Mortar Grinder RM 200 The famous “Retsch Mill” is the classic in the product range. It was patented in 1923 by F. Kurt Retsch and soon became the worldwide ✔ The unmatched original ✔ Excellent homogenization ✔ Very easy handling synonym for modern lab technology as it replaced tiresome grinding with hand mortars. Today, RETSCH presents the latest generation of the “Retsch Mill”, the RM 200, which continues to set the standard in this product segment. The new RM 200 can be used for both dry and wet grinding down to a final fineness of <10 µm. The useful volume has been increased by 40 ml compared with the previous model. The mill allows for efficient size reduction and homogenization of the sample due to its advanced scraper. This ensures the removal of caked-on sample material from the mortar walls and continuously feeds it back to the grinding process. A performance display shows the current degree of loading of the mill, which allows the pestle pressure to be optimized. The operation of the RM 200 has been further improved. Both the pestle and scraper can be replaced without the use of any tools, which makes cleaning the mill quicker and easier. Q3 [%] The RM 200 is particularly suitable for these applications: Biology + Chemistry Drugs, frozen yeast cells, fertilizer, salt 100 90 80 Percent by volume Applications. The scraper feeds the material into the area between the mortar and pestle. This forced feed ensures that the whole of the sample is continuously subjected to the grinding and trituration process and is also thoroughly mixed. The pestle is not located in the center of the mortar but is offset; contact with the rotating mortar and the sample causes it to rotate automatically. The necessary grinding pressure is achieved by the weight of the pestle itself combined with the adjustable spring pressure acting on its axis. the sample page 3 die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:37 Uhr Seite 4 Planetary Ball Mill. The New Planetary Ball Mill PM 400 The Planetary Ball Mill PM 400 is a robust, compact, floor model that can process up to 8 samples simultaneously down to final finenesses in the submicron range. It is particularly suitable for longterm trials, colloidal grinding and mechanical alloying. The new PM 400 is a real powerhouse. A selectable speed range from 30 to -1 400 min in combination with an effective sun wheel diameter of 300 mm guarantees a high energy input and therefore analytical fineness in a very short time. The new model now offers an even greater range of applications, combined with improved operating comfort and safety. ✔ Extremely high fineness down to the nano range ✔ Power failure backup ■ with storage of remaining grinding time ✔ 1-button operation with graphics display ■ Programmable starting time – As the starting time of the grinding process can be programmed in advance, it can also be started when the user is not present. Thus, overnight grinding is no longer a problem. Power failure backup – If there should be a power cut during operation the PM 400 will save all parameters including the remaining grinding time up to the time that the power cut occured. When the power supply is restored the current operating status is shown and the grinding process can be resumed. Without this information the sample would have to be rejected and the whole grinding process started again. ■ 1-button operation with graphics display – this feature allows the quick and easy programming of up to 10 parameter combinations in 13 languages. The easily accessible grinding chamber of the PM 400 is acoustically insulated and equipped with a powerful fan which cools both the grinding chamber and grinding jars. page 4 the sample die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:37 Uhr Seite 5 Planetary Ball Mill. Production of nanoparticles with the Planetary Ball Mill PM 400 The production of ultrafine grinding products requires particular stress conditions, as the smaller the size of a solid particle, the more difficult it is to break it down by mechanical forces. Ultrafine grinding by mechanical stress is primarily possible in liquid media and requires a high energy input together with the application of pressure-shearing forces, the so-called sliding fracture. The Planetary Ball Mill PM 400 from RETSCH meets these requirements. Applications. The choice of grinding jars with the suitable ball charge also has a decisive influence on the degree of fineness. Grinding jars and grinding balls made from zirconium oxide with their high abrasion resistance are particularly suitable for ultrafine grinding. The correct interaction between parameter settings and grinding jar filling is crucial in enabling colloid grinding to be successfully carried out in the shortest possible time. The PM 400 is particularly suitable for these applications. Four 500 ml zirconium oxide grinding jars were used, 60% of the jar volume were filled with 3 mm dia. grinding beads. In addition, 180 ml isopropanol was added to each jar. As wet grinding can result in overpressure in the grinding jars, the safety closing device should be used. Each grinding jar then weighs approx. 8.5 kg. Even when the PM 400 is operated with such heavy -1 jars it runs quietly and safely. With a sun wheel speed of 320 min in interval operation a final fineness of d50 = 0.99 µm was achieved after only 150 minutes; after 600 minutes this value was 0.18 µm. The direction of movement of the sun wheel is opposite to that of the grinding jars in the ratio 1:-2 (or 1:-2.5 or 1:-3). The grinding balls in the grinding jars are subjected to superimposed rotational movements, the socalled Coriolis forces. The difference in speeds between the balls and grinding jars produces an interaction between frictional and impact forces, which releases high dynamic energies. The interplay between these forces produces the high and very effective degree of size reduction of the planetary ball mill. the sample page 5 die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:37 Uhr Seite 6 Vibratory Disc Mill. Vibratory Disc Mill RS 200 Optimized drive kinematics for highest reproducibility The Vibratory Disc Mill RS 200 from RETSCH is used for the quick, loss-free grinding of hard, brittle and fibrous materials to analytical fineness. In comparison to its predecessor, the RS 200 has a much stronger motor which increases the energy input and therefore the grinding performance even further. The drive kinematics have been optimized in such a way that the grinding results, also after short grinding times, achieve a very high degree of reproducibility. ✔ Powerful StabilizedPlane-Drive ✔ Excellent reproducibility ✔ Analytical fineness in seconds ✔ 1-button operation with graphics display page 6 the sample The operation of the new model is much more convenient. The grinding parameters are entered using a single button, in addition to the current settings a graphics display shows service and operating information. Up to 10 parameter combinations can be stored and the user can choose between 13 languages for menu guidance. The powerful instrument runs steadily and smoothly, even with heavy grinding sets and at maximum speed. The mill is acoustically insulated, compact and stands on 4 rollers, which make it easier to move about. It satisfies all relevant safety requirements. A comprehensive range of grinding sets is available for the RS 200. In addition to materials such as special steel, tungsten carbide, agate and zirconium oxide, a steel version is available for heavy-metal-free grinding. Grinding dishes with nominal volumes of 50, 100 or 250 ml can be used, depending on the amount of sample. A grinding set for the Vibratory Disc Mill consists of a grinding dish with cover which contains the grinding tools – a disc and a ring. The grinding sets are characterized by the following advantages: ■ Secure seat due to built-in anti-twist safeguards on cover and base ■ User-friendly gripping edges on dish and cover ■ Protective jacket made from stainless steel (for agate, zirconium oxide and tungsten carbide sets) ■ Optimal sealing with o-ring The grinding sets have been specially developed for extreme trial conditions such as high sample throughput and high mechanical stress. die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:38 Uhr Seite 7 Vibratory Disc Mill. Size reduction performance and reproducibility in comparison Vibratory Disc Mills are designed to achieve a reproducible degree of fineness required for spectral analyses in a short grinding time. The grinding results are significantly influenced by the movement patterns of the free masses. A “Quarter Minute Test” (QMT) evaluates the formation and stability of the movement patterns of Vibratory Disc Mills. The illustration shows that with the RS 200 a d90 value of 106 µm was achieved after a grinding time of only 15 seconds, whereas under the same conditions the comparative mills only achieved d90 values of 205 µm and 278 µm. All mills were operated with maximum speed. The new, powerful Stabilized-Plane-Drive of the RS 200 allows for the extremely rapid formation of the movement pattern inside the grinding jar which is reflected in the higher fineness after 15 seconds. The superiority of the drive kinematics of the new RS 200 is proven by its high final fineness as well as its remarkable reproducibility. In another trial under the same conditions it was ascertained that the grinding results of the RS 200 after 60 seconds show by far the smallest standard deviation. The grinding set is firmly attached to the vibration plate with a quick-action lever. The plate with the grinding set is subjected to circular horizontal vibrations. The centrifugal force acting on the grinding rings in the dish results in extreme pressure, impact and frictional forces acting on the sample. The rotational vibrations are produced by a frequency controlled 3-phase 1.5 kW motor. The new Stabilized-Plane-Drive ensures that the main directional movement of the drive train is secured in a plane. This prevents the jar from gyrating or tumbling. A sensor recognizes the presence of agate grinding sets and automatically -1 limits the speed to 700 min to avoid damaging the agate. the sample page 7 07.09.2006 10:38 Uhr Seite 8 Pellet Press. Hydraulic Pellet Press PP 40 Pr em ie re ! die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd RETSCH now offers the new Pellet Press PP 40 as a useful addition to sample preparation in the RS 200. Performance data. Sample material This instrument features an individual pressure force regulation and controls not only the pressure force, but also the pressure build-up and release during the pressing process. This reduces the internal stress on the sample and ensures that even difficult materials are pressed perfectly. This new generation of acoustically insulated and completely closed Pellet Presses meets the highest safety requirements. It can have a crucial influence on the analysis signal, as the intensity of the fluorescent radiation decreases as the particle size increases. The limited outlet depth of the characteristic radiation makes it necessary that the distribution of elements in the sample is homogeneous and representative for the whole sample amount. Reliable and meaningful analytical results can only be obtained if these requirements are fulfilled. The Vibratory Disc Mill RS 200 offers perfect sample preparation for XRF analysis. It is particularly suitable for the rapid reduction in size of mineral substances such as cement. The RS 200 can pulverize a sample with a feed size of 15 mm to a fineness <60 µm in only a few seconds. During sample preparation care must be taken that the grinding tools are made of a material that is neutral-to-analysis with respect to the elements to be analyzed, as abrasion can always occur during the grinding process. With the RS 200 you can choose between 5 different grinding set materials. This ensures processing of the sample without contamination. In order to be able to press a stable tablet it is often necessary to add a binding agent to the sample before the grinding process. The sample can then be pelletized in a Pellet Press such as the PP 40. The “small” solution for XRF For preparing small amounts of sample for XRF we recommend the use of our Mixer Mill MM 301, in which 2 samples can be ground at the same time. It can achieve final finenesses down to 5 µm without any problems. After the grinding process the sample is placed in a special polystyrene mixing jar together with a binding agent and then mixed in the MM 301. The homogenized material can now be pelletized in the Pellet Press PP 25 to produce 32 or 40 mm tablets for analysis. page 8 the sample die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:38 Uhr Seite 9 Fluid Bed Dryer. Fluid Bed Dryer TG 200 Quick and gentle drying The new Fluid Bed Dryer TG 200 is designed for universal use in quality control, sample preparation and R&D. It permits the gentle drying of bulk goods without localized overheating. The powerful fan ensures optimal air throughput so that the products to be dried are loosened up and thoroughly mixed. The interval operation achieves still better mixing of the fluidized bed. The maximum temperature of 150 °C is a considerable improvement compared with its predecessor. In comparison to conventional drying ovens, the fluidized bed drying of the TG 200 results in a notable increase in performance. At idle speed the fan produces 3 an air flow rate of up to 185 m /h. This results in drying times that can be short as 5 minutes depending on the amount and moisture content of the material. This represents a considerable saving in time and is also benefical for the product, which is exposed to less thermal stress. Temperature, drying time and air flow can be set digitally and continuously adjusted. Accessories available include 6 liter drying containers made of glass or stainless steel. If small amounts of different materials have to be dried frequently and cross-contamination has to be avoided then the use of the 0.3 liter drying container is recommended; the insert is equipped with 3 of these complete with filter bag. ✔ Very short drying times ✔ Digital parameter setting ✔ Gentle drying without contamination Performance data. TG 200 Technology Drying in the TG 200 makes use of the fluidized bed process. Ambient air is drawn in through a filter. A blower moves the air across the heating elements, and ultimately forces it through the perforated plate and into the detachable drying container. The solid particles are blown upwards and dispersed and thus kept separate from one another. Thus their sticking together is avoided - an annoying problem in other processes. The warm air stream extracts moisture from the particles and then exits through the filter bag in the cover of the drying container. the sample page 9 die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:38 Uhr Seite 10 ® CAMSIZER . The New CAMSIZER ® Particle size and shape analysis ✔ 100% higher resolution ✔ Extreme depth of sharpness higher than that of the light source in the predecessor. ✔ Optimized software CAMSIZER provides an excellent resolution over the complete measuring ✔ Excellent compatibility to sieve analysis The CCD cameras in the new CAMSIZER now work with a 100% higher resolution which means that more than 45 Megapixels are measured per second. The intensity of the new LED-stroboscope light source is 20 times Extremely short exposure times allow for pin sharp images. The new range from 30 µm to 30 mm. Thanks to newly developed fitting algorithms, the measuring results are perfectly compatible to those of sieve analysis. Measuring principle The CAMSIZER uses the digital image processing measurement principle. A vibratory feeder transports the sample to the measurement field, where the particles fall between an extended light source and two CCD cameras. The projected particle shadows are recorded at more than 60 images per second and analyzed. Each single particle in the bulk goods flow is recorded and evaluated. A new type of LED-stroboscope light source produces pin sharp images and allows distortion-free page 10 the sample determination of the projection areas due to extremely short exposure times. The sharp contrast makes details of the surface characteristics of the particles visible, almost as under a microscope. The frequency of the light flashes is so high that the stroboscopic flickering is not visible to the naked eye. The unique and patented 2-camera system ensures an excellent depth of focus and therefore achieves the highest precision throughout the whole measuring range. The zoom camera provides the highest resolution right down to the micron range. The basic camera also records larger particles and ensures that the results have a high degree of statistical certainty. This guarantees the outstanding reproducibility of the CAMSIZER measuring results, even when only comparatively small sample amounts are available. The results are saved in at least 1,000 size classes. die Probe29_060901_gb.qxd 07.09.2006 10:38 Uhr Seite 11 ® CAMSIZER . Applications. The CAMSIZER is particularly suitable for these applications: ■ abrasives ■ pharmaceuticals ■ carbon black/coal ■ plastics ■ catalysts ■ polystyrene ■ coffee ■ refractory products ■ fertilizers ■ salt/sugar ■ food ■ sand ■ glass/ceramics ■ and many more ■ metal powders Performance data. New, intuitive software Measuring principle Measuring range Measurement The CAMSIZER software is clearly structured and process-oriented, the operation is simple and intuitive. All control and evaluation functions are available in a single program. The measuring parameters are stored in measuring tasks, so that comparable sample material can always be measured under the same conditions. A wizard function helps to create these measuring tasks, so that the selection of transport speed, camera and evaluation settings can be carried out quickly and reliably. Various password-protected user levels enable advanced users to configure the software themselves for routine operation. In this way the CAMSIZER can also be operated by untrained personnel, without settings being altered or lost. The measuring data can be saved and managed locally on a PC as well as automatically in a network. With the functions “Trend Analysis” and “Daily Report” alterations in the sample quality can be recognized and quantified.
