ONEDAY COURSES this
Fall in Sunnyvale, CA
Introduction
The primary emphasis of the AMSPT Yearlong Course
is Orthopedic Manual Therapy and in particular the
Australian Manual Therapy Approach. This
approach, founded by Maitland GD, gives participants
a system of evaluation and management that integrates
evaluation, knowledge, clinical reasoning and treatment
to provide maximum clinical effectiveness.
Participants will learn how to fully evaluate the
neuromusculoskeletal system, including passive joint
mobility, stability, soft tissue mobility, flexibility,
neuromuscular integrity and neurodynamic mobility.
Additional sections include taping, stretching and soft
tissue mobilization.
Course Format
The class starts on August 26th, 2014 and the last class
is scheduled to be held on May 26th, 2015. The
majority of the classes will be held on Tuesday nights
from 6:00 pm till 10:00 pm in the Physical Therapy
Dept. of Kaiser Permanente. Located at 1400 Veterans
Blvd, Redwood City, CA 94063.
Throughout the course three of the classes will be held
in Sunnyvale, CA at Roland's clinic. This is so that
participants can observe evaluation and treatment of
real patients in a clinical setting.
The course includes a very detailed 300+ page manual
with photos for more than 95% of taught techniques.
The emphasis of the theory component is on clinical
reasoning (the strategies used to determine evaluation
and management). Included here are the principles of
technique selection, progression of treatment and
common clinical presentations. Other theory in the
course includes: pain sciences, chronic pain, clinically
relevant anatomy, and review of musculoskeletal
pathologies. Research and evidence to support the use of
manual therapy will be incorporated where possible.
To facilitate learning many of the theory lectures and
techniques are available online in video format at
www.rolandlucaspt.com.
Aside from instruction in theory, decision making and
manual therapy techniques, students will observe the
evaluation and treatment of actual patients. These
sessions aim to show therapists how they can integrate
taught material into their clinical practice.
Main Learning Objectives:
Ideal Candidates
Any PT is welcome to attend the AMSPT Yearlong
Course. However, after teaching the course for more
than 10 years it seems that there are a number of characteristics that result in maximum participant benefit. The
most beneficial of these include:
 Desire to grow beyond current level
 Willing to commit to the course material
 Motivated to study 2 hours per week outside of class
 Open to seeing familiar things in a new way
 Respond positively to feedback
 Prior experience with manual therapy not required
Manual Therapy Certification
Participants who successfully complete the AMSPT Yearlong Course receive credit for MT 1, 2, 3 & 4 courses with
Maitland Australian Physiotherapy Seminars (MAPS).
After taking additional MAPS courses yearlong participants will be eligible to sit the MAPS Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy exam. Passing MT-5 allows the
use of the COMT designation as a professional credential.

Course Philosophy
The intent of this course is to improve the clinical
effectiveness of course participants in the areas of
Orthopedics and Sports Physical Therapy.
Through Advanced Training in Manual Therapy,
Orthopedic and Sports PT, extensive clinical
experience, and knowledge of the evidence to
support clinical practice, the instructors feel that
exercise, patient education and manual therapy
based upon clinical assessment are essential to
success in physical therapy.
Although they do recognize the role of other
physical therapy interventions, their intent will be
to encourage participants to fully study course
material, and emphasize its utilization in the clinic.
