Thermo Scientific sample collection and
preparation tools deliver a full lab-to-field
solution for on-site XRF analysis in
exploration and mining. These compact,
portable, battery-powered tools provide
everything required to deal with dry
geological material for rapid elemental
analysis in the field. The tools complement
Thermo Scientific portable XRF analyzers,
generating high-quality analytical data
within minutes, rather than days or weeks.
Everything You Need
More than 30,000 Thermo Scientific portable
x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers are at
work around the world, making our customers
more efficient and competitive. Over many
years, these analyzers have proven their
performance in the field on hundreds of
thousands of geological samples. In fact, the
analytical performance using our latest
handheld and field-portable analyzers is now
so good that we realize that the key limiting
factor to receiving lab-quality results is
adequate sample preparation – especially
for the XRF analysis of elements lighter
than calcium.
The new Thermo Scientific sample collection
and preparation tool kits make it easy and
quick to set up a full laboratory in the field.
These small, lightweight, unique tool sets are
ideal for transportation to remote locations
with minimal facilities. The analytical
performance of XRF analysis on geological
materials is significantly improved by
collecting representative aliquots and proper
preparation of the sample. Material with a
particle size range of 100μm and below,
which are necessary for high-performance
lab-quality XRF analysis, cannot be practically
achieved by any manual operation.
The Thermo Scientific sample collection and preparation
tool kits offer a unique, complementary solution for XRF
analysis in exploration and mining when used with our
portable XRF equipment.

Direct Rock Sampler Kit
Electric Hammer Mill Kit
The Thermo Scientific Direct Rock Sampler allows the
collection of fine powders from a rock face. The device
can be attached to either an AC (110/220V) or DC
(18-24V) powered commercial angle grinder. The special
diamond cutting blades easily generate a sample by
cutting slots, or even making a line cut, on the rock face
or drill cores. The powder is collected in a sample tube.
This material can then be cupped or pelletized for XRF
analysis. Proper sample collection and preparation can
result in a spatially resolved, quantitative rock-face
analysis in minutes, in the field!
The Thermo Scientific Electric Hammer Mill kit includes
the first 12VDC powered mill on the market. This powerful
device, weighing less than 5 kg, provides rapid milling of
samples and delivers a homogenized, fine powder in just
seconds. This mill operates at 150W at 12VDC, providing
hours of service on conventional automobile batteries.
The jumper-cable-type connectors are designed for
powering the mill directly from the battery posts on
your field vehicle. Rock chip size must be less than
8 mm to feed the mill. Included in the kit is a “Crusher
Tool” to reduce the size of larger rocks.

Both kits are complemented by the Thermo Scientific Pellet Press,
which produces solid powder tablets without binder with just one
hammer stroke. Utilizing this tool to prepare a sample is extremely
important when analyzing elements lighter than calcium. It also
improves the precision and accuracy of XRF in general. This unique
sample preparation tool has three benefits:
• Generates a sample with a consistent flat surface and density,
which minimizes matrix effects.
• Requires less than 5 grams of sample, which reduces
sample collection efforts.
Cores can be scanned with the XRF analyzer while crated, and
then samples dive-cut with the Direct Rock Sampler.
• Does not require
sample film,
which reduces
light element
performance.
Sample pellets can then be
analyzed in the Thermo Scientific Field Mate Test Stand. This ultra
compact test stand offers safe and convenient operation without the
need for power.
A sample can be
