsibility to insure that all items arrive prior to the
March 31, 2011, 4 p.m. deadline. Late application materials will not be considered and will make the applicant
ineligible to be considered for the 2011 program. Please understand an applicant may have unique circumstances,
which may require further documentation or verification, in which case the applicant may be asked to furnish material
not mentioned below. Every effort will be made to provide clear instructions to applicants needing to provide such
