SSC Overview and History The SSC is a permanent committee of the ISTH and is its scientific working arm. The SSC began in 1954 as the International Committee for the Standardization of the Nomenclature of the Blood Clotting Factors. Sixteen original members came together to meet the urgent need to communicate a consistent nomenclature for the many new clotting factors identified at the time. In 1958, the Committee adopted the Roman numeral system to label blood clotting factors, and by 1963, the system was the standard in professional literature. The group changed its name to the International Committee on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ICTH) as its scope subsequently expanded to tackle new problems in the fields of blood coagulation and hemorrhagic disorders. Years later, the ICTH felt the need for a larger, more open organization to support the international dissemination of information. In 1969, it founded the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and changed its name to the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC). Today, the SSC supports the ISTH’s mission by providing a forum where internationally recognized experts consider and discuss practical issues related to thrombosis and disorders of hemostasis. Conducting work through 20 subcommittees and working groups, SSC activities promote cooperation among leading international scientists and direct their energies to projects that generate reliable, standardized clinical and basic science tools. The SSC disseminates this knowledge to the global community by promoting education and exchange of ideas through publication of official reports, recommendations, and scientific meetings, notable of which is the annual meeting of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC Annual Meeting). In years coinciding with the ISTH biennial congress (odd years), the SSC Annual Meeting occurs just prior to the congress. In non-congress years, the SSC holds a stand-alone meeting, the last three of which have been held in Liverpool (2012), Cairo (2010), and Vienna (2008). 9 SSC 2014 Annual Meeting The sponsorship opportunities outlined in this prospectus are proposals only. The ISTH will hold its 60th Annual Meeting of the SSC (SSC 2014) from June 23 to June 26 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The ISTH recognizes the important role its corporate partners play as contributing stakeholders, and welcomes ideas on alternatives and input from partners to develop a package to meet their needs. In 2014, the SSC will celebrate 60 years of science, commemorating the set-up of the International Committee for the Standardization of the Nomenclature of the Blood Clotting Factors in 1954. The Scientific Program will have a focus on the rapidly changing field of thrombosis and haemostasis as molecular evolution prompts new approaches to regulatory control of our physiological, pathological and pharmacologic processes. Additionally, it will focus on research opportunities, peer connections and probing the areas of our genome. However, because some re-interpretations suggest food and beverage may be paid for by companies if considered a reasonable meal or refreshment for a delegate during the course of the meeting, we are including such items in this prospectus should your team decide you can consider them. In case you have an idea for a service, sponsorship or promotional option not included in this manual, please let us know. We are always happy to discuss opportunities that provide benefits to our delegates, industry partners and the ISTH. Neither symposium type is included as part of the ISTH meeting CME. Sponsors may elect to provide CME through a provider of their choice and cost. Or sponsors may directly develop the program. CME is not required by ISTH for sponsored symposia There are, however, key distinctions and requirements between ITH Special and Satellite symposia. Special Symposia are considered and positioned as part of the official scientific program of the meeting. As such, a Special Symposium must be of an educational quality and be compatible with the overall meeting program. No product-oriented programs are permitted. A Special Symposium’s program may be developed by the sponsor and requires approval from the Local Organizers. Satellite Symposia & Technical Sessions allow more flexibility in content. These symposia may be product-oriented or educational in scope and will be positioned as such. The sponsor is required to inform the Local Organizers of the program. Symposia sponsors are required to inform a subcontractor of all rules and requirements by ISTH in preparing the program. One Speaker Rule As per date of printing, the ISTH One Speaker Rule will apply to all special and satellite symposia, and technical sessions. This rule states: • Speakers at industry symposia/technical sessions are limited to participating in no more than one such symposium. In addition, they may chair another industry symposium/technical session as long as chairmanship does not include any responsibility to present. • Speakers at industry symposia cannot present on the same topic in the official scientific/educational program of the congress. To facilitate the selection of speakers by sponsors, ISTH will post on the meeting website the names, topics and affiliations of all speakers at the SSC 2014 meeting two (months prior to the deadline required for sponsored symposia program outlines.
