With telephones and e-mail, the art of writing letters is almost dead. But you need to remember that everyone enjoys receiving friendly mail. They especially like it when mail is addressed directly to them. A friendly letter from someone you know or a close friend can make your day. Letters from friends can make a friendship stronger. Letters from relatives make them feel closer. The best way to make sure you receive a friendly letter is to send one. Friendly letters are a great way to keep in touch and send thank-you notes. Reading in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It — DIRECTIONS: Read the Parts of a Friendly Letter reference sheet to your parent or guardian. Discuss the parts of a friendly letter. Do this to make sure you both understand them. Then give your parent or guardian the Adult’s Copy: Writing a Letter page. Tell him or her to write a friendly letter to you. Remind him or her to include all the parts of a friendly letter. You write a friendly letter to your parent or guardian on the Child’s Copy: Writing a Letter page. Trade letters with each other and read them aloud. After reading them, make sure each one has all the parts of a friendly letter. Talk about It — After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity!
