Dear children
You ask adults a lot of questions,
right? I’m sure you do! After all,
you’re naturally curious. Asking
questions is very important, not
only for children, but for everyone.
Curiosity allows you to learn about
the world you live in, advances your
growth and self confidence, and creates
a wonderful opportunity to strengthen
the connection with your parents and
other adults.
But sometimes adults don’t have
the answers either, so it’s good to
know that answers are also to be
found in the arts - poetry, stories,
paintings and movies. I’m delighted
by the marvelous opportunity the Tel
Aviv International Children’s Film

Festival affords you, your parents,
indeed the whole family, or perhaps
just you and your friends to watch
movies about and for children whose
subject matter is all children’s
concern: aspirations, dreams, loves,
fears, disappointments and so on.
I’m certain these movies will not
only delight and entertain you, but
also enrich you, stimulate your
own curiosity and arouse your own
thoughts and yet more questions,
perhaps even family discussions on
the films various themes.

Festival & Cinematheque Chairperson
To our young audience of movie fans,
We are at the entrance to the 11th
International Film Festival for
Children and Youth; a festival that
has for 11 years provided quality
cinema to thousands of youngsters
and those who come with them.
As before, we’ve assembled the best
of the recent crop of films and you’ll
be able to watch them in all of the
Cinematheque’s theaters. As well as
a rich variety of movies, there’ll be
workshops and seminars conducted
by professionals from here and
abroad. One of our most important
tasks is to enable a dialogue that
will promote local filmmaking for
young audiences that, to date, has not
received sufficient attention. That is
why we are seeking means whereby to
encourage their production.
As always we made a mighty effort
to do our very best, aided by the
Cinematheque team headed by CEO
Alon Garbuz, artistic director Michal
Matus, and festival producer Galit
Barsky. Our PR people worked hand in
hand with them, as did the graphic
artists, translators, projectionists
and so on. And it all works, thanks

to the support of Tel Aviv mayor
Ron Huldai, and those heading the
department of culture and events,
Iris Mor and Shabi Mizrachi. Special
thanks to the Film Council headed by
Prof. David Alexander and Eti Cohen.
And I must say a farewell thank you
to the outgoing Minister of Culture
and Sport, Limor Livnat, who helped us
bring the festival to outlying areas,
such as the Sderot Cinematheque and
the Netivot Community Center.
Thanks to our Friends Association
headed by R. Yichiel Eckstein, every
year we can bring scores of kids from
all over the country to enjoy movies
at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. And
thanks to you, dear audience, for your
continued loyalty to the festival

Dear audience,
This year’s program is particularly
rich and has a fascinating one-time
variety of movies for youth, children
and even tots.
The international competition for
the best among prize-winning films
collected from all over the world
forms the center of the festival. An
international jury, together with
a specially instructed-for-theevent jury of children, will judge
the competition.
This year, thanks to the
Goethe Institut and SCHLINGEL
International Film Festival, we
are hosting ‘Focus on Germany’ with
contemporary German films that were
hits in their own country. We will
premiere the winners of the Crystal
Bear 2015 from the prestigious
Berlin Film Festival, and we’ll host
a delegation of German filmmakers
who will participate in a special
initiative to promote a professional

dialogue with local filmmakers.
In collaboration with the Israel
Film fund and the Scriptwriters
Guild of Israel, we’ve initiated
an international project, the first
of its kind that seeks to promote
artistic film endeavor in Israel.
A special production grant will be
awarded with the aim of maintaining
and furthering the premieres of
Israeli films for Children.

‫‪Scheinmann made his debut feature‬‬
‫‪The West Wittering Affair in 2006.‬‬

‫‪in 2014 and won the young Jury‬‬
‫‪award at the Tel Aviv International‬‬

‫‪a member of several international‬‬

‫שחקנית ישראלית‪,‬‬
‫בוגרת הסטודיו למשחק‬
‫ניסן נתיב‪ ,‬התחילה את‬
‫הקריירה הקולנועית‬
‫בגיל ‪ 11‬כששיחקה‬
‫בסרט "קלרה הקדושה"‬
‫(‪ .)1996‬על תפקידה‬
‫בסרט זכתה בפרס אופיר בקטגוריית "השחקנית‬
‫הראשית הטובה ביותר"‪ ,‬והייתה לשחקנית‬
‫הצעירה ביותר שזכתה בפרס זה‪ .‬מאז ועד היום‬
‫השתתפה דובינצ׳יק בעשרות סרטים והפקות‬
‫דרמה‪ .‬היא משחקת בתיאטרון הגשר כבר ‪ 8‬שנים‪,‬‬

‫‪Lucy Dubinchik | Israeli actress,‬‬
‫‪graduate of Nissan Nativ Acting‬‬
‫‪Studio. Began her movie career at the‬‬
‫‪age of 11 with the title role in “Holy‬‬
‫‪Clara” (1999) for which she won Best‬‬
‫‪Actress at the Ofir Awards (Israeli‬‬
‫‪Academy Awards), the youngest actress‬‬
‫‪ever to win the prize. From that time‬‬
‫‪to the present, Dubinchik has worked‬‬
‫‪regularly on stage, in film and TV,‬‬
‫‪and is considered one of the most‬‬
‫‪prominent in the industry.‬‬

Veit Helmer | Writer-directorproducer - lives in Berlin.
Participated at several MEDIA
supported training programmes
and holds lectures at film schools
around the world. In August 2002 He
became member of the European Film
Academy. Helmer will be a guest of
this year’s festival with his latest
film ‘Fiddlesticks’ for tiny tots.

Gritt Langer | Represents the
SCHLINGEL International Film
Festival for Children and Young
Audience. She is responsible for
the festival’s partnerships with
local schools and coordinates the
organisation’s film literacy projects
during the festival and throughout
the year. Langer is further involved
in SCHLINGEL’s international
activities and represents the
festival at matinee events.

guest of honor | Noriko Shiraishi
“Noriko San - the girl from Japan”
She was born in Tokyo in 1950, and
at the age of five and a half was
photographed by Anna Riwkin Brick
for a children’s photo book published
in Sweden (1956). The book became a
bestseller in Israel and ‘Norikosan’ became a famous character. She
studied biology, married and has two
adult children and a cute dog, and is
on the board of a family company. She
still lives in Tokyo and this is her
first visit to Israel. Noriko will
participate at a special event in
which we’ll screen Dvorit Shargal’s
fascinating documentary “Where
is Elle-Kari and what happened to
Noriko-san?”

stipend for young producers and won
the VGH-Award for Best New Producer

festivals. As for today, Reschke writes
scripts for TV-movies and series as
well as feature films - animation and
live action, and books for children.

diplomatic relationship between
Israel and Germany, the Festival
has chosen to spotlight the German
children’s film industry with the
Israeli premiere of four recent films,
all of which enjoyed success in their
own country. Two of the films are for
toddlers and will incorporate live
dubbing during screening. Additionally
a professional delegation of children’s
film experts will visit, comprising a
director, screenwriter, producer and
festival manager. They will be part of
the professional program for locals,
and will take an active role in the
public screenings. This collaboration
and the special program were made
possible by the Goethe Institut and
Schlingel Festival.

“Life as a Movie” is a joint project
of the Children’s Channel on “Yes”
Satellite Television, The Ministry
of Education and Lahav Nonprofit
Association for the promotion of
social values. The project is based
on an innovative method of working
with children, one which reflects
Israel’s multiculturalism. Children
from different groups across the
country worked together with a drama
instructor and a film director from
the Lahav Association. Through
dramatic exercises and improvisations
the children convey personal issues
such as identity and belonging,
cultural and economical divergence,
violence and tolerance - that form
the basis for creating short drama
films. The children undertake various
production and acting roles during
the filmmaking, which culminates
in the creation of films portraying
other realities, ones that exists on
the margins, sometimes sad, sometimes
happy, but always genuine and moving.

Smart Stage for
movies and animation

Smart Stage program for creating
movies and animation has been ongoing
for three years in collaboration
with the Gifted Children’s section
of the Education Ministry, and the
Education Department at the Tel Aviv
cinematheque.
In 2014 350 children in grades 5-9
from all over the country participated
in the program, creating 25 live and
animated movies. Three of these will
be screened at the festival followed
by a panel discussion in Arabic and
Hebrew with some of the counselors
and students.

Making a movie for children

The first of its kind, and a first for
Israel, this is an international
project dedicated to the production
of a feature-length film for children
and youth to be shown in movie
theaters.
The Tel Aviv International Film
Festival for Children and Youth
(TAIFFCY) is behind the initiative,
in cooperation with the Israel Film
Fund and the Scriptwriters Guild
of Israel.
The creators of six projects will
meet at the festival for two intensive
days of lectures, presentations
and professional discussions with
representatives from the local and
German film industry.
The venture is aimed at encouraging
the local film industry and expanding
the field of filmmaking for children,
as well as enabling a connection
among local artists, producers
and investors and their German
counterparts in the hope of future
cooperation.
At the end of the project the Israel
Film Fund will recommend one project
out of six, and pass it to the approval
of IFF management. If approved, The
investment budget for the film will
range from 800,000 NIS to 2 million.
The resulting film will have its
Israeli premiere at TAIFFCY.

The Tel Aviv International Children’s
Film Festival is proud to host one
of our beloved childhood heroines, a
star of the nostalgic book, “Eva visits
Noriko-san” - Mrs. Noriko Shiraishi, or
as the Israeli knows her: Noriko-San,
the girl from Japan!
Noriko was born in Tokyo in 1950,
and at the age of five and a half was
photographed for a children’s photo
book published in Sweden that soon,
after it was translated, became a
bestseller in Israel. This first visit
of Mrs. Noriko Shiraishi to Israel
is an initiative by the Festival,
Sifriyat Hapoalim of the Kibbutz
Hame’uchad Inc., the Division for
Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the
Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
and via a lot of help from the Israel
Embassy in Tokyo and the Embassy of
Japan in Israel.
At the event we’ll screen Dvorit
Shargal’s fascinating documentary
“Where is Elle-Kari and what happened
to Noriko-san?” The movie takes a
roundabout journey in quest of the
vanished heroes and heroines of these
unforgettable books. There’ll also
be a brief panel discussion with our
guest of honor and the director. Those
buying a reprint of the book ‘NorikoSan the Girl from Japan’ will get a
copy personally signed by Noriko.
