Fotografska razstava na temo Portret 2010 je pod pokroviteljstvom
Mednarodne zveze za fotografsko umetnost FIAP sledila pravilom in
protokolu, veljavnim na vseh njihovih žiriranih razstavah po svetu.
Na letošnjem natečaju je sodelovalo 350 avtorjev iz 39 držav s 1369
fotografijami v predpisani črno-beli tehniki in velikosti 30 x 20 cm.
Tričlanska žirija fotografov – Manfred Taschwer, član EVÖAV (Avstrija),
Herman Čater in Janez Korošin, oba EFIAP in Mojstra fotografije Fotografske zveze Slovenije – je izmed vseh del na razstavo uvrstila 179
fotografij ter podelila tri nagrade in šest diplom. Glede izbora nagrajenih posnetkov se je komisija odločila za portret »en face« oziroma
tričetrtinski portret in tudi za ikonografsko zahtevnejše prizore, na
primer z diplomo nagrajeni Leonid Goldin (Izrael) s pomenljivim motivom starejše ženske ob oknu propadajoče hiše in Hoang Quoc Tvan
(Vietnam) s fotografijo portretirank v ljubeznivem sožitju mladosti in
starosti. Žirija je diplomo podelila tudi učinkovito kadrirani fotografiji
deklice Blagoja Jankoskega.
Pri ocenjevanju kvalitete posnetkov se je komisija osredotočila
na portretirance, ki jih ustvarjalci niso posneli v izrazitejših čustvenih
razpoloženjih ali pri opravljanju del, kot je le dokumentiranje nekega
poklica ali opravila, čeprav so tovrstni uspešnejši posnetki uvrščeni na razstavo in predstavljeni v katalogu. Med nagrajenimi deli ni
kvalitetnejših portretov iz profila in tudi ne portretov-aktov, saj je na
fotografijah slednjih poudarek na telesu izrazitejši kot na obrazih. Pri
nagrajenih posnetkih gre namreč predvsem za portretno fotografijo, modeli pa delujejo naravno in ne dajejo očitnega vtisa, da gre za
poziranje fotografu oziroma za pozicioniranje osebe, kot jo poznamo
iz fotografij za dokumente. Na razstavi sicer opazimo tovrstne fotografije, vendar med nagrajenci ni čutiti inscenacij modelov v različne
nenavadne, čudne in neobičajne okoliščine, ki so na prispelih fotografijah tovrstnega tipa žal v večini primerov preglasile portretiranca
samega in ga le dokumentirale v slikovitosti kurioznega ambienta.
V teh primerih pogrešamo likovno nadgradnjo motiva, saj ostaja ta
na tej ravni le opisna in ilustrativna. Pomemben je seveda celosten
vtis oziroma razmerje med posameznimi elementi, kjer je tehnično
obvladovanje fotografskega metjeja le osnova, na kateri se gradijo
in razvijajo številni likovni, ikonografski ter avtorski elementi. Ob tem
je seveda umirjen, neafektiran, sugestiven, a sublimen izraz portretirancev ključen. Prav tako tudi osvetlitev s svojo prefinjeno paleto
The photographic exhibition Portrait 2010, under the patronage of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), was held in accordance
with the rules and protocols valid for juried exhibitions all over the world.
This year’s competition attracted 350 authors from 39 countries with a
total of 1369 submitted photographs, all of them in black and white, as
prescribed, in 30 by 20 cm (12” by 8”) format. The jury consisted of three
photographers: Manfred Taschwer, a member of the EVÖAV (Austria), and
Herman Čater and Janez Korošin, both EFIAP and Photography Masters
of the Photographic Association of Slovenia. From all the works submitted, the jury selected 179 photographs for the exhibition and bestowed
three awards and six certificates. For the awards, the jury decided on the
en face three-quarter portrait, and iconographically more demanding
scenes, such as the work of certificate recipient Leonid Goldin (Israel), with
the meaningful motif of an elderly woman at the window of a decrepit
house, and Hoang Quoc Tvan (Vietnam) with a picture of the portrait subjects in a loving coexistence of youth and old age. A certificate was also
awarded to the effectively framed photo of a girl by Blagoja Jankoski.
In judging the quality of the portraits, the jury focused on the subjects captured by the artists not in states of clear emotional affect or at
work, as this would reduce the images to merely documenting a job,
although some such shots were included in the exhibition and presented in the catalogue. The awarded works also do not include any
high-quality profile portraits, nor are there any nude portraits, as the
body rather than the face then seems to dominate. The award winners
are primarily portrait photographs, with the subjects appearing naturally rather than in deliberate poses, as is the case with documentary
photographs, for example. While there are such works, however, the
award winners avoided placing the subjects in various odd or unusual
circumstances, which in this type of photography unfortunately often
overrule the subjects, reducing them to just another fixture in a curious scene. In these cases, we do wish that the motive had a stronger
graphic component, as at this level it is merely descriptive and illustrative. Of particular importance is the whole impression conveyed
by the image, or rather the relationships between various elements,
where the mastery of the photographic metier is merely the base on
which several graphic, iconographic and authorial elements are built.
With all this, however, the tranquil, unaffected, suggestive but subtle
expression of the models is crucial. The same goes for lighting, with its
nians med črnim in belim; med sivinami, pomenljivo črnino in njej
kontrastno belino.
Medtem ko se z diplomo nagrajeni ženski portret Nikolaia Miniuca (Moldavija) poigrava s sivinami črno-belega, pa obenem s fineso
predstavlja tudi plemenitost teksturnih ter strukturnih kvalitet prosojnih in svilenih tkanin njegovega modela. V izrazito sivih odtenkih
je posnet tudi tretjenagrajeni, v prvi plan približani zumirani portret
Pentti Pitkälahti (Finska), s poudarjenim grafizmom gub in kože obraza starejšega moža. Izostren in kontrasten je dopasni portret Željka
Škrbića (Srbija), »potopljen« v obsežno črnino ozadja, iz katerega izstopajo le svetli akcenti (obraz, brada, obleka). Kontrastna občutja,
s katerimi nas navdaja posnetek, pa posredujejo gledalcu tudi simboliko, katere sporočilo bi lahko iskali tudi v portretirančevi naravi,
fotografovem odnosu do modela ... Tudi posnetek Shirish S. Jhaveri
(Indija) premore veliko črnine, a v primerjavi s prejšnjo fotografijo ta
učinkuje mehko, ponekod tudi hoteno neostro, da fin in megličast
sfumato lahkotno prši in prehaja z modela v ozadje (oba posnetka
sta nagrajena z diplomo). Portret drugonagrajenega Ahmeda Alkindi
(Oman) združuje v sebi tako uravnotežena razmerja med ostrino in
mehkobo kot tudi med črninami, sivinami in belino. Kot bi se ta dejstva navezovala tudi na portretiranca, na njegov deški, pa vendar že
najstniški čas! Da se je v tem obdobju treba soočiti že z marsikaterim
življenjskim dejstvom, nam razkriva morda prav njegov »odrasli pogled« sicer še vedno igrivega fantovskega obdobja.
Prvonagrajeni Adam Scathmary-Kiraly (Madžarska) je prepričal žirijo s svojo duhovno izraznostjo, a izčiščeno ter povsem preprosto
in klasično portretno postavitvijo. Prefinjeni odtenki med temnim
in svetlim, med ostrino fizične upodobitve ter mehkobo in milino
portretirančevega izraza, poudarjajo lepoto njegove »notranjosti«,
ki je avratično zaobjela celotno zunanjo pojavnost modela. Čeprav
ljubkost otrok, mladih in lepih ženskih ter moških obrazov in njihovih teles svet še vedno fascinira sama po sebi, pa umetnost prisega
na lepoto naravnosti, dobrih in plemenitih misli, zrelih razmišljanj ter
čustvovanj, ki sevajo iz človekove notranjosti navzven. Kot vemo, je
tovrstna lepota večna in poleg tega tudi stalno dana vsakomur na
razpolago. Kateri izmed njiju in v kolikšni meri dajemo prednost pri
portretiranju in tudi drugače, pa ostaja prepuščeno občutkom, naši
svobodni volji in odločitvam.

A portrait of a woman by Nikolai Miniuca (Moldavia), which plays
with greys in the context of black and white technique while at the
same time presenting with a certain finesse the preciousness of the
textural and structural qualities of the silken fabrics in which the model
was draped, was awarded a certificate. Third place went to a portrait
of an elderly man, using decidedly gray tones; the close up, zoomed
portrait was taken by Pentti Pitkälahti (Finland), with accented graphism
of wrinkles and facial skin. The waist-up portrait taken by Željko Škrbić
(Serbia), was sharp and contrasty, floating on the vast blackness of the
background, showing only the bright accent of the face, beard and
clothing. Contrasting feelings inspired by the shot transmit a certain
symbolism to the viewer, the message of which can be found in the
subject’s character and the photographer’s relationship to the model.
The shot by Shirish S. Jhaveri (India) is also steeped in black, however in
contrast to the above photograph, it is soft, sometimes intentionally
blurred, while the fine and misty sfumato sprays gently, transitioning
from the subject to the background. Both shots were awarded certificates. The second-place portrait by Ahmed Alkinidi (Oman) balances
sharpness and softness as well as blacks, greys and whites, as if these
were connected to the subject and his boyish, yet also already adolescent life. The fact that this age requires confrontation with many facts
of life is revealed by his adult look in the still playful boyish period.
The winner of the first prize, Adam Scathmary-Kiraly (Hungary),
convinced the jury with his spiritual expression, while employing refined yet very simple and classical portrait framing. The fine gradations
between dark and bright, the sharpness of the image and the softness and grace of the subject’s face serve to accent the subject’s inner
beauty, encompassing in an auratic fashion the whole external appearance of the model. Even though the loveliness of children, young
and beautiful women, and male faces and their bodies fascinates the
world on its own, the artist seeks the beauty of natural appearance,
good and noble thoughts, mature deliberations and feelings which
radiate from the inside out. We all know that such beauty is eternal
and available to anyone. As to which of these is preferred when taking
portraits and to what extent, that is a choice to be made by each of us,
with our feelings, our free will and our own decisions.
