The clusters Cluster 1 1. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was one of the busiest squares in Berlin. Already in the Middle Ages it was the center of the city and since the reunification of East and West Berlin the large square is primed to once again become the center of Berlin. There are 3 monuments on the square, the TV tower, the Weltzeituhr and the Fountain of International Friendship. The first, known as the Fernsehturm, with a length of 365m, is one of the largest structures in Europe. The world clock shows the names of a number of foreign cities in different time zones. The Fountain of International Friendship is a 23m wide circular fountain. At the center of the fountain is a modern structure that consists of a series of basins along which water flows down. At this square an important building is located, which plays an important role in our project: the school hosting the project. Take a picture of the sign of the school. What time is it? The Weltzeituhr will tell you the time. Take a picture of the time of one of the countries of one of the group members. 2. Nikolaiviertel is the oldest part of Berlin still standing from the 1200's. This historic district is an excellent place to get something to eat. They offer very good traditional German food and excellent beer. So, hungry? Take a seat and be happy. What is on the menu at Am Nußbaum 3? Take a picture of the menu. 3. The former GDR was officially an atheist state, yet the founding fathers of socialism were worshipped almost as deities. Who are they? Take a picture of two members of the group, representing the large statue of the founding fathers of socialism. Make sure that the picture looks as much as the real thing as possible. 4. Granted UNESCO National Heritage Site status in the year 1999, Berlin's Museum Island in the river Spree was designed to be "a sanctuary of art and science". One of the five marvelous museums that sit on Berlin's Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum being the newest, first opened in 1930. The Altes Museum (Old Museum) is one of the masterpieces of the area. There are other museums and different interesting buildings on the island, like the Berliner Dom. Take a picture of the area, which depictures what this Island means to you. Cluster 2 1. 2. 3. President John F. Kennedy ordered the U.S. forces to build three checkpoints at different points in the wall through which diplomatic corps and allied forces could enter West Berlin. Go to the most famous. Take a picture acting as a person crossing over. In 1996, Galeries Lafayette’s first German branch was built on the corner of the Friedrichstrasse and the Französische Strasse. The Parisian store had its sights set to be on Berlin’s map from the beginning. After endless pulling down of buildings, building works, digging and restoration, on the new Friedrichstrasse was also a new glossy building. Jean Nouvel’s glass temple with his main tenants. Galeries Lafayette was the first noticeable symbol for the Friedrichstrasse. Passages and an early sign of hope for other houses and shops to follow. Vive le Mode! Take a picture of the group which shows your interpretation of the slogan of the Galeries, using Jean Nouvel’s glass piece of art as a background. The harmonious Gendarmenmarkt is known as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. It was created at the end of the 17th century as a market place, the Linden Markt. The current name is derived from the Regiment Gens d'Armes, who had their stables here from 1736 to 1773. Gendarmenmarkt is the setting for the Concert Hall, the most recent building on the square. It was badly damaged during the Second World War and when reconstruction finished in 1984, it was turned into a concert hall. Student Manual - p6 Konzerthaus is now home to the Berliner Philharmoniker. Further, the twin German and French Cathedrals opposite each other complete the picture. What’s on the Program of the Berliner Philharmoniker? Take a picture of one of the concerts that are scheduled to play this week. Cluster 3 1. This gate was originally part of a wall surrounding Berlin and was the main entrance to the city. After the war and the division of Berlin, the Gate was right at the border between East and West Berlin, just inside the Russian sector. The gate symbolized Germany's division. With the fall of the wall in 1989, people flocked here to celebrate. The monument was renovated again in 2001; it opened as good as new on October 3, 2002. Make a representing picture of what this monument means to you. 2. You go now to the seat of the German Parliament, one of Berlin's most historical landmarks. Before the unification, it was located right next to the Wall. In 1933, a fire broke out, destroying much of the building, which was damaged even more at the end of the war, when the Soviets entered Berlin. The picture of a Red Army Soldier raising the Soviet flag on the Reichstag is one of the most famous 20th century images and symbolized Germany's defeat. Since April 1999, the building is once again the seat of the Bundestag. Take a picture of a politician with the members of the group. Cluster 4 1. After the fall of the Wall it was decided to rebuild the whole area, 480.000 square meters large. Construction started in 1994 and officially opened in 1998. The project included the construction of several landmark towers, a shopping arcade, an entertainment center and residential buildings. The first building completed was the Debis tower, designed by Renzo Piano. Other eye catchers are the Sony Center, a complex designed by Helmut Jahn, and its neighbour, the brown-brick Kohlhof building featured an observation deck at a height of 93m. Take a panoramic picture of the city and of the tent-like roof. What is the new cultural highlight at the heart of Berlin? Take a picture of it. 2. This is a tribute to the Jews who died before and during World War II as part of Hitler's plan to exterminate them. Occupying about 19,000 square meters of space the Berlin Holocaust Memorial is made up of 2.711 gray stone slabs that bear no markings, such as names or dates. The slabs undulate in a wave-like pattern. Each is a five-sided monolith, individually unique in shape and size. Some are only ankle high whereas others tower over visitors. The paths that are shaped between the slabs undulate as well. Eisenman, the architect, hoped to create a feeling of groundlessness and instability; a sense of disorientation. Most will agree that he succeeded. The architect has said that he hopes it will merely become a natural part of the city, blending in with its background; used for shortcuts on the way home from work or a place of peace and quiet on a chaotic day. Underground is the Memorial as interesting. Make a short film telling a true story of a family or an individual who faced the wrath of the Nazi party and that helped design the Memorial. 3. The Cross Points – A Cultural Dialogue series, accompanying the Unterwegs chamber music concerts of the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra, invites interested listeners to lectures, workshops and concerts exploring the music of other cultures. A new project this year will be the Late Lounge, introducing contemporary and world music performed by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and guests. Student Manual - p7 The whole group together will sing a song, in at least 3 different languages - Record it. 4. Berlin: an exciting, cosmopolitan cultural hub that never ceases to attract artists from all over the world. A diverse cultural scene, a critical public and an audience of film-lovers characterize the city. In the middle of it all, a great cultural event and one of the most important dates for the international film industry. Around 300,000 sold tickets, more than 19,000 professional visitors from 115 countries, including 4,000 journalists: art, glamour, parties and business are all inseparably linked to this event. What is the name of this international event and which edition is held this year? Take a picture of the name and the edition. Cluster 5 1. 2. 3. 4. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks. The church was partially destroyed during a bombing raid in 1943. The damaged tower is a symbol of Berlin's resolve to rebuild the city after the war and a constant reminder of the destruction of war. The church is located at the Breitscheidplatz, the center of former West-Berlin. It is still the commercial center of Berlin, with the Ku'damm shopping street and Europa Center nearby. The Gedächtniskirche is a constant reminder of the destruction of war. Convert the church in a symbol of peace for the future. The whole group takes a picture that captures the hope for peace in the world. KaDeWe, Kaufhaus des Westens, is a department store in Berlin. With over 60,000 square meters of shop space and more than 380,000 articles available, it is the second largest department store in Europe. It attracts 40.000 to 50.000 visitors every day. Take a picture of what is for the group the most representative spot in the store: a department, an architectonical structure or detail, the decoration, a product, the clients… Involve the group. The Urania is one of the most visited locations in Berlin with a unique educational and cultural program. There are different actions such as lectures, plays, concerts, seminars, discussions and performances. More than 200.000 people visit Urania Berlin every year. Furthermore, Urania Berlin is a well-known art-house cinema and one of the biggest venues during the international film festival “Berlinale” – Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin”. Urania Berlin is a registered association with 2,500 members and more than 80 partners and gets no financial institutional support. Urania Berlin can also be rented as a multifunctional event center for up to 1,500 visitors. Take a picture of the group representing a play. One of the largest zoological gardens in the world, Berlin's Zoologischer Garten has been thrilling visitors since it opened more than 150 years ago. These days, you'll be treated to more than 15,000 animals representing about 1,400 species. Cages are rare and most animals roam free in re-creations of their natural habitats. Take a picture of the group at one of the entrance gates. Cluster 6 When you have time left: 1. Interesting things that are further away. Some groups will start here, some will have to do it at the end of their city rally. Try to as many as possible but make sure you return in time to the hostel. Make a creative picture at each location. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. O2 Arena Opera Olympia Stadion Part of the Berlin Wall (the Kiss). ICC Berlin and Messe Berlin (Funkturm) Student Manual - p8 7. 8. 9. 10. DDR Museum Soviet War Memorial Charlottenburg Palace At the center of a large roundabout in Tiergarten, stands the tall Siegessäule. From here you will enjoy a beautiful overview of the city. 11. Together with a German family enjoy a currywurst and a bier. 12. From the Oberbaumbrücke you can wonder the Molecule Men sculpture and River Spree. Student Manual - p9 4.2. The WOW assignment 5.1. Context In the present competitive tourist industry, where people can easily compose and book their trip themselves, being innovative and creative when offering tours and holidays is a must. Following up on trends, creating new travel concepts, specializing and staying in touch with the client is the key to success in this business. 5.2. Assignment 1. Create a new tour operator with a specific focus (country or region, target group, price, transportation, …) and define the USP (unique selling proposition) of the company. Brand this company with a mission statement, logo and catch phrase. 2. Create the first product of this company; a trip for a group of 20 people (where they are from, type of group, travel time and duration, type of trip,… these are all aspects the group needs to determine). No matter how long the trip takes, you work out 3 days of it very precisely. You determine and elaborate upon 15 service elements that include transportation, accommodation and entertainment. Student Manual - p11 5.3. Learning Goals Knowledge 1. Creating an innovative product for the tourism trade in an autonomous way Spotting and incorporating travel trends into your product Generating innovative ideas to answer to market opportunities which are different from the competitor’s offers Converting, together with others, an innovative idea into a realistic product from a selling point of view Designing and managing a project together with others . Skills 2. Communicating skills Using English as communication language in a multicultural group Developing and practicing intercultural communication skills Experiencing the implications of differences among cultures for international cooperation Being able to function in a multicultural and interdisciplinary group 3. Managing a project and the project processes. Coping with unexpected events which disrupt the processes in the project group, and reacting in an adequate manner. Handling a simple conflict situation in a multicultural and interdisciplinary project group. Evaluating the contributions of members of the project group and giving feedback to the project group Self-evaluation of the own contributions and reflection on own performance Student Manual - p12 5.4. Groups The average group will consist of 8 students, each with different nationalities and backgrounds. To every group a lecturer is assigned as a coach. The ITB in Berlin will be used as a source of information to acquire a broader knowledge of unfamiliar destinations, as well as to extend your network. 5.5. Innowiz INNOWIZ is an innovation method and an evolving creativity tool database. It is an open source project initiated by the Industrial Design Center at Howest University (Belgium). One could see innovation as the outcome of a creative process. A creative process consists of 4 steps: problem definition, idea generation, idea selection and idea communication. You can use this step-by-step plan as a cyclic problem solving method for tackling your challenging projects related to work or life. The INNOWIZ method is just as useful for structuring creative (brainstorm) sessions. You can enrich the 4 steps by making use of many different creativity techniques. Dries Laperre, creativity lecturer at Howest, has been involved in the INNOWIZ tool from the beginning. He was the project leader of both the play, mate! and INNOWIZ IN A BOX projects. During WOW Berlin Wouter Doornaert, founder of the creative company Elevenfeet and Ralph Nafzger, industrial designer, will lead the creativity team. The INNOWIZ team has invested in the development of hands-on tools, which can be used in brainstorm sessions, in group or individually. The user doesn’t have to know the methodology or have any knowledge about how creativity works. Just grab a tool and play! Student Manual - p13 5.6. ITB Berlin The ITB Berlin is the world’s largest tourism trade fair and the perfect place for you and your group to gather information and interact with the professionals from the tourism field. Your visit needs to be prepared well, in order to use your time efficiently at the fair. You need to make sure to collect as much information as possible at the fair if you want to get the maximum out of the project week. In consultation with your coach, you must design a strategy for your visit to the fair, and plan which information is needed, which stands you will visit at the fair and how you are going to approach the trade contacts you selected. 5.7. Deliverables Your project work will result in two deliverables: 1. PowerPoint presentation to be delivered on Thursday evening 5 to 8 minutes per group 8 slides – summary, according to briefing below. Don’t deliver a detailed travel itinerary of your product! You spend max. 1 minute per slide. To be presented by 2 group members for the jury of coaches on Thursday. Make it…WOW! Deadline Thursday at 5 pm, via e-mail to wowberlin@howest.be + on USB. Which slides? Slide 1:The company Logo, name, slogan mission, USP, … Slide 2: The Competition Positioning map of your company in relation to the major competitors in the home countries of one of the group members Slide 3: The target group Who is the first client of the company? Slide 4: Destination Where do you send your client? Slide 5: 3 days of your program Slide 6: Your 3 top service elements (out of 15) Slide 7: The Cost Cost calculation of the trip (without the flight and per person) – before VAT, taxes and profit for your company. Remember to gather and use B2B prices. Slide 8: Come and check us out! Summary of the above mentioned arguments. Why do we have to visit you at the WOW exhibition and buy your product? (1 sentence, 1 word, 1 image) Student Manual - p14 2. Stand at the WOW Exhibition, to be delivered on Friday Set up your own stand at the WOW Exhibition. The students are expected to arrive at Urania at 8.45h. You have one table and a board behind the table which you can use to decorate your stand. Feel free to decorate your stand in a very WOW way! At least three members of your group will be present at the stand during the whole duration of the fair (in a rotating schedule) to pitch to potential clients. The others walk around to collect information about the other competing companies and their products. Prepare the pitch you will use to persuade visitors to buy your product. Make sure the message is consistent, no matter which team member delivers the pitch. Also think of ways to address visitors of the WOW exhibition so they stop to listen to your pitch. Make sure you can answer any question concerning your travel concept and that you can go into details. Prepare your stand as if you persuade end-users to book your product. 5.8. Public transportation: tickets A daily pass to use public transport in Berlin will cost you 6,70 euro; a single ticket costs 2,60 euro. So it’s worth to buy a week pass (7-Tage-Karte VBB-Umweltkarte Berlin/7-day-pass - areas AB, which is sufficient) for 28,80 euro. Airport Schönefeld is not in area AB, unfortunately. So people arriving at this airport have to buy a top-up for getting away from Schönefeld Airport. It still is cheaper than buying one-way tickets. At Schönefeld, there is a counter for public transport and the website provides information about where which bus is and where tickets can be purchased: http://www.berlin_airport.de/DE/ReisendeUndBesucher/AnUndAbreise/AnfahrtBusUndBahn/SXF/Oeff entlicheSXF.html 6.7. Code of conduct WOW Berlin is putting a lot of effort and money in the organization of this international project. In order to guarantee normal proceedings of the event, it is essential that the participating students and coaches will be sufficiently committed. Without this, organizing an event of this size would be just impossible. Consequently, a lot depends on the will of all parties involved to contribute toward the achievement of that aim. Here are a few guidelines you should bear in mind. All participants are expected to be punctual and to behave correctly during the project – be it at the EBC Hochschule, the ITB Fair or in the hostel. All students must respect the hostel regulations and more specifically other hostel guests’ sleep. Hostel decoration and furniture have to be left in the state they were found upon arrival. Students who do not observe these regulations will be expelled from the hostel and will have to find other accommodation at their own expense. Any damage caused in the hostel will have to be paid for immediately. Students should be present at all group meetings. They agree to schedule any additional meetings, if necessary, at a moment convenient for all group members. In case somebody is late or absent, the other group members should be acknowledged. All scheduled meetings should be attended on time and students are supposed to stay for the duration of the entire meeting. Students commit themselves to complete the project on time. Every group member will do their fair share of the work thoroughly and respect deadlines, in order to meet the demands of the group and the assignment. He/She should be supportive, courteous and respectful toward peers at all times. He/She will make decisions that are in the best interest of the group and not solely in their own interest. He or she will be participating actively in their group at all times and will help solve conflicts that might arise between group members. Students will listen attentively to their peers’ ideas and opinions and will collaborate with them in a creative fashion. In case of serious problems students will contact the coach/lecturer. By signing this agreement the student abides by the mentioned policies and regulations. Should for some reason expectations not be met, he or she will understand that they or any group member may be sanctioned in the form of lower marks. In case of severe problems the lecturer/coach will inform the staff of WOW Berlin, whereupon the student may be expelled from their group. The penalties can vary from a loss of ECTS credits, refusal by the organizers to grant a certificate of participation in the project or expulsion from the entire project. The student declares not to have any objections against their name and WOW Berlin related images being published on the project’s website. He/She also agrees that the presentations in which they participated during WOW Berlin, as well as the outcome of the teamwork, are published on the project’s website.
