MARCEL KORN Anchorage has become a major topic of conversation, product development, and the issue dominating the orthodontic environment. The name behind The Aarhus System™ is one of the most recognized in orthodontics today. Professor Birte Melsen has held the title of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the Royal College, Aarhus, Denmark since 1975, a 35 year tenure. She is the author of more than 300 published scientific articles covering a broad range of topics, holds countless honors for her contributions to orthodontics, and is recognized by her peers as a premier researcher and academic. Professor Melsen’s interest and work in skeletal anchorage began in the 70’s with Jens Kølsen Pedersen. After more than 20 years of investigation, the Aarhus Miniimplant System was introduced in 1996. The Aarhus System is the result of Professor Birte Melsen’s continuing research, development, and dedication to this field. An energetic and dynamic personality, Marcel Korn has distinguished himself as guest lecturer or presenter an impressive 111 times. Knowledgeable in French and German, he frequently speaks before audiences throughout Europe. In the United States he maintains a demanding schedule, balancing a full time practice with in-house seminars and numerous program appearances at the local, state, regional and, especially, the national level. Most recent requests for speaking engagements have come from Canada and Mexico. Dr. Korn’s presentations are lively, engaging and designed to be thought provoking if not sometimes controversial. The topics reflect his years of clinical experience, are handled in a semi-formal manner to accomodate audience interaction, and focused on transferring the material presented to treatment mechanics in a straightforward, systematic manner. Temporary anchorage devices or “TADS” (miniscrews), have developed as tools to combat the non-compliance issue and to enhance orthodontic mechanics in many situations. Standard anchorage, intrusion, extrusion, retraction and protraction are some functions offered by “TADS”. Removable anchorage devices or “RADS”, have existed for many years and have offered the effects of functional appliances along with anchorage control. Mandibular postural control, intrusion effect, extrusion effect are some of the controls offered by “RADS”. This two day presentation will discuss the utilization of and the advantages and disadvantages of TADS and RADS.
