DESET LET FESTIVALA FRONT@
Leta 2006 smo v zavodu Flota začeli uresničevati utopično idejo o mednarodnem festivalu sodobnega plesa na severovzhodnem robu
države, v bližini treh meja in daleč od velikih kulturnih centrov. Prekmurje in obmejne pokrajine Avstrije, Madžarske in Hrvaške so
Demokratizacija, decentralizacija,
vključenost, dostopnost in druge velike besede iz dokumentov kulturnih politik so se skozi eno najbolj »norih« umetniških smeri
prelile v prakso.
In 2006, Flota embarked on the realisation of a utopian idea – an international festival of contemporary dance in the north-eastern
corner of the country, close to three state borders and away from large centres of culture. Prekmurje, and the border regions of Austria,
Hungary and Croatia present a vast area where contemporary dance has been anything but familiar to the local audiences.
As it turned out, Murska Sobota, a town with 13,000 inhabitants, was an excellent choice for a festival venue. The foundation of Front@
Festival marks the beginning of an important process which undermines the prejudice that contemporary dance is an aspect of some
elite culture. Democratisation, decentralization, integration, accessibility and other big words from the documents on cultural policies
actually became flesh and blood through one of the “craziest” art genres. People living on the periphery of four countries encountered
contemporary dance in the street. Ever since 2006, in late summer the town of Murska Sobota transforms into an important European
centre of contemporary dance. Furthermore, the festival can be considered responsible for the formation of a network of dance groups
from Austria, Hungary, Croatia, the UK and Slovenia, with several other partners across Europe. The participation in the Beyond Front@
network – whose programme has been co-funded by the European Union several times – exceeded the most utopian expectations from
2006. Front@ Festival is solid proof that centres of culture can thrive at the ‘periphery’.
Other than bringing the works of artists from Austria, France, Hungary, Croatia, Spain and the USA,
the programme of this year’s tenth Front@ edition provides a small platform for the most prominent Slovenian artists in the field of
contemporary dance. Once again, the festival events will be held outdoors and at most peculiar venues – for instance, in a lobby and a
coffee shop.
As usual, the festival will provide an overview of the future of contemporary dance: in addition to young dancers selected at the
competition of short dance pieces OPUS 1, there will also be a presentation of dance schools and academies from Austria, Croatia and
Slovenia.
This year, Front@ will for the first time be held in September. The reason behind such a decision is to bring dance closer to a young
audience – i.e., the pupils and students from Murska Sobota and Ljutomer schools. For several young spectators this will be their first
contact with contemporary dance.
Thanks to all our supporters. A special thanks to all volunteers and collaborators whose efforts have kept the struggle for art dance in
the periphery going for ten years. Sometimes it feels as if it was Front@ against the windmills.

Festival’s Artistic Director

Vznemirljivi prelet skozi svetovno zgodovino sodobnega plesa!
An exciting overview of the international history of contemporary dance!
With a modern take on the subject by the excellent international dance company EnKnapGroup, this visual and musical experience
evolves into a genuine dance adventure. The performance is an internationally-oriented sequel and upgrade of the original didactic
dance hit Beware, Dance attended in Slovenia by about 10,000 spectators, and for which its author, Iztok Kovač, received the Zupančič
Award.
Kratke replike in dialogi, izvrstna glasba Tomaža Groma in ilustracije tandema nejaaka
ustvarjajo radoživ in pester svet duhovitih živalic.
Interactive dance performance for the youngest audiences.
The performance is based on the motifs of the quasi-folk children’s song Huda Mravljica which is given a new, different ending – as often
happens in folk tradition. Playful ants constantly teased by Ant Ferocious build a story through circus elements, various children’s
plays and the distinctive dance language of Iztok Kovač. Short replies and dialogues, extraordinary music by Tomaž Grom and
illustrations by the nejaaka duo create a cheerful and vivacious world of witty animals. They are at their happiest when children join
them on stage.

Gib in glas naseljujeta človekovo telo in v njem sobivata.
in sobivanja. Kako dojemamo in doživljamo drug drugega? Kakšne spremembe povzročijo v nas trenutki popolne koncentracije, ko vse,
kar je bilo pred tem in kar bo za tem, popolnoma izgine?
Move and voice inhabit and co-exist in the human body.
In the performance MOMENTUM – Avenue of Captured Moments, the author, Maša Kagao Knez, pursues her exploration of both her own
and her community’s existence and cohabitation. How do we perceive and experience each other? What changes do moments of
absolute concentration – when everything that existed before and will exist afterwards completely disappears – trigger in us?

Brutalna iskrenost. Rosana in Gregor.
[so]delovanje koreografskega para, in v slovenski sodobni ples že vrsto let vnašajo svojevrsten pečat in gibalni izraz. Edinstvenost v
erosom.
Brutal honesty. Rosana and Gregor. Their dance appropriates the space, grabs it by the neck in a way that leaves behind sweat in the air
and a lump in the abdomen.
The Duet series by Rosana Hribar and Gregor Luštek are designed as a performance about life that reveals insights into the intimate
and professional (co)operation of the choreographic couple and are introducing an original mark and movement expression. The
uniqueness of the choreography and the emotional charge create an original dance language that no longer requires external
justification in the duet 16, as it constantly blurs the self-set boundaries between the personal and private, between language and
speech, between physics and chemistry, between emotion and eros.

preizpraševanje sodobnih dogm, povezanih z lepoto in izobraževanjem. Razorujoče neposredno, smešno in osebno srečanje
‘starodobnega’ besedila in jezika sodobnega performansa.
Humour and virtuosity plus a critical view of contemporary dance.
In the hands and in the body of a single performer, a 1950s Hungarian ballroom dance manual becomes a tool for questioning today’s
dogmas surrounding beauty and education. A disarmingly straightforward, funny and personal meeting of a vintage text and a
contemporary performance language.

A three-part choreography was designed at the Dramaturgical Practicum. The first part is focused on the interaction between
movement on the ground and standing up, the second explores the movement of a mechanical puppet, while the third combines all
the elements in an entity. The dance was created through improvised movements of the students.

Hipnotični ples o raziskovanju harmonije in naključja.
Uro dolgo
skupinsko delo, opremljeno z glasbo Clare Rockmore, ponuja ostre, surove in turbulentne gibalne strukture, ki jih plesalci utelešajo

Rockmore’s music, offers a playlist of edgy, raw and turbulent movement structures embodied by dancers’ physicality and performative
endurance. students of harmony continues the formal research entitled Equalizing, a movement system developed by Ferlin for The Other
At The Same Time, his most recent group piece.

Vsaka lovska akcija terja koncentracijo, pozornost, izničenje samega sebe, zlitje z okoljem in prisluškovanje notranjim (telesnim) in
zunanjim vzgibom.
A high-resolution dance performance which tackles universal themes of the human condition with a great deal of subtlety and
humour.
Each hunting action requires concentration, attention and self-annihilation, blending in to the environment and listening to internal
(bodily) and external impulses. All it takes to quickly release the tension to trigger a swift act to catch the hunted. The principle of
hunting is internalised, but outwardly it serves as the “clashing” among the dancers, whilst inhale-exhale-freeze-action-reaction are
effectively the connective tissues of the performance. The meditative, humorous and sensual signatures of individual dancers emerge
through the concentration and release of tension which reveals the role of an individual in a group – and a group within an individual –
as a part of human life in a community or as a process showing us images of our insanity, egoism, vulnerability, hope.

Fokus improvizacijskega dela bo sprotno utelešanje imaginacije.
Dance communication Lab – DCL is part of the program of Beyond Front@ network, a European network of dance organisations. DCL’s
aim is to connect artists from the field of contemporary dance and to test opportunities for cooperation through improvisation, which
is the most distinctive process of creation in contemporary dance.
Focus of DCL will be embodiment of imagination. While working, dancers will play with transiton between 3 different “codes”: 1.
embodiment of fiction (creating a fiction world with embodiment), 2. reaction on actual stage situation (here and now, exit, comment),
3. focus on actual doing.
Key working elements will be intentions and acting/operating – what dancers are causing with their doing in the performing space and
how this effects them.

Ples ob koncu sveta. Človeško, lepo in grozljivo obenem.
Iz globin srednjega veka predstavlja Nenavadnosti sodoben odgovor na »Vrt zemeljskih naslad« slikarja Hieronymusa Boscha.
Mestoma pošastno in mestoma groteskno telo performerke Maxence Rey uteleša alkimijo med temo in upanjem, med človeškim in
živalskim. To čudno podzemlje naseljujeta še dve skrivnostni prezenci – oblikovalec zvoka Vincent Brédif in oblikovalec svetlobe Cyril
Leclerc. Kaj, če so liki stopili z Boschevega platna in se pojavili pred nami?
Dance at the end of the world; so human, beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
From the depths of the Middle Ages, Curiosities presents a contemporary response to Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights.
The sometimes monstrous, sometimes grotesque body of a performer Maxence Rey embodies the alchemical relationship between
darkness and hope, human and animal. Two other enigmatic presences – sound designer Vincent Brédif and light designer Cyril Leclerc
– inhabit this strange underworld. What if the characters descended from Bosch’s paintings and appeared before us?

Gibanje prevzame vlogo govora, ko jezik postane nerazumljiv. Razprava se nadaljuje. Še bolj ostra, utrudljiva, predvsem pa bolj smešna …
Parloir is a duo danced by a couple of an incomprehensible language, a clinch of formidable virtuosity.
A woman and a man speak to each other. They communicate with words we cannot understand, with their own language. The verbal
exchange runs its course (from tenderness to anger, from listening to fleeing), the meaning escapes us but the tense and relaxing
moments give us clues on the couple.
The movement takes over from speech in the unspeakable. The debate goes on. More arduous, more exhausting, and especially more
ridiculous…
ples.
The annual themes are meant to stimulate critical thinking about specific issues and provide the performers opportunities to learn
about, research and study specific topics or dance artists. This year’s theme encourages young dance artists to seek the motive for
creating their dance pieces in visual works of art and/or their authors. Visual works of art should serve as inspiration to avoid the
established norms of creation and presentation. They should induce a broadening of choreographic imagination and stimulate
considerations regarding all that dance can be.

A combination of the organic forms with strength and energy, rising from fresh emotional registers.
A Place To Bury Strangers is a starting point, a way back home to what each one might consider essential. The passages of the show have
to do with turning points of life and quite possibly any other person can recognize in their own experience: an amazing journey into
fears, anxieties and insecurities, but also into hopes, dreams and the utopian search for spiritual liberation with which modern man is
confronted. It speaks about the difficulties of confronting society, about finding the place where we belong.

Stevea Reicha.
A chorus of women are borne from the movements of a single dancer in this dreamlike pas de trente-deux.
In the tradition of Marey and McLaren, Michael Langan and Terah Maher combine music, dance, and image multiplication to create a
film that enhances our perception of motion. Choros delivers a visually mesmerizing narrative in three movements, following a dancer’s
(Maher) experience of discovery, euphoria, and rebirth through this surreal phenomenon. Featuring music from Steve Reich’s “Music
for 18 Musicians.”

Laboratorij Kdo, zakaj, kaj, kako? dela počasi.
vsebino (analiza in dramaturgija), tretja se vrti okrog uprizoritvenih strategij, postopkov in principov ter četrta – delo na predstavi.
V trenutni, tretji fazi Kako?
Laboratory Who, why, what, how? works slowly. It is a 3-year process in four phases: the first dealt with the performative arts and the
second with the contents (analysis and dramaturgy), third revolves around performing strategies, procedures and principles and fourth
– working on a performance.
In the current, third stage named How? (staging) Lab team deals with Milan Kundera’s novel Slowness with the focus on the question:
How to stage the chosen content?
At festival Front@, the Lab team will present 5th edition of public presentations – sketch, which will focus on duration – time, the main
theme of Slowness. The novel takes place during the evening, through the night and ends the next morning when the sun rises, such
will also be duration of Sketch 5.
