1 The Art of Self-Defense www.CGJNY.com Name: Phone Number: Adult Manual DEFEND WITH CONFIDENCE 2 SCHOOL INFORMATION The Creighton family has been teaching and participating in the martial arts for many decades. Sensei Jim Creighton Sr., Sensei Jim Creighton Jr. and Sensei Paul Creighton currently operate schools in New York and Atlanta, Ga. Combined the family holds seven Black Belts in five different styles (Japanese Jujitsu, Goshin Jutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Brazilian Jiujitsu under the world famous Renzo Gracie). We have a very strong passion for the martial arts and strive to bring you a well rounded curriculum with modern applications. Creighton Goshin Jutsu is a self-defense oriented martial art emphasizing the interaction of the striking arts with the jujutsu arts. Self-defense oriented style means that we place a very strong emphasis on techniques that can be used effectively in realistic situations, as a means of protection. In order to achieve this, the major principles from karate, muay thai, boxing, jujutsu and wrestling are blended together so that the techniques from one will compliment the techniques from another. Each student will develop a wellrounded fighting style, so that they can defend themselves with confidence in all five ranges of fighting. We place equal importance on each range so that you feel confident in each one. The transition from one range to the next will become automatic, because you will have trained the full circle of the martial arts. We honor the past yet welcome the future so we may embrace the martial arts in pursuit of self-mastery and boundless knowledge. We are always open to change, because without change improvement would not exist. We focus on constant and never ending improvement and embrace and apply infinite wisdom of others. This will allow philosophy, art and science to blend together to not only train the body, but strengthen the mind and soul. TESTING PROCEDURES At Creighton Goshin Jutsu, a student’s progress is measured by the awarding of stripes and belt promotions. A “stripe” that is added to a student’s belt, signifies that the student has moved a step closer to their next rank. Stripes are awarded between colored belts and are used as a measurement of that student’s progression. A “promotion” to a new belt color, signifies a completion of an entire set of curriculum and recognition of a student’s increase in skill level. There are five areas in which students must perform competently in order to be ready for belt and they are listed below. 1. Knowledge of Curriculum – Students must know the entire curriculum necessary to progress to the next level. Effort is rewarded more so at the beginning belt levels. Greater technical proficiency is expected as students attain their higher belt ranks. 2. Spirit and Energy – Students are expected to perform their techniques with a high degree of energy. “Kiai” and intensity of movement can demonstrate this. 3. Attitude and Protocol – Students should demonstrate a positive attitude and follow the protocol of the school at all times. 4. Fitness –Students are expected to improve their fitness level as they progress through the ranks. This can be demonstrated by performing the required movements with good endurance. 5. Basics and Applications - Good basics are the foundation of a good Martial Artists; therefore we expect students to perform basics competently at all belt levels. We have both technique and class hour requirements that need to be fulfilled for each belt rank. DEFEND WITH CONFIDENCE 3 DOJO PROTOCOL A. Without the presence of a good attitude at this school, your chances of achieving a Black Belt or any rank are non-existent. “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goals; nothing on earth help the man with the wrong mental attitude”. - W.W Ziege ATTENDANCE • You must demonstrate consistent attendance throughout our program to be recognized for this rank. Consistency and accomplishing small goals along the way is your path to Black Belt at our school. “Slow and steady wins the race” - Aesop PERFORMANCE • You must show proficient ability in blending and transitioning from technique to technique while training. The measurement of performance is different for each individual. Consistently improving from day to day, month to month and rank to rank is what you must strive for. “Those who confront the ill-prepared with preparation will stand victorious.” - Sun Tsu KNOWLEDGE • You must be able to demonstrate and understand all of the techniques in our manual. However, knowing how to only “demonstrate” each technique is not the goal. You must also understand and have studied each technique thoroughly to qualify for this rank. “It’s impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” - Epictetus DEFEND WITH CONFIDENCE 17 BASIC JAPANESE VOCABULARY Arrigato Ashi Atemi Waza Budo Bushi Bushido Bujutsu Chudan Dan Do Dojo Dachi Danzan Thank You Foot or leg Striking Techniques Martial Arts Warrior Way of the warrior Martial Arts Middle Level (chest region) Black belt grade Way, path to perfection Training hall Stance Cedar mountain (Hawaii Island) Eri Lapel Gedan Lower level (leg region) Geri Waza Kicking Techniques Go-No-Sen Defense is offense Goshin Jutsu The Art of Self-Defense Goshin Waza Gaeshi Gi Gari Geri Guruma Gatame Gake Gyaku Hai Haisoku Hajime Hidari Hanshi Hiza Harai Hane Ippon Jime Jodan Jitsu Ju Jujutsuka Jujutsu gi Self-Defense Techniques Takedown Martial art uniform Reap Kick Wheel Lock Hook Reverse Yes Instep of foot Begin Left Ninth and tenth dan’s Knee Sweep Springing One Strangulationg/choking technique Upper level (head region) Art Soft Student of jujutsu Uniform worn by jujutsuka Juji Kakato Kansetsu Waza Kata Ki Kiai Kime Kokoro Koshi Kumite Kyoshi Katame Waza Kyotsuke Kyu Kodenkan Cross Heel or foot Joint locking tech.
