Growing Peppers Hot and Not So Hot in Greenhouses and High Tunnels
by Dr. Mohyuddin Mirza—Sponsored By TGP The Grocery People
Did you know that at least 80% of the flowers produced by peppers abort
and you have to work very hard to keep the other 20% of the flowers for
developing fruits? Peppers are among the three most commonly grown
greenhouse vegetables, alongside cucumbers and
tomatoes.
It takes peppers 120 days after seeding to
begin producing and start contributing to your
cash flow. Dr. Mirza will go through the step by
step production of peppers, the importance of
good environmental controls and discuss the challenges of diseases and insects.
Dr. Mirza will discuss how demographic changes in populations are influencing
consumer demand for new varieties of peppers. For example, hot peppers are becoming
popular. Hot peppers need different pruning practices compared to large peppers.
Dr. Mirza will also share with you pictures of peppers grown in hanging baskets.

“Brand It!” by Jill Sauter
When most business owners think about brands, they think of McDonalds
or Nike. Why would a small business invest in a brand? The truth is, whether
you’re creating it or not, you have a brand – a reputation with past, current and
future customers. In the days when information and opinions fly like snowflakes,
businesses need to know what their brand is, what it is doing for them, and how to
manage or change it. Even without a Coca Cola budget, small businesses can
create a strong brand that will add value to their bottom line. Jill Sauter will explain brands
and provide examples of brands from small businesses like yours. Jill will share her
experience building brands for companies and provide practical tips to help you start
building your own brand.

whether they are Tulips, Narcissi, Liatris, Calla or, the most popular, Lilies.

is always something new that can attract customers and make even the most
amateur gardener successful. Whether customers look for size, colours, simplicity, or even

Lyzette Johnston on Domestic Food Safety Systems—Webinar
The passage of the Safe Food for Canadians Act in November 2012 set the
stage for important changes to Canada's food safety system. Once in force, the Act
will consolidate food safety authorities from four different acts: Canada Agricultural
Products Act; Fish Inspection Act; Meat Inspection Act; and Food-related provisions
of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act. This will enable the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency (CFIA) to apply consistent regulatory requirements and inspection approaches across all
regulated food commodities.
Over the last two-years the CFIA has undertaken extensive efforts to engage and seek
stakeholder feedback to inform the development of the proposed Safe Food for Canadians
Regulation. You will be provided with an overview of the proposed requirements that could be
contained in the new regulation.
