Therefore, pressurized solvent extraction (PSE) has established itself in environmental analysis. At elevated pressure and temperature conditions, analytes diffuse from the matrix to the extracting solvent more quickly due to higher analytes solubility and improved penetration of the sample matrix. Thanks to the unique design of BUCHI’s SpeedExtractor, pressurized solvent extraction is taken to a new dimension, especially in the field of trace and ultra-trace environmental analysis. The concept of the SpeedExtractor allows to extract up to six samples not one after the other, but at the same time in completely separated extraction cells. The SpeedExtractor’s parallel format is ideally complemented by the parallel concentrator Syncore Analyst or the parallel evaporator Multivapor. This paired system makes it possible to transfer collection vessels directly and therefore without any sample loss, and to concentrate then in parallel to pre-defined residual volumes or to evaporate then to dryness. Unmatched speed and low running costs Due to elevated pressure and temperature as well as the parallel concept, extraction can be accomplished in a very short time, high sample throughput can be achieved and less solvent needs to be used compared to the classical Soxhlet extraction and comparable techniques. Flexibility The SpeedExtractor is available in two instrument configurations. The E-916 accommodates six extraction cells and the E-914 four extraction cells. The instruments differ in the size of the extraction cells: ∙∙E-916: cells with a volume of 10, 20 and 40 mL ∙∙E-914: cells with a volume of 40, 80 and 120 mL Flexible process parameters: 30 – 200 °C and 50 – 150 bar Application support Ease of use The extraction cells are sealed automatically. In addition to saving time, this also provides a high degree of safety as it eliminates handling errors. Moreover, reproducibility is ensured. Dedicated applications on extractions of e.g. PAH, PCB, phthalates, dioxins/furans, PFC, TPH and flame retardants from soil, sediment, sludge and polymer waste are available as short notes at www.buchi.com. A comprehensive application booklet provides a collection of reference applications and technical notes which are important for method development. Example of use Pesticides, PAH, PCB, PFC, flame retardants, dioxins/furans, TPH in solid matrices according to the U.S. EPA method 3545A 8 Download short notes of applications at: www.buchi.com/extraction-applications 9 Extraction Process Automated Soxhlet Extraction 1st Step: Extraction 2nd Step: Rinsing 3 rd Step: Drying Extraction System B-811 Reliability Automated Soxhlet Extraction and subsequent analysis are a proven technique for the determination of pollutants like PCBs, BFRs etc. in semi-solid and solid matrices. A flexible solution for solidliquid extractions is the Extraction System B-811. This system makes it possible to operate in four different modes without changing the glassware. Select from Soxhlet Standard, Soxhlet Warm, Hot Extraction or Continuous Flow – each process is fully automated and controlled. In addition, it is possible to use different solvents which allows for an ubiquitary application. The Extraction System B-811 provides high recovery rates and best precision due to high automation and reproducible conditions. Contamination or “memory-effects” are prevented by the inert design of the extraction system. This system extracts 4 samples concurrently, quickly and efficiently without the need of any supervision. Fast process by automation The amount of solvent used for extraction will be adjusted to the sample volume with an individual adjustable optical sensor. This way, the throughput of samples can be increased which will help to reduce costs. Additionally, the Extraction System B-811 delivers optimal recovery rates due to highend heating elements with optimized heating capacity. Flexibility Performance and accessories In addition to having the possibility to select from 4 different methods, extractions with different solvents with boiling points of up to 150 °C can be performed. It is possible to concentrate the sample after the extraction within the same unit. By using the product variation B-811 Large Sample Volume (LSV), substances which only exist in trace quantities can be concentrated to a quantity exceeding the detection limit by using a large amount of sample. In the LSV model, main glass parts are expanded by almost 60 %. ∙∙Beaker (Standard LSV): 150 mL 250 mL ∙∙Glass sample tube (Standard LSV): 130 mL 240 mL A variety of methods can be processed without needing to rebuild the instrument due to five core elements: lower- and upper-level heating, glass valves, optical sensors, and inert gas feed. Example of use Pesticides, PAH, PCB, dioxins/furans, PFC, TPH in solid matrices according to the U.S. EPA method 3541. The SpeedDigester K-439 is the first digester that combines the features of IR (speed) and block (temperature control) digesters. The temperature control and an excellent thermal homogeneity ensure fast digestion, lead to reproducible results and prevent foaming. Digestion systems based on a heated aluminum block are widely known and recommended in many official methods. Having many years of experience in this sector, BUCHI offers three models with two degrees of automation: K-437 manual and K-432 / K-438 fully automatic. Speed, process efficiency and reliability An increased sample throughput is achieved due to the considerably higher heat transfer capability of IR heaters compared to contact heating sources. Moreover, the heat-up and cool-down periods are considerably shortened. All SpeedDigester systems accept 300 mL and 500 mL sample tubes. The larger sample tubes are especially useful for TKN determination since they render the use of larger sample volumes possible. The SpeedDigester K-425 and K-436 are a cost effective solution for fast and reliable digestions. The temperature of these instruments is set manually. Pro-environmental Process convenience, ease of use and automation The Block Digesters K-437 and K-438 are instruments for the safe digestion of up to 20 samples in 300 mL sample tubes simultaneously. The models K-432 and K-438 offer the highest degree of automation. The programmable temperature profiles and the fully automatic lift make an unattended digestion possible. A built-in clock makes it possible to start the digestion at a previously defined time. The Digest Automat K-432 has been designed for digesting 12 samples of large volumes (500 mL) which is ideal for TKN applications with low detection limits. The models K-437 and K-438 are available with an accessory for the determination of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Pro-environmental Harmful fumes are captured by the tight suction system and can be neutralized by the Scrubber K-415. Harmful fumes are captured by the tight suction system and can be neutralized by the Scrubber K-415. Example of use Nitrogen in soil, sediments, sludge, water and wastewater, COD in water and phosphate Example of use TKN in water/wastewater, Aqua Regia Digestion for heavy metals RoHS: Pb and Cd according to DIN EN 62321 12 Download short notes of applications at: www.buchi.com/kjeldahl-applications 13 Evaporation Process Concentration, Evaporation and SPE Syncore Analyst SPE-Module for Syncore Analyst Concentrating large sample volumes to pre-defined residual volumes is often a cornerstone in environmental analysis. The parallel design and the evaporation under vacuum result in a fast and gentle concentration. Pre-defined residual volumes are achieved by means of a locally cooled appendix. It further provides high recovery rates due to the smooth sample processing and the Flushback Module. Conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE), an essential step in many analytical procedures, inclu des a number of laborious steps. With the help of this modified Syncore, all essential work-up steps including the evaporation of the eluates, can be achieved without the need of any sample handling between the individual steps. Innovative design The flexible design concept of the Syncore allows one unit to perform as a parallel evaporator (Polyvap) which can be instantly converted into a parallel concentrator (Analyst). The Syncore Analyst can concentrate different volumes (500 mL, 250 mL or 120 mL) to residual volumes of 0.3 mL, 1 mL or 3 mL. Three rack formats are available depending on the sample volumes (4, 6 or 12 positions). Process efficiency, precision and high recovery rates The sample vessels of the Analyst R-12 (120 mL) can be used as collection vials of the SpeedExtractor, making the sample transfer between the extraction step and the concentration process obsolete. High recovery rates, even for highly volatile substances, are achieved by continuous rinsing of the glass walls with the help of the Flushback Module. The high process control leads to concentration without supervision, with good reproducibility and precision. The individual sealing system and the separated vacuum channels guarantee to prevent cross-contamination. Evaporation: Rotavapor and the parallel evaporator Multivapor The Multivapor is a compact 6 or 12 position parallel vortex evaporator. The evaporation under vacuum guarantees the smallest possible negative impact on the environment due to the high solvent recovery. A flexible sealing system with a series of specific adapters covers a wide spectrum of sample tubes, rendering the time consuming sample transfer unnecessary. Further advantages: ∙∙Visible processing ∙∙Small footprint when combined with the Rotavapor Example of use Evaporation of different solvents to dryness in a broad range of common glassware 14 Example of use Download short notes of applications at: Concentration of different solvents to residual volumes in environmental analysis www.buchi.com/evaporation-applications 15 Analysis Process Distillation and Titration Distillation Units K-350 / K-355 and KjelFlex K-360 The robust and versatile distillation systems are used for a wide range of environmental applications, such as Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) determinations, Devarda, ammonia, phenols, volatile acids, formaldehyde and cyanide.
