Facility History
Hayward Field Facility Specifications
At the heart of Eugene’s successful bids for the 2008,
2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and the 2010,
2013, 2014 and 2015–2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor
Track & Field Championships, Hayward Field is the
nation’s most impressive track and field venue. And
there is no place on earth like Track Town USA.
The 2010 NCAA Championships extended the historic
venue’s legacy of magical performances, heart-stopping
moments and records. An NCAA record 45,847
spectators packed the stands to witness the drama, joy
and tears.
Named for Bill Hayward, who coached the University of
Oregon’s men’s team from 1904–1947, Hayward Field
was initially constructed for football in 1919. Two years
later, a six-lane cinder track was installed and track
events were transferred from Kincaid Field on the
opposite edge of campus.
Hayward Field’s iconic east grandstand was constructed
in 1925. Many of the sport’s most decorated athletes
have experienced the thrill of shaking hands with the
faithful fans of the east grandstand on a victory lap.
With the construction of Autzen Stadium in 1967,
Hayward Field became dedicated solely to the sport of
track and field. The University updated the venerable
facility in 2007 with an $8.0 million renovation that
installed stadium lighting, a state-of-the-art video board,
and a new infield. The track was resurfaced and the West
grandstand renovated during the Summer of 2011.

wear an official team uniform with components
governed by these rules or be subject to
disqualification. Wearing any part of the official team

e) Additional
visible

f) The use of, or wearing of, artificial
noisemakers by competitors is prohibited.
Note: Individual or team uniform, logo, number and
shoe rules shall be enforced through inspection by the
clerk or the head field event official at initial event
check-in. Violators shall be warned, given the chance
to correct the violation, and reported to the referee. A
report of uncorrected violations shall be made to the
referee and offending competitor’s coach.
