Quick Start Guide
QUICK START GUIDE
The following guide is intended to help you get started using the Sentry Sample Sequencer™. This
guide does not include detailed explanations and should be used in conjunction with the remainder
of this manual to build a full understanding of the Sample Sequencer™.
• Electrical Connections
Connect all electrical connections necessary for the application. If the analyzer being shared
is a batch type analyzer, an end of analysis signal must be connected to the Sequencer™
“End of Batch” input. Without this signal, the Sequencer™ will never advance to the next
sample.
• Starting and Stopping the Sequencer
With the display showing the Operation Screen, press the ENTER key to toggle Sequencer 1
on and off. Press the ESC key to toggle Sequencer 2 on and off.
• Setting the Sequence
With the display showing the Operation Screen, press the MENU key to display the MAIN
MENU. Using the ENTER and arrow keys, go to SETUP and then SEQUENCE. Edit the
sequence by using the up arrow (▲) and down arrow (▼). Move locations within the
sequence using the right arrow (►) and left arrow (◄). Toggle between sequences using the
ENTER key.
Use the ESC key to exit the SET SEQUENCE screen. Changes to the
sequence are automatically saved as you make them.
• Placing Samples in “Sample/Bypass”
Using the same technique as above, use the keypad to navigate to MAIN MENU,
SAMPLE/BYPASS. In this screen, the character “S” indicates the sample point will be
Sampled. The character “B” indicates the sample point will be Bypassed the next time its
position in sequence is up. Use the ▲ and ▼ keys to change between Sample and Bypass.
Use the ► and ◄ keys to move between sample points. Use the ESC key to exit the
SAMPLE/BYPASS screen.
• Setting Sample Timers
Using the same technique as above, use the keypad to navigate to MAIN MENU, SETUP,
TIMERS. The flashing digits indicate the current field being edited. Use the ▲ and ▼ keys to
change the value. Use the ► and ◄ keys to move between fields. Use the ENTER key to
cycle through the sample points. Use the ESC key to exit the SET TIMERS screen.
• Setting the Mode
Using the same technique as above, use the keypad to navigate to MAIN MENU, SETUP,
MORE, MODE. Use the ENTER key to toggle between Continuous and Batch. Use the ▲
and ▼ keys to move between SEQ1 and SEQ2. Use the ESC key to exit the MODE screen.
• Setting the Valve Assignment
Using the same technique as above, use the keypad to navigate to MAIN MENU, SETUP,
MORE, VALVE ASSIGNMENT. Use the ▲ and ▼ keys to change the valves assigned to
SEQ1. If all eight channels are not assigned to SEQ1, the remaining channels will be
assigned to SEQ2. Use the ESC key to exit the VALVE ASSIGNMENT screen. The SET
SEQUENCE screen will automatically appear after the VALVE ASSIGMENT screen.
• Editing the Sample Names
Using the same technique as above, use the keypad to navigate to MAIN MENU, SETUP, PT
DESC. The flashing character indicates the current character being edited. Use the ▲ and
▼ keys to change the character. Use the ► and ◄ keys to move between characters. Use
the ENTER key to cycle through the sample points. Use the ESC key to exit the SET
DESCRIPTIONS screen.

General Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The SENTRY Sample Sequencer is a microprocessor-based instrument capable of electronically
switching up to eight sample streams one at a time to an analyzer and of providing signals to
recorders. If a total of eight sample streams are not needed for one process, the remaining points
may be assigned to a second analyzer. A Sentry manifold sampling valve specially designed to obtain
optimum representative samples is available for sample stream switching with the Sample Sequencer.
The Sample Sequencer reduces the number of required analyzers while maintaining equivalent data
accuracy. Reliable sample analysis comparison is obtained by using a Sample Sequencer with one
dedicated analyzer. In addition, significant operating cost savings are obtained by not having to
install, maintain and service multiple analyzers.
The Sample Sequencer is capable of operating in the continuous mode for continuous-type analyzers
or in the batch mode for batch-type analyzers. In addition, the Sequencer is capable of measuring the
analyzer analog output signal and converting the analog signal to digital data to be sent out via the
Sequencer’s MODBUS® communication port. Using the MODBUS® capability, one can connect a
PC via twisted pair cable to one or more Sequencers for remote monitoring, control and data
acquisition.
Track and Hold outputs are available to provide independent, isolated outputs for each sample point.
Contact closures are also available to provide channel number indication as well as replicating
analyzer alarms.
Figures 1 - 3 illustrate a typical system arrangement for sample stream switching with the Sample
Sequencer. Customer-supplied equipment is shown for clarification.
Modes of Operation
The Sample Sequencer has two programmable modes of operation:
BATCH
Used for analyzers that take a sample "bite" (or batch), produce an analytical result and then
provide a contact signal output, in typically one to 20 minutes.
CONTINUOUS
Used for analyzers that continuously produce an analytical result.
NOTE
If using the Sample Sequencer with a Hach analyzer, see Appendix B.

General Description
Inputs and Outputs
A variety of inputs and outputs are available on the Sample Sequencer.
Analog Inputs: Two analog inputs are located on the CPU board for reading a 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA
signal from two different analyzers. The Sequencer converts this signal into Engineering Units for
display and outputs the same signal on the Track and Hold board.
Analyzer Alarm Inputs: Two analyzer alarm inputs are located on the CPU board. These inputs are
used to indicate a loss of sample flow to the analyzer. An analyzer alarm will cause the analyzer
description to flash on the operation screen.
When the Sequencer is used in the Continuous mode, an analyzer alarm will immediately close the
active sample valve and open the next sample valve. That sample valve will remain open until the
analyzer alarm clears or one minute elapses. After one minute, the Sequencer will open the next
sample valve. The Sequencer will continue trying to establish flow every minute until the analyzer
alarm clears.
When the Sequencer is used in the Batch mode, an analyzer alarm will not immediately close the active
sample valve. Instead, when the analyzer alarm is received, the Sequencer will start a timeout timer. If
the Sequencer does not receive an End of Batch indication from the analyzer or the alarm does not
clear before that timeout timer, the Sequencer will close the current sample valve and open the next
valve in the sequence. If the End of Batch indication is received before the timeout timer, the
Sequencer assumes the alarm is not a loss of flow and continues with normal operation. The operator
can adjust the timeout timer by setting each sample’s Sample Timer.
Calibration Hold Inputs: Two calibration hold inputs are located on the CPU board. These inputs are
used to indicate the analyzer is performing a calibration. The calibration hold inputs do not perform a
function when the Sequencer is in the Batch mode.
In the Continuous mode, the Sequencer will wait at the active sample with the valve open when a
calibration indication is received. Once the calibration indication clears, the Sequencer will resume
operation entering the Flush state for the sample that was active before the calibration hold indication
was received.
End of Batch Inputs: Two End of Batch inputs are located on the CPU board. These inputs are used to
indicate when a batch type analyzer is finished taking a measurement. Without this input connected,
the Sequencer will never advance to the next sample when the Sequencer is in the Batch mode. The
End of Batch inputs are not used in the Continuous mode.
Valve Outputs: Eight valve outputs are located on the CPU board. These outputs supply 12 VDC to
operate the sample valves. The eight valves may be divided between two analyzers in any
combination. The only requirement is the valves assigned to an analyzer must be consecutive points in
the Sequencer.
Track and Hold Outputs: Eight individually isolated analog outputs are provided on the Track and Hold
board. These outputs are capable of 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA outputs. When a valid reading is taken from
the analyzer for a given sample, the Sequencer updates (“Tracks”) the corresponding signal on the
Track and Hold board. When the sample is not currently being analyzed, the Sequencer “Holds” the
corresponding signal on the Track and Hold board at its last known value.
Relay Outputs: A total of ten individually fused dry contacts are available on the Relay board. Two of
these outputs are used to replicate the two-analyzer alarm inputs while the remaining eight are used for

sample point indication. A closed contact indicates the point is currently being sampled and the
analyzer reading corresponds to that sample point.
MODBUS® Communications: The Sequencer is capable of connecting to an RS-485 network for
communicating to a PC or control system via MODBUS®. For more information on this feature, refer to
Appendix D.
Optional Manifold Sampling Valve
Although the Sample Sequencer may be used to control most manifold valve arrangements, the Sentry
Manifold Sample Valve offers a convenient optional accessory to obtain a representative sample. The
patented design incorporates block and bleed design and provides continuously flowing samples with
no areas for cross contamination to occur. The valve is available with a variety of DC and AC solenoid
coils and comes in either four or eight sample line models. Contact Sentry for more information about

DESCRIPTION
FUNCTION
MENU key
From the operation screen, pressing the MENU key will display the
main menu.
ENTER key
From the operation screen, pressing the ENTER key will toggle SEQ1
on and off.
While navigating through the menu screens, pressing the ENTER key
will select the option indicated by the cursor (►).
When editing sample names, timers and sequences, pressing the
ENTER key will select the next sample point to edit.
ESC key
From the operation screen, pressing the ESC key will toggle SEQ2 on
and off.
While in the menu screens, pressing the ESC key will exit the current
screen. Any changes are automatically saved.
Arrow keys
While navigating through the menu screens, use the arrows keys to
move the cursor to the option you want to choose.
While editing character fields and timers, use the arrow keys to move
between fields and to change the value in the current field.

Figure 6 shows a typical operation screen for the Sample Sequencer. The top two lines display the
status of Sequencer 1 running in the Continuous mode. The bottom two lines display the status of
Sequencer 2 running in the Batch mode.
Starting/Stopping Sequencers: Sequencers are started and stopped from the operation screen. To
toggle SEQ1 on and off, press the ENTER key. To toggle SEQ2 on and off, press the ESC key.
Analyzer Description (Continuous and Batch modes): This is a user definable field that describes the
analyzer being sequenced. The maximum number of characters is four. When an analyzer alarm is
received, this description will flash.
Open Sample Valve Number and Name (Continuous): This displays the valve number and the sample
description for the currently open valve.
Status (Continuous): This displays the state of the Sequencer, time remaining, and value. The three
available states are FLUSH and SAMPLE and OFF. The time displayed is the time remaining in the
current state. The value is only displayed when the Sequencer is in the SAMPLE state.
Open Sample Valve Name (Batch): This displays the sample description of the currently open valve.

Sample/Bypass
Sample streams may be temporarily skipped in the sequence by placing the sample point number in
Bypass. To place the point back in the sequence, place the sample point number in Sample. If the
Sample Sequencer is currently on a sample point that you place in Bypass, the Sample Sequencer will
immediately skip to the next point in the sequence. Occasionally, it is necessary to hold an analysis on
one sample point. To accomplish this, simply place all the undesired sample points in Bypass. Sample
points are placed in either Sample or Bypass by using the Sample/Bypass screen.

Figure 11 shows the Set Sequence screen. Each sequence contains 16 positions and are freely
editable. The only limitation is the highest point number that can be assigned to Sequencer 1 and the
lowest point number that can be assigned to Sequencer 2. For example, if valves 1 – 4 are assigned to
Sequencer 1, then 4 is the largest sample point number that can be assigned to Sequencer 1 and 5 is
the lowest point number that can be assigned to Sequencer 2. If Sequencer 2 is not displayed, then all
eight sample points are assigned to Sequencer 1. In order to set Sequencer 2, the valve assignment
must be changed in the Valve Assignment screen.
The flashing number indicates the current step in the sequence being edited. To change the number,
use the ▲ and ▼ keys. To move between steps in the sequence, use the ◄ and ► keys. Use the
ENTER key to toggle between Sequencer 1 and Sequencer 2. To exit this screen and return to the

Figure 12 shows the Timers screen. Each sample point has Sample and Flush timers that can be set
individually. In the Continuous mode, the Flush time is the amount of time the analyzer is flushed out
before the analyzer reading is considered valid. The Sample time is the amount of time the analyzer is
allowed to analyze the sample while the reading is considered valid. The Track and Hold value and
Point Identification are active during the Sample time. The valve for this sample point is open during
both the Sample time and the Flush time.
In the Batch mode, the Flush time is not used. The Sample time serves as a timeout timer that operates
only when the analyzer is in alarm. While in alarm, if an End-of-Batch signal is not received before the
Sample time times out, the Sample Sequencer will close the current sample point and proceed with the
next sample point. Since the Analyzer Alarm input may serve to indicate more than a loss of sample flow,
the Sample time should be set to give the analyzer sufficient time to attempt to complete an analysis and
output an End-of-Batch indication.

engineering units. To display engineering units, the scale should be set to the same range as the
analyzer.

a factor of 100 by holding the ENTER key while using the ▲ and ▼ keys. The units can be selected

Valve Assignment
The Sample Sequencer can sequence eight sample points to an analyzer. If all eight points are not
needed for one analyzer, the remaining sample points may be assigned to a second analyzer.
Assigning all eight points to SEQ1 will suppress information in other screens for SEQ2. The sample
points are assigned to a sequencer using the Valve Assignment screen.

Operating Modes
Continuous
This mode is for continuous output analyzers such as sodium, conductivity, pH, O2, some colorimetric, and
many others.
Timing Considerations for the Continuous Mode
Figure 26 illustrates the timing diagram for the continuous mode. The following considerations should be
made when determining the timing for your system.
Analyzer Alarm: An analyzer alarm will immediately close the active sample valve and open the
next sample valve. That sample valve will remain open until the analyzer alarm clears or one
minute elapses. After one minute, the Sequencer will open the next sample valve. The Sequencer
will continue trying to establish flow every minute until the analyzer alarm clears.
Calibration Hold: A calibration hold signal will cause the Sample Sequencer to wait at the active
sample with the valve open. Once the calibration indication clears, the Sequencer will resume
operation entering the Flush state for the sample that was active before the calibration hold
indication was received.
Flush Time: After switching to a successive stream, there will be a settling time for the analyzer to
stabilize to the new sample. The analyzer analog output signal is ignored during this time. The
necessary Flush time depends on the valve manifold design, sample line length from the manifold
arrangement, sample velocity and analyzer response time.
Sample Time: Sample Time is the time period during which a valid analyzer signal is read. Analog
outputs are updated and point identification relay contacts are closed during this time.
The
necessary Sample time should be set long enough to recognize stable readings and to provide
recording devices time to capture the data.

Batch
The batch mode is for analyzers that take a "bite" or batch of sample and then spend some time analyzing
it before outputting a new fixed analog signal. Typical types are reagent additive, chromatographs, etc.
When these analyzers have completed an analysis there is just one output value until the analyzer's next
cycle is completed. An "End-of-Batch" contact closure signal must be provided at the conclusion of a
batch by the batch type analyzers. The Hach Series 5000 analyzer operates in this manner.
See Appendix B for instructions about connecting a
Hach 5000 analyzer to the Sample Sequencer.
Timing Considerations for the Batch Mode
Figure 27 illustrates the timing diagram for the batch mode. Figure 9 demonstrates how each sample
stream is switched when the analyzer outputs an end-of-batch signal to the Sample Sequencer. If the
Sample Sequencer does not receive an end-of-batch signal, the Sample Sequencer will never
advance to the next sample. Upon receiving an end-of-batch signal from the analyzer, the Sample
Sequencer reads the analyzer value, updates the Track and Hold output, and closes the point
identification relay. Note: The updated Track and Hold output and point identification relay are
for the previous sample point. The open valve number will never match the closed relay point
identification in the batch mode.
The following considerations should be made when determining the timing for your batch mode
system:
End-of-Batch: The Sample Sequencer receives this signal when the analysis is completed
and the analyzer is ready to begin a new analysis.
Analyzer Alarm: The Sample Sequencer receives this signal when the analyzer is in alarm,
such as a loss of sample flow condition. Once the analyzer alarm signal is received the
Sample Sequencer will start the Sample timer and replicate the analyzer alarm for use by
external recorders and control systems.
Sample Time: The Sample time in the batch mode is a timeout timer that operates only when the
analyzer is in alarm. While in alarm, if an End-of-Batch signal is not received before the Sample
time times out, the Sample Sequencer will close the current sample point and proceed with the
next sample point. Since the Analyzer Alarm input may serve to indicate more than a loss of
sample flow, the Sample time should be set to give the analyzer sufficient time to attempt to
complete an analysis and output an End-of-Batch indication.

Valve Outputs
The Sample Sequencer switches sample streams to an analyzer using the valve outputs on the CPU
board. These outputs provide 12 VDC to control solenoid valves. Sentry offers a manifold sample
valve for use with the Sample Sequencer. With additional hardware, other solenoid valve operating
voltages may be used.

Unpacking
After carefully removing the Sample Sequencer from its shipping carton, inspect it for any damage.
Report damages to the shipper at once.
Mounting
It is recommended the Sample Sequencer be mounted close to the analyzer to permit viewing of both
devices at the same time. This allows the operator to control the Sample Sequencer while viewing the
analyzer.
The Sample Sequencer can mount easily to a panel, wall or pole. When mounting the Sequencer to a
pole, the pole must have an outside diameter of ¾ to 1 ½ inches (19 to 38 mm). All mounting methods
must be capable of supporting at least 24 pounds (10.9 kg).

Pole Mounting
1. Obtain two U-bolts and nuts sized for the pole used for installation.
2. Press the back of the mounting brackets against a pole in the proper mounting position, either
vertically or horizontally.
3. Place the curve of one U-bolt behind the pole, and insert the threaded ends of the bolt through
two of the center holes on the mounting bracket. Refer to Figure 29.
4. Secure the two nuts with a wrench, and repeat steps 1-3 on the opposite end of the bracket.

Wall Mounting
1. Remove the mounting bracket from the back of the Sample Sequencer.
2. Use the bracket as a template or use the dimension information shown in Figure 31 to mark
positions on the wall for four of the eight screw holes – either the vertical or horizontal pair.
Position the device such that a minimum of two (2) mounting screws mount to a stud.
3. Reconnect the mounting bracket to the device.
4. Drill pilot holes in the marked positions for four ¼ -inch (M6) screws.
5. Use four ¼-inch (M6), hex-head or pan-head screws to secure the bracket and device to the
wall.

Panel Mount
1. Turn off all power to the Sample Sequencer and disconnect all cables if necessary.
2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the mounting bracket onto the
back of the device. The mounting bracket is not needed for panel mounting.
3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screws of the enclosure lid.
4. Lift the lid off the device and set it aside. Or, store it by screwing the right side of the lid to the
left side of the back enclosure.
5. Use a punch and hammer to remove the three knockouts on the inside rim of the back
enclosure. Position the punch in the center of the knockout for best results.
6. Measure the panel hole using the dimension information given in Figure 32. Mark the panel for
placement of three #10 (M4) pan-head screws.
7. Cut out the panel hole and drill three pilot holes for the screws.
8. Fit the Sample Sequencer into the panel hole and secure it with three #10 (M4) pan-head
screws.
9. Make all wiring connections as described in the following sections.
10. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the lid and tighten the screws (10 in-lb, 1.13 N m
maximum). Do not over tighten the screws.

Electrical Connections
Electrical Shock Hazard – All input and output wiring should be installed in such a manner
that access to bare copper is prohibited during normal operation.

Access holes sized for ½” NPT (15 mm) and ¾” NPT (20 mm) electrical conduit fittings are provided
on the bottom of the enclosure. Sealing type conduit fittings are required to maintain the enclosure’s
rating.
Relay Board Connections
The Sample Sequencer contains three circuit boards stacked in the enclosure. The relay board is
located at the bottom of this circuit board stack. Located on the Relay board are the connections for
point identification contacts, replicated alarm contacts, and the power supply.
Power Connection
The Sample Sequencer contains a universal power supply. The power supply is capable of accepting
an input voltage range of 100-240 VAC and frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. The Sequencer will
automatically operate with power supplied in this range. A power supply lead of 16 AWG (1.3 mm2)
copper wire is recommended.
It is recommended the Sequencer be connected to an electrical outlet or outlet strip with surge
suppression and filtering. A suitable external over-current protection device such as a fuse or circuit
breaker (15 A) is recommended for both the hot (L) and neutral (N) leads. Using this method, the plug
will serve as the disconnect device. The cord and plug shall comply with the following standards:

If desired, the Sample Sequencer may also be hard wired to instrument-quality power using
appropriate certified conduit, fittings, and wiring. A suitable external over-current protection device,
such as a fuse or circuit breaker (15 A), and disconnect device is recommended. The over-current
protection and disconnect devices shall be installed on both the hot (L) and neutral (N) leads. The
disconnect device shall be located near the equipment and marked with appropriate ON(1) OFF(O)
markings as specified by local codes. For fixed wiring methods, the ground conductor shall have green
with a yellow stripe as the insulation. Installation should be performed by qualified personal in
accordance with local codes and procedures.

Point Identification and Alarm Connections
The Sample Sequencer provides individually fused dry contacts to indicate the current active channel.
These connections may be used with a recorder or in situations where analog I/O at the receiving
device is limited. In addition to these point identification contacts, replicated analyzer alarms are also
located on the Relay board. Figures 34 and 39 show typical connections to the Relay board.

The Track and Hold board provides individually isolated 0/4 – 20 mA signals to recorders or other data

CPU Board Connections
The CPU board is the top board in the Sample Sequencer enclosure. Multiple functions are contained
on the CPU board. Figure 36 shows the CPU board.
Valve Output Connections
The valve outputs of the Sample Sequencer output 12 VDC, intended for use with the Sentry Manifold
Sample Valve. Other manifold valves may be used, however additional hardware such as interposing
relays may be required. Typical valve connections are shown in Figure 38.
Analog Input Connections
Connect the analog signal from each analyzer to the analog inputs at connector TB1. Terminals
marked 1 are used for analyzer 1. Terminals marked 2 are used for analyzer 2. When using the
Sequencer with only 1 analyzer, connect the analog signal from the analyzer to terminals 1. Typical
analog input connections are shown in Figure 37.
Analyzer Alarm Connections
Analyzer alarm signals are connected at TB2. Terminals marked A1 are used for analyzer 1.

Starting Up The Sample Sequencer
1. Ensure the Sample Sequencer is securely mounted.
2. Wire the Sample Sequencer to the analyzer, sample valves, and other devices as described
in the Installation section of this manual.
3. Apply power.
4. Setup the Sample Sequencer required for your application. This includes setting the sample
timers, operating mode, analog input ranges, and custom sequence. Refer to the Quick Start
Guide and Operation sections of this manual.

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning
The Sample Sequencer is constructed of rugged materials that do not require cleaning. If cleaning
the external surfaces is desired, a soft cloth and water is recommended.
Rechargeable Battery
The CPU board contains a rechargeable lithium ion battery. This battery is not intended for field
replacement. Contact the factory for additional information regarding replacing this battery or
proper disposal of a CPU board containing the lithium ion battery.
Fuses
Potential Fire Hazard – Replace fuses only with the same fuse type and ratings.

Every circuit board in the Sample Sequencer contains re-settable fuses to protect personnel, wiring
and the electronics from excessive current draw. The procedure for resetting one of these fuses after
an overload condition occurs is to remove power and allow the device to cool down.
The dry contacts use a replaceable 2 A fast acting fuse rated for 250 V. These fuses are located on
the relay board.
The power supply uses a 4 A fast acting fuse rated for 250 V.
Replacement fuses for the power supply and dry contacts are available from Sentry. Refer to the
Spare Parts List of this manual for further information. Refer to the Disassembly procedure for
instructions on replacing user replaceable parts such as fuses.

Disassembly
Electrical Shock Hazard – Disconnect all power, including voltages connected to relays,
before servicing or replacing fuses.

Use the following steps to replace any user serviceable parts:
1. Remove the front cover of the enclosure by removing the four corner screws. Disconnect the
keypad extension cable from the CPU board.
2. Disconnect the interface cable and power supply cable from the CPU board. Remove the
CPU board by removing the four mounting screws.
3. Disconnect the interface cable and power supply cable from the Track and Hold board.
Remove the Track and Hold board by removing the four standoffs located on the board.
4. Replace desire part, such as fuse, circuit board or cable assembly.
5. Replace the Track and Hold board. Secure the board in place using the four standoffs
removed in step 3. Replace the interface cable and power supply cable.
6. Replace the CPU board. Secure the board in place using the four screws removed in step 2.
Replace the interface cable and power supply cable.
7. Replace the front cover. Attached the keypad extension cable to the CPU board. Secure the
front cover in place using the four screws located on the corners of the front cover.
Calibration
Note: The analog circuitry of the Sample Sequencer is calibrated at Sentry prior to shipment.
Re-calibration should be performed by properly trained personnel. Refer to the following procedures
to calibrate the analog circuits of the Sample Sequencer:
Analog Input Calibration
Tools Required: Calibrated milliamp supply.
1. Using the methods discussed in the Operation section of this manual, navigate to the Input Cal
Screen.
2. Remove the existing analog input wires and connect a calibrated milliamp supply to TB1
terminals marked Analog Input 1 of the CPU board.
3. Input 0/4 mA (whichever is desired) on TB1 terminals marked Analog Input 1 of the CPU
board.
4. Use the ▲ and ▼ arrows to change the OFFSET value until RAW COUNT reads between 0
and 500. Note: Raw count should not read 0. When calibrating to 4mA, typical Offset values
range between 1000000 and 1400000.
5. Press the ENTER key.
6. Input 20 mA on TB1 terminals marked Analog Input 1 of the CPU board.
7. Use the ▲ and ▼ arrows to change the GAIN value until RAW COUNT reads between
16776000 and 16777215. Note: Raw count should not read 16777215. When calibrating to
20mA, typical Gain values range between 6500000 and 7500000.
8. Press the ENTER key.
9. Repeat steps 2-7 using channel Analog Input 2 to calibrate channel 2.

Tools Required: Calibrated multimeter with milliamp measurement capability.
1. Using the methods discussed in the Operation section of this manual, navigate to the Output
Cal Screen.
2. Connect a calibrated multimeter to the + and – terminals of the desired channel on the Track
and Hold board.
3. Use the ▲ and ▼ arrows to select a channel to calibrate. Press the ENTER key to calibrate
the selected channel.
4. Use the ▲ and ▼ arrows to change the OFFSET value until the multimeter reads 4.00 mA (or
0.00 mA) ± 0.01 mA.
5. Press the ENTER key.
6. Use the ▲ and ▼ arrows to change the GAIN value until the multimeter reads 20.00 mA ±
0.01 mA.
7. Press the ENTER key to return to the Channel Selection Screen.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 to calibrate the remaining channels.
9. Press the ESC key to return to the previous screen.

Warranty
WARRANTY
Seller warrants products manufactured by it and supplied hereunder to be free from defects in
materials and workmanship for a period of twelve months from date of shipment. If within such period
any such products shall be proved to Seller’s satisfaction to be defective, such products shall be
repaired or replaced at Seller’s option. Seller’s obligation and Buyer’s exclusive remedy hereunder
shall be limited to such repair and replacement and shall be conditioned upon Seller’s receiving
written notice of any alleged defect within 10 days after its discovery and, at Seller’s option, return of
such product to Seller, ex-works Sentry’s factory.
The foregoing warranties are exclusive and in lieu of all other express and implied warranties except in
title, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for purpose. Seller shall
not be subject to any other obligations or liabilities whatsoever with respect to products manufactured or
furnished by it, or any undertakings, acts or omissions relating thereto.
Warranty Conditions & Limitations
This Warranty shall not apply to any Sentry product which, in the opinion of Sentry Equipment Corp,
has been (a) altered or repaired in a manner affecting the efficiency of performance of the unit or (b)
incorrectly installed or operated or (c) damaged in shipment or (d) damaged by flood or fire or (e) if
the serial number is missing, altered or defaced.
The owner shall be responsible for maintenance of his equipment. Wear or damage caused by lack
of normal maintenance or by misuse of the equipment shall not be considered as defective
workmanship and material.
Sentry reserves the right to make product design changes or improvements without notice and
without imposing any obligation upon itself to install these changes or improvements on its products
previously manufactured.
This warranty is for the sole benefit of the original purchaser and is not transferable unless agreed to
in writing by Sentry Equipment Corp.
Receiving Shipments (including loss or damage by transportation)
It is the customer’s responsibility to check for missing cartons and sign of damage to cartons. If
found, customer should note missing and/or damaged cartons on the delivery receipt and have
delivery receipt signed by the representative of the transportation company. If unpacking discloses

Warranty
1. Contact the Customer Service Department, Sentry Equipment Corp., Oconomowoc, WI,
Telephone: 262-567-7256, to obtain a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number.
2. You will be sent an “RMA” and a “Decontamination Statement” that is required to be filled
out and returned with the equipment.
3. The following information must appear on the outside of the package:
a.
RMA number marked on outside of box.
b.
Decontamination Statement filled out and attached to outside of box.
4. Return defective equipment FREIGHT PREPAID. Collect shipments will be refused.
5. The factory will not process warranty claims until the customer has properly accomplished
the above items.
6. The Sentry factory may accept the entire claim, a part of the claim or none of the claim if
our inspection of returned parts proves the failure was for reasons other than defective
material or factory workmanship.
Important Notes:
1. Sentry will not be responsible for damage incurred during the return shipment.
2. All returns subject to inspection and a $50.00 evaluation fee.
3. This RMA is not authorization for credit. Credits and/or replacements will be issued upon

APPENDIX A - RECOMMENDED PIPING
It is recommended proper sample conditioning and flow control be maintained to obtain representative
samples. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) guidelines for representative sampling
recommend maintaining constant and continuous sample flow in sample lines. In addition, it is
recommended the sample be cooled to a temperature of 77 F (25 C) prior to analysis. (Note: Some
analyzers may recommend a different sample temperature be used to accelerate the analysis
process.) Appropriate sample coolers or heaters may be required. Consult the pressure and
temperature specifications for your specific analyzer and sampling system. Figure 40 shows the
recommended sample conditioning piping and instrumentation diagram (P & ID) when switching
streams with the Sample Sequencer.

APPENDIX B – USING A SEQUENCER WITH HACH SERIES
5000 ANALYZER
The Sample Sequencer may operate with a Hach Series 5000 analyzer. The Series 5000 instruments
operate in batch-mode style and require the appropriate configuration for use with the Sample
Sequencer. Hach 5000 analyzers have special features that provide a contact closure at the end of
the batch. This is called the “Mark End of Measurement” contact closure. The contact closure causes
the Sample Sequencer to advance to the next sample point. See Batch Mode operation description in
this manual for more information.
Figure 41 illustrates how to connect the Sample Sequencer to a Hach Series 5000 analyzer. The
Hach 5000 analyzer must be configured properly to operate with the Sample Sequencer. The
analyzer must be programmed to use relay #3 and relay #4 for System Alarm and End-ofMeasurement contact closure indications, respectively. Consult the Hach analyzer manual for
information about configuring the System Alarm to relay 3. The following procedure describes how to
configure the End-of-Measurement contact closure on the Hach 5000.
Configuring the Series 5000 (Catalog No. 60000-XX through 60004-XX) for MARK END OF
MEASURE on Relay 4
1. Remove the front cover of the control module. Move the No. 1 DIP switch on SW1 to the ON
position. This will enable the Extended Diagnostic menu. (Switch SW1 is an 8-switch DIP
located near the center of the circuit board.)
2. Return to the front of the control panel and press the TEST key. Using the NEXT key, scroll
through the diagnostic menu to MARK END OF MEAS. Press ENTER and select ENABLE
with the NEXT key. Then, press ENTER. This will activate the MARK END OF MEASURE
contact closure.
3. Turn OFF switch No. 1 on switch bank SW1 of the circuit board. This will return the analyzer
to normal operation but leave the MARK END OF MEASURE function enabled. Note: This
procedure will have to be repeated if a cold start is performed.
4. Reassign the System Alarm to relay 3 by the following: Press the SET UP key. ALARMS will
appear. Press ENTER. Scroll with the NEXT key to RELAY CONFIG and press ENTER.
Scroll to SYS ALRM with the NEXT key and then press ENTER. Scroll with the NEXT key to
RLY 3 and press ENTER.
5. Reassign Alarm 2 to No Relay by the following: Press the SETUP key on the control module.
ALARMS will appear. Press ENTER. Scroll with the NEXT key to RELAY CONFIG and press
ENTER. Scroll to ALARM2 and press ENTER. Scroll with the NEXT key to NO RLY and
press ENTER.
6. Assign relay 4 to Mark End of Measure by the following: Press the SETUP key on the control
module. ALARMS will appear. Press ENTER. Scroll with the NEXT key to RELAY CONFIG
and press ENTER. Scroll to MARK END OF MEAS and press ENTER. Note: MARK END
OF MEAS will not appear unless it has been properly activated per the above steps.
Scroll with the NEXT key to RLY 4 and press ENTER. This will assign the alarm 4 relay to
mark the end of measurement with a contact closure. The contact closure makes the Sample
Sequencer advance to the next sample point.

7. Verify the Sequencer is operating in the batch mode.
Older Hach Series 5000 Analyzers
If you have an analyzer with a catalog model number 5000X-XX, contact Hach Service Department at
1-800-227-4224 regarding using the Sample Sequencer with your analyzer. Updated software
EEPROM may be required to operate correctly with the Sample Sequencer.
If you have an analyzer with a catalog model number 5500X-XX, configure your unit as follows:
Model 5500X-XX Configuration
1. The wiring is different for the model 5500X-XX than shown in Figure C1. The changes are: (a)
Connect the Sample Sequencer End-of-Batch terminals to the Hach terminals labeled NO and
COM on ALRM 2. (b) Connect the Sample Sequencer Analyzer Alarm terminals to the Hach
terminals labeled NO and COM on SYS ALRM.
2. Open the control module door and loosen the screw to allow access to the rear of the display
board. Remove the back cover.
3. Turn DIP switch #1 (S1) ON by pressing it. This puts the analyzer in the Extended Diagnostic
menu.
4. Press the TEST key.
5. Using the NEXT key, scroll through the diagnostic menu to "MARK END of MEAS", then,
press ENTER. This will cause the number 2 alarm contact to close at the end of each analysis
cycle. The Series 5000 now provides a contact closure to advance the Sample Sequencer to
the next sample point each time alarm 2 contact closes. The alarm 2 contact can no longer be
used for an alarm signal.
6. After pressing ENTER, return the #1 DIP switch (S1) to the OFF position. Replace the cover
and close the meter panel. This returns the analyzer to normal operation. Note: If a "cold
start" is initiated or the backup battery fails during a power failure, you must reset the
MARK END of MEAS as outlined above.
7. Verify the Sequencer is operating in the batch mode.

half duplex (2-wire), RS-485 network.

Each device on the network must be assigned a unique address. The address for each
Sequencer can be in the range of 1 to 247. Use the ▲ and ▼ keys to change the address
setting. To change the address setting in multiples of 25, hold the MENU key while using
the ▲ and ▼ keys. Use the ENTER key to toggle between the address setting and the
BAUD setting.
The Sequencer is capable of operating using a BAUD rate of 19.2 kbps or 9600 bps. To
change the BAUD rate use the ▲ and ▼ keys.
The communications port uses 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity. The MODBUS® mode
is RTU. These parameters cannot be changed.
The complete listing of MODBUS® registers are listed in Table 4.
