Introduction

Across Personal Edition
In this chapter:
Introduction (see below)
2.1
Introduction
The Across Personal Edition is the standalone version of Across. It includes the complete
range of Across translation features and is designed for all users who, e.g. work freelance or
are solely responsible for localization tasks within a company.
Freelance translators can work either in the standalone mode or connect as remote client to
the server of a customer, depending on the circumstances (see the chapter "Logging in“
starting on page 16).

Hardware
3
System Requirements
In this chapter:
Hardware (see below)
Software (see below)
MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express database (page 8)
Arial Unicode MS Font (page 8)
Requirements for
PCs running the
Personal Edition
For computers on which the Across Personal Edition is to be installed, hardware and
software requirements must be checked in advance. If necessary, install any missing
components prior to installation.
3.1
Hardware
The workstation should be equipped with a processor (Multicore-CPU recommended) with
1.5 GHz clock speed (2 GHz recommended). At least 1 GB RAM (2 GB and more
recommended) and 5 GB of hard drive space must also be available.
3.2
Software
The required operating system is Windows 7 or Windows 8 with the latest patches and
service packs. MS Internet Explorer 8.0, 9.0 or 10.0 should be installed. A minimum screen
resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels is required (1,280 x 900 pixels recommended).
For the deployment of the MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (see page 8), Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.5 SP1 is required. This software is included in the Across package and is
installed automatically during the installation of the Across Personal Edition, if needed.
MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express also requires the Windows components Microsoft
Windows Installer 4.5 and Microsoft Windows PowerShell 1.0. If the components are not
installed on your computer, you will be informed of this during the installation and can install
them manually.
Information on the end of support for older versions of Across and third-party components
and products is available at www.across.net/documentation/Across_end_of_support_en.pdf.
Generally, to process the supported document formats, Across does not require the
corresponding programs to be installed. However, the programs need to be installed for the
following functions and processes:
Installation of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), MS Office 2000 and higher:
• Checking in and out Office documents, RTF and TXT documents
• Creating and displaying previews of Office documents and RTF ant TXT documents
• Using the MS Office spell-checker
When using MS Office 2000, XP, or 2003, the installation of the Microsoft Office
Compatibility Pack is required.
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

3 System Requirements
MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Database
Please note that only the 32-bit edition of MS Office is supported. Use of the the 64-bit
version is currently not possible. However, documents created with a 64-bit version but
checked in and out with a 32-bit version can be processed with Across.
Installing additional programs:
In order to create previews of other document formats, corresponding programs must be
installed (e.g. Adobe FrameMaker for displaying MIF documents).
3.2.1 Using Antivirus Programs
If you use an antivirus program, such as Norton AntiVirus, the so-called "script blocking"
must be disabled in order to check Office documents in and out of Across and to be able to
create previews of them.
3.3
MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Database
By default, the Across Personal Edition operates on the basis of the "Microsoft SQL Server
2008 R2 Express“ database which is installed along with the installation of Across onto your
computer. Across will install its own instance with its own resources and its own database.
(In the previous Across versions prior to v5.0 SP1 patch H, SQL Server 2005 Express was
used by default, which was installed while installing Across.)
Besides MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, the Across Personal Edition also supports MS
SQL Server 2005 Express and MS SQL Server 2012 Express.
Please note that the SQL databases that Across creates during the installation for the
purpose of storing data must not be compressed. Windows enables the compression of
individual files, folders, or entire hard-disk drives in order to save storage space. However,
the SQL databases do not support this compression (see also page 31).
You will receive the latest approved version of the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with the
delivery or download of Across. Please check for updates, patches or service packs for the
SQL Server 2008 R2 Express at regular intervals. You can download it on the Microsoft
website. If you have any queries about updating the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, please
contact our support (see page 5).
3.4
Virtualization
Across supports the virtualization platforms Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware.
Apart from the resources that the host system needs, sufficient CPU capacity, RAM, and
storage space need to be allocated to the virtual machine. Due to the virtualization overhead,
the execution of Across and SQL Server on a virtual machine is slower than on physical
hardware.
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

3 System Requirements
Arial Unicode MS Font
3.5
Arial Unicode MS Font
The font "Arial Unicode MS" is required for working with Across, otherwise the Across
desktop cannot be adequately displayed.
"Arial Unicode MS (Standard)" contains the characters of nearly all character sets used
throughout the world. This guarantees that in addition to the Across interface, documents
can be displayed correctly in nearly any language (including documents in Arabic or Asian
languages).
If the font "Arial Unicode MS (Standard)“ has not been previously installed, Across will
indicate this in a corresponding dialog after installation.
Click Y es, if you have the needed Microsoft Office license. The required font will then be
automatically installed.

Introduction to Logging in
Each time you start Across, you can decide how you wish to work with it. You have two
operating modes to choose from:
- Across Standalone Personal Edition
Use the Standalone Personal Edition if you wish to use Across as a standalone work station.
The data will be stored in a database on your local computer.
- Across Standby Remote Client
Using the Standby Remote Client, you can access your customers' Across Server. You can
log in to the Across Server by means of a softkey that is made available to you either by the
customer or by your network administrator. You can either download the data to your
computer (crossWAN load) or import them from a data storage medium such as a USB stick
(crossWAN classic). After completing the task, you can either upload the data to the Across
Server or export them by means of a suitable data storage medium.
Information on working with Across as a Standby Remote Client is available in the user
manuals and in the Across Online Help in the chapter "Working Offline via the Internet".

Data backup
Backup
As part of crossGoodies, Across provides the tool P E Ba c kup Re st o r eT ool for backing
up your data. You will find the tool in the \ cr os sG o o die s \B ac ku p& Re st o r e _ P E
directory of the Across folder (e.g. C: \ P rog r am F il es \ Ac r o ss).
If you use the Personal Edition as a Standby Client (for connecting with an Across Server),
you can use this tool for backing up these data, too. However, we recommend backing up
the data by uploading the intermediate state of your tasks to the Across Server.
Proceed as follows to back up your Across data:
1. Run the P EB a ck u p R e st o r eT o o l. e xe tool by means of a double-click.
2. Then click Bro w s e.. . in order to determine a storage location and a name for the file
containing the backup (see 1 in the figure below). Then click O pen .
Please do not use the Across installation directory as storage location for the backup.
3. Enter the user name "sa" and the associated password (see 2). By default, the password
for MS SQL Server Express was set to "sa123456" (for version 4.00.0 SP2 and earlier)
or "sa!123456" (for versions from 4.00.0 SP2) during the installation.
4. Make sure that the checkbox "PE databases“ is enabled (see 3).
5. Now click Bac ku p ! to execute the tool. All data of the Across databases will be written
to the file you specified.
If you need to migrate your Across Personal Edition data to a new computer, refer to the
respective FAQ on page 27.
Please note that crossGoodies are not delivered as part of the Across package and as such,
are not covered by a warranty on the part of Across Systems GmbH, nor are they a
constituent of the update and support agreements. (Exceptions are those which are
integrated in Across by default.) The crossGoodies are based on a specific Across version;
forward and backward compatibility with other versions may need to be tested.
For a manual backup of Across and your Across data, back up the following files and
directories:
• The Across installation directory, usually C: \P r og ra m F il e s\ Ac r o s s.
• The Across directory in the Common Files, usually C: \ P ro g r am F i le s \Co mm on
Fil e s\ Ac r o s s.

The Across databases in the corresponding directory of the MS SQL Server, usually
C: \ P ro g r am F i l es \M S SQ L Se rv er \M SS Q L . 1 \M SSQ L \D at a.
Additionally, you should back up the registry.
Please note that the backup should only be performed by a qualified person. Across
Systems GmbH does not assume any liability in the event data loss.
6.1
Restoring Backed up Data
Proceed as follows to restore your backed up Across data:
1. Run the P EB a ck u p R e st o r eT o o l. e xe tool by means of a double-click.
2. Go to the Re st o r e tab (see 1 in the figure below).
3. Click Bro w s e. .. to select a file with your backed up Across data (see 2). Then click
O p en.
4. If necessary, enter the user name "sa" and the associated password. By default, the
password for MS SQL Server Express was set to "sa123456" (for version 4.00.0 SP2
and earlier) or "sa!123456" (for versions from 4.00.0 SP2) during the installation.
5. Click Re st o re ! to restore your backed up Across data (see 3).
6. Finally, start the Across Personal Edition and make sure that the restoring has been
successful.
To restore Across backups, the Across version of the backup data must be identical with the
currently installed Across version: for example, if you backed up the data under version 5.5
and now work with version 5.7, the data cannot be restored. This is only possible if both
versions are identical, e.g. version 5.5 in both instances.

If you experience problems re-installing Across or if you are sure that you no longer need the
Across data, you can carry out the following additional steps:
• Delete the Across-related files in the directory C: \P ro gr am Fi l es \M icr o s o f t SQ L
S erv e r. Alternatively, you can move the files to another directory.
• Go to C: \ P ro g r am F i l e s and delete the Ac r o s s folder, if one exists.
If you were interrupted while uninstalling Across, you need to remove the entries associated
with Across in the Registry Editor in H K e yLoc a lM ac hin e/ Sof t w a r e/ Ac r o s s as well
as in the individual user branches H Ke yU s e rs /x x x/ Sof t w a r e/ Ac r o s s. (xxx stands for
the Windows users.)
In order to find the entries more quickly, you can use the Registry Editor's search function to
search for the search term "Across".
Please note that using the Registry Editor incorrectly can have serious consequences for
the installed application as well as for the entire operating system. For this reason, you
should always make a backup copy of the Registry Editor before working with it. For
example, this can be done via the menu item > >R eg i st r y > > Ex po rt r egi st r y f il e. .. .

Frequently asked
questions
FAQ
The following questions and answers should assist you to answer questions regarding
installation, maintenance and usage of Across.
Further FAQs are available in the Internet at www.across.net/en/faqs.aspx.
8.1.1 General Questions
- Where can I get the latest documentation?
The latest versions of the documentation are available at www.across.net/en/documentationcenter.aspx.
- I'd like to make a suggestion: There is something missing in Across that could be
integrated.
We are looking forward to receiving your feedback!
We are interested in hearing about your ideas and including them in our plans for future
product versions. Just send us an e-mail to feedback@across.net!
- When I enter the license key for the Across Personal Edition in the designated input
field, I get a message indicating that the license is invalid. What is the problem?
If you used copy & paste to insert the license key in the input field, this often happens
because a white space before and/or after the key has also been copied. However, as the
white space is not part of the license key, an error message is displayed. Therefore, please
make sure not to copy any additional white space or remove it from the input field for the
license key.
If you entered the license key manually, i.e. by typing it in the designated field, you might
have confused an uppercase i with a lowercase L (I vs. l). The best thing to do is to insert the
license key in the input field via copy & paste.
- When inserting the license key, no context menu opens up when I click the right
mouse button. So how can I use copy & paste to insert the license key of the Across
Personal Edition in the designated input field?
True, the dialog window for entering the license key does not offer any context menu.
However, you can still insert the license key in the input field with the keyboard shortcut
Ct r l + V.
I would like to upload an intermediate state of my translation that I am processing with
the Standby Remote Client to the Across Server. How should I proceed?
You can easily upload intermediate states to the Across Server. To do so, start the Deliver
Task Wizard and select the translation task whose intermediate state you would like to
upload to the Across Server.
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

8 Appendix
In the "Close task" dialog window, deactivate the checkbox in the "Finish" column.
Otherwise, you will no longer be able to process the task after uploading it to the Across
Server.
Please note that by uploading the task to the Across Server, all paragraphs whose editing
state is "translated" will be set to "locked". Henceforth, these paragraphs will be displayed as
read-only and can no longer be processed. Therefore, you should upload the task only if you
are sure that you no longer need to edit the paragraphs with the editing state "translated".
8.1.2 Installation and Maintenance
8.1.2.1
Installation
- Which password is used during the installation of a Personal Edition for installing
the MS SQL Server Express? How is the sa password written?
The sa password is the administrator password of the SQL Server that is set to s a !1 2 3 45 6
(from v4.00.0 SP2) or s a 1 23 4 56 (prior to v4.00.0 SP2) by default during the installation of
the SQL Server.
- I have a Mac. Can I run the Across Personal Edition on my computer?
The Across Personal Edition is a Windows application that only runs on Windows operating
systems. However, it is possible to install virtualization software like Oracle VirtualBox,
Parellels Desktop, or VMware Fusion on a Mac computer. With such software, you can
create virtual machines (VM). Unlike hard-based physical machines, virtual machines exist in
the form of virtual hardware. On such a VM, you can install the Windows operating system
as well as software like the Across Personal Edition.
- On how many computers may I install the Across Personal Edition?
You are permitted to install the Across Personal Edition on two computers, e.g. on a desktop
computer and on a laptop, e.g. to be able to use Across on the road. However, please note
that the Across Personal Edition is a single-workplace application that is not designed for
distributed installation on two computers. Therefore, be sure the synchronize the Across data
between the two installations (see below).
- I would like to install the Across Personal Edition on two computers. Is this
possible? How can I best synchronize the data between the two computers?
The Across Personal Edition is a single-workplace application that is not designed for
distributed installation on two computers. Nevertheless, you can install the Across Personal
Edition on two computers and exchange the Across data between the two installations.
However, this data exchange must be performed manually.
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

When exchanging data between the two Across installations, the procedure depends on
whether you would like to exchange your personal Across data of the Across Standalone
Personal Edition and/or data of the Across Standalone Remote Client:
Data Exchange with the Across Standalone Personal Edition
For the exchange of data between the two installations, you can use the import and export
functions of crossTerm (terminology data) and crossTank (translation memory data). You
can also use the backup tool of the Personal Edition to back up the data of the one
installation and restore them to the other one. The advantage of this approach is that all
Across data are transmitted: Apart from the terminology and TM, data such as the created
projects, relations, etc. are also backed up and restored.
Please note that you need to repeat the manual transmission of data between the two
computers whenever the Across data (terminology, TM, projects, etc.) have changed on one
of the computers.
Proceed as follows to synchronize the data between the two installations:
The crossGoodies feature the P EB a ck u p R e st o reT ool for backing up and restoring
data. You can find the tool in the \ cr o s sG o o d i e s\ B ac ku p +R es t o re _ P E subdirectory
of the Across installation folder (e.g. C: \ Pr og ra m F i le s\ Ac r os s).
Run the P EB a ck u p R e st o r eT o o l. e xe application by means of a double-click. Then click
Br o w se .. . in order to determine a storage location and a name for the file containing the
backup. (Please do not use the Across installation directory as storage location for the
backup.) Then click O p en .
Enter the user name "sa" and the associated password. By default, the password for MS
SQL Server Express was set to "sa123456" (for version 4.00.0 SP2) or "sa!123456" (for
versions from 4.00.0 SP2) during the installation.
Now click Bac ku p ! to execute the tool.
All data of the Across databases (projects, translation memory, terminology data, etc.) will be
written to the file you specified.
Please note that the two installations of the Personal Edition must be installed with the same
license key, in the same version, and with the same patch level.
Copy the backup file to the computer with the second Across installation and start the
P EB a ck u p R e st o r eT ool. e xe utility on this computer. Go to the R e st o r e ! tab and
select the backup file by clicking B ro w s e. ...
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

Please note that in this way, you can only restore the backup of your Across Standalone
Personal Edition. Data backed up from the Across Standalone Remote Client cannot be
restored on your second computer with the P EB a ck u pRe st o r eT ool (see below).
If these are part of the backup, please deactivate all check boxes except for "PE databases"
(see figure below).
Click Re st o re ! to restore the backup.
Finally, start the Across Personal Edition and make sure that the data migration has been
successful.
Data Exchange with the Across Standalone Remote Client
The exchange of Across data that you process within the scope of tasks assigned to you by
an external customer must take place via the Across Server of the respective customer.
To do this, upload the current status of your tasks to the Across Server of the respective
customer(s). Then download the tasks on the second computer.
Please note that after downloading the tasks to the new computer, you can no longer upload
the tasks from the old computer to the respective Across Server. (You will only be able to do
this after uploading all tasks from the new computer to the respective Across Server.)
After you upload the data package containing the tasks assigned to you from your first
computer to the Across Server, it is usually not processed or updated by the responsible
project manager. This means that the translation itself has the status that you uploaded, but
that the data package does not contain the crossTank entries you uploaded to the Across
Server. If you want to use the translations that you have already made for the further
processing of the task on your second computer, open the task and select the menu item
> >F il e > > St o r e F i n i sh ed T r an s lat ion s t o c r os sT ank .. .. In this way, all
paragraphs with the final editing state (e.g. "translated" in the case of a translation) will be
stored to crossTank, enabling you to use the translation for the further processing of the
task.
- I have a new computer and need to migrate the data of my Across Personal Edition
to the new computer. What is the best way to do this?
When migrating the Across data of your Across Personal Edition to a computer, the
procedure depends on whether you would like to migrate your personal Across data of the
Across Standalone Personal Edition and/or data of the Across Standalone Remote Client:
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition

"sa!123456" (for versions from 4.00.0 SP2) during the installation. (You can always change
the password in the Management Studio of the SQL Server; see
ftp://ftp.across.net/vera/sapasswordchange.jpg.)
Now click Bac ku p ! to execute the tool.
All data of the Across databases (projects, translation memory, terminology data, etc.) will be
written to the file you specified.
Then install the Personal Edition on the new PC, using the same license key as on the old
computer.
Be sure to install the same version and patch level of the Personal Edition on the new
computer as on the old computer. (If necessary, you can request the patch from us.)
Then copy the backup file to the new computer and run the

- Does Across overwrite other existing databases during the installation?
When installing Across you have the possibility to use existing SQL Server installations.
In this case, Across will not overwrite existing databases, but merely create additional
database. (When reinstalling Across, the existing Across databases can be used or deleted.)
8.1.2.2
Updates and Patches
- What is a patch? Why do I need a patch?
A patch corrects errors that were only found and corrected after a version was released. The
patch replaces faulty files in your Across installation, thereby making sure that the system is
always up to date.
The latest patches are available at www.across.net/en/download-center.aspx.
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition
29
8 Appendix
A patch must always be run as administrator and with the Across application switched off.
- How do I receive the latest patches?
To get the latest patches, go to www.across.net/en/download-center.aspx or send an
informal e-mail to info@across.net so that we can inform you by e-mail whenever new
patches are released. If you have an update agreement, you are also entitled to update to a
new version.
8.1.2.3
Data Backup
- How do I back up the data of my Across Personal Edition? How can I restore my
backup?
The crossGoodies feature the P EB a ck u p R e st o reT o o l for backing up and restoring
data. To use the tool, please follow the instructions contained in the folder of the tool. You
will find the tool in the \ c ro ss G ood ie s \B ac ku p +R est or e _ P E directory of the Across
folder (e.g. C: \ Pr og ra ms \ Ac r os s).
If you use the Personal Edition as a Standby Client (for connecting with an Across Server),
you can use this tool for backing up these data, too.
Further information on backing up the Across Personal Edition is available in the chapter on
page 18.
8.1.2.4
Uninstalling Across
- How do I completely uninstall Across?
You can uninstall Across like any other Windows program via > > St a rt > >Co n t rol P an el
> > P ro g r am s an d F ea t ur es or > >C o n t ro l Pa n el > > Ad d o r R em o v e
P ro g r am s. However, we recommend uninstalling Across with the set up. e xe utility that
you already used for the installation. This utility removes the actual program as well as the
program folders and registry entries. In order to uninstall Across completely, you should
uninstall the Personal Edition and the database SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (or Microsoft
SQL Server 2005 Express with older Across installations). You can uninstall the SQL Server
via > > St a rt > >Co n t ro l P an el > >P ro g r a ms a n d F eat u r e s or > > Co n t r o l P an el
> > Ad d o r Re mo v e Pr o g r am s.
Please note that the data you have stored in Across are no longer available after this
process has been carried out!
Further information on uninstalling Across is available in the chapter starting on page 20.
8.1.3 Technical Questions
- My login screen does not display everything.
The login screen consists of an active HTML window, i.e. a window in which scripts are run.
Please check whether virus scanners or other programs are blocking the execution of these
scripts. If this does not solve the problem, please check the version of your Internet Explorer.
Across requires Internet Explorer version 8.0, 9.0 or 10.0.
- I have installed Across on a computer with Windows 8 and am now unable to start
Across, as Windows 8 no longer has the start menu. How can I start Across?
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition
30
8 Appendix
In Windows 8, the start menu that used to exist in previous Windows versions has been
replaced with the metro start screen. One way to access this start screen is to use the
Windows key on your keyboard. The start screen consists of tiles that have been assigned
various functions. During the installation of Across, one of these tiles is automatically
associated with Across. Therefore, you can simply start Across via this tile.
- Many of the dialogs seem to be too small for the font used. Some of the dialogs are
not completely displayed and buttons are also missing. It all looks a bit strange. What
is the reason for this?
The only font used in Across is "Arial Unicode MS“. Please check your fonts folder to ensure
that this font exists and that it is around 20 MB in size. If in doubt, please re-install this font.
In addition to this, do not run Windows with the function "large fonts“.
- What is the "Arial Unicode MS" font needed for?
"Arial Unicode MS (Standard)" contains the characters of nearly all character sets used
throughout the world. This guarantees that in addition to the Across interface, documents
can be displayed correctly in nearly any language (including documents in Arabic or Asian
languages). It is absolutely necessary that this font is correctly installed.
Across also uses Arial Unicode MS (standard) as an alternative font whenever the document
to be translated contains a font that is not installed on your operating system.
- Why are the keys sequences (e.g., in the menu commands) displayed in a mixture of
languages?
This behavior is controlled by the keyboard layout and by the language of the operating
system. If you use an English operating system, a German Across desktop and select the
Spanish keyboard layout, it is possible that the shortcut keys are displayed in a mixture of
languages. The same applies if, in the case of server installations, the language of the
Across Server is different from that of the language of the Across Client.
- Can I use OpenOffice applications instead of Microsoft applications?
OpenOffice cannot be used with Across. Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files can only be
processed in Across if an MS Office version is installed (2000 or higher).
- When I want to export a processed task in the form of a CRU file in my function as
external translator, I am requested to specify a package version. What does this
mean? Which package version should I choose?
Among other things, the package version depends on the version of the Across database of
the Across Server. In other words, it indicates the level of the database of the Across Server.
By selecting the correct package version, you can ensure that all data of your Across version
are compatible with the database of the Across Server. As there is no direct contact between
your client and the Across Server when using crossWAN classic, the project manager on the
Across Server side must inform you (e.g. by e-mail) of the package version of the database
of the Across Server. He can check the package version under >>Help >>About Across....
- When I start my Across Personal Edition, I get an error message about compressed
databases. How can I solve this problem?
To save storage space, Windows enables the compression of individual files, folders or
entire hard-disk drives. (The compressed files is displayed in blue in Windows Explorer.)
However, the SQL databases that Across uses for storing data do not support this
compression. If your SQL databases are compressed (through compression of the hard disk
Administrator Manual Across Personal Edition
31
8 Appendix
containing the databases or of the files or the folder of the databases), you need to undo the
compression in order to be able to use Across. To do this, deactivate the corresponding
option in the properties of the compressed drives or in the advanced properties of the
compressed files or folder.
- My Across Personal Edition currently uses MS SQL Server 2005 Express. Can I
upgrade to SQL Server version 2008 R2 Express?
Besides MS SQL Server 2005 Express, the Across Personal Edition also supports MS SQL
Server 2008 R2 Express and MS SQL Server 2012 Express. Therefore, you can upgrade the
SQL Server. Information on this subject is available on the Microsoft website (e.g.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-de/library/ms144267.aspx) and elsewhere.
Please note that the SQL Server upgrade is not covered by the warranty or support of
Across Systems GmbH. Please contact the Microsoft support if you have any questions or
problems in connection with the SQL Server upgrade.
- When starting Across, I am asked for an sa password? What does this mean? And
how can I solve the problem?
The sa password is the administrator password of the SQL Server that is set to s a !1 2 3 45 6
(from v4.00.0 SP2) or s a 1 23 4 56 (prior to v4.00.0 SP2) by default during the installation of
the SQL Server.
If the SQL password query appears when starting Across, please check the following items:
1. Please first check whether the service of the SQL Server has been started. To do this,
open the Windows service manager, e.g. via > > St a rt > > Co n t r o l P an e l
> > Ad m in i st r at iv e T oo ls > > Se rv i c es. The service of the SQL Server is usually
called "SQL Server (ACROSS)". Start the service if is not active.
Please also make sure that the service is started automatically. In the service properties,
you can determine that the service is to be started automatically. If the service is not
started automatically, you need to start it manually every time your computer is rebooted.
2. If the service is active, please enter the password sa ! 12 3 45 6 (from v4.00.0 SP2) or
sa 1 23 4 56 (prior to v4.00.0 SP2).
3. Should the sa password query continue to appear, please check the communication
between Across and the SQL Server is blocked by antivirus or firewall software. Perhaps
the settings have been modified by an antivirus update. If necessary, briefly disable the
antivirus or firewall software to check whether the communication works afterwards.
4. Check if the SQL Server databases are compressed. To save storage space, Windows
enables the compression of individual files, folders or entire hard-disk drives. (The
compressed files is displayed in blue in Windows Explorer.) However, the SQL
databases that Across uses for storing data do not support this compression. If your SQL
databases are compressed (through compression of the hard disk containing the
databases or of the files or the folder of the databases), you need to undo the
compression in order to be able to use Across. To do this, deactivate the corresponding
option in the properties of the compressed drives or in the advanced properties of the
compressed files or folder.
5. Should the sa password query continue to appear, please contact our support desk (see
page 5).
