Hudhud triggered heavy downpour in the region.
One person was killed when the compound wall of a

Meanwhile, Pakistani troops heavily shelled 15 border
outposts (BOPs) and hamlets along the International Border

Countdown for IRNSS
1C launch tomorrow
Chennai, Oct 12 (PTI):
The countdown for the launch of
India’s navigation satellite IRNSS
1C, the third of seven satellites in
the series to put in place India’s
navigation
system on par with US’ Global Positioning System, on board PSLV C
26 will commence at the spaceport
of Sriharikota tomorrow.
The earlier planned launch on October six was postponed following a
technical problem.
The 67-hour countdown for the mission will commence at 0632 hrs IST
on October 13, ISRO said.
IRNSS 1C with a lift-off mass of
1,425.4 kg would be launched on the
28th flight of India’s PSLV-C26 from
the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at
Sriharikota, some 100 km from here.
Like the launch of similar missions of
IRNSS 1A and IRNSS 1B earlier, this
mission would be launched on the XL
version of the PSLV.
As part of its aspirations to build a
regional navigational system equivalent to Global Positioning System of
the US, ISRO plans to send seven
satellites to put in place the Indian
Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS).
The first two satellites in the series, IRNSS 1A and IRNSS 1B

PepsiCo’s India revenue
grows in double digits
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
PepsiCo India’s revenue grew in double digits for nine months ended
September 6, 2014 making the country amongst the fastest growing
emerging markets for the global beverages and snack giant.
Our developing and emerging markets business has proven to be resilient
with high single-digit organic revenue growth year-to-date, including doubledigit growth in Egypt and India, PepsiCo Inc Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi
said in an earnings call.
Even though the political environments are
relatively stable, GDP and consumer spending
growth remains mixed. Despite these challenges,
our businesses performed well in the third quarter
and year-to-date, she added.
Other developing markets for the company such
as China, Brazil and Turkey recorded high single
digit growth while revenue in Russia grew in mid single-digit.
During the third quarter ended September 6, 2014 PepsiCo’s
Asia Middle East and Africa (AMEA) region reported 11 per cent growth
in organic revenue and net revenue.
It was driven by 11 per cent volume growth in snacks and 3 per cent
volume growth in beverages.
Globally, PepsiCo reported organic revenue growth of 3.1 per cent and
net revenue growth of 2 per cent in the third quarter.
PepsiCo has termed India as high priority market. In November 2013,
PepsiCo said it will invest Rs 33,000 crore in India by 2020 to ramp up
operations. The company said the investment will be utilised to strengthen
its capability in various strategic areas including innovation, manufacturing,
infrastructure and agriculture.
India has been one of the top five markets of PepsiCo and it has eight
brands which clock turnover of over Rs 1,000 crore in the market. The
company has 42 plants across India and apart from cold drinks like Pepsi,
7UP, Mirinda and Mountain Dew, it sells snacks under brands such as
Lehar, Uncle Chipps and Kurkure.

CSL receives ‘in principle’
approval for drydock
Kochi, Oct 12 (PTI):
Cochin Shipyard (CSL) has received ‘in principle’ approval of the
Shipping Ministry for the construction of a large drydock which is
estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore.
The company intends to raise capital to meet its expansion plans
through a judicious mix of debt and equity options, a CSL press
release said.
To maintain the growth momentum, CSL has identified projects
for expansion in the short, medium and long term.
The yard has identified considerable potential in the ship repair

EPFO to launch online
PF transfer for PF trusts
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
Retirement fund body EPFO is all
set to launch this month an online
facility for transfer of PF accounts
for the organised sector workers
covered under private PF trusts,
that manage their employees’
retirement
fund themselves.
The EPFO has planned to launch
the facility of online transfer of PF
account from private PF trusts to
un-exempted firms which are filing
PF returns and vice-versa, this
month, a Labour Ministry offi cial
said.
At present this facility is available
to workers of (un-exempted) firms
which do not have their PF trusts
and manage their employees’
accounts with their respective
regional fund commissioners of the
EPFO. It was launched in October
last year.
There are 3,621 private provident
fund trusts (PPFT) which are
managing the accounts as well as
retirement fund of their workers.
These trusts are regulated by the
EPFO.
According the official, the EPFO
has developed a mechanism by
which PF accounts can be transfered
online from an un-exempted firm to
exempted organisation (PPFT).
There were certain technical
issues for online transferring of PF
accounts on changing jobs from a
PPFT to an un-exempted firm.
Now since the EPFO has
almost completed the work on
the mechanism to enable transfer

of PF accounts from a private PF
trust to an un-exempted firm and
vice-versa, the facility could be
launched anytime this month, the
official added.
There are over five crore active
subscribers whose accounts are
being managed by EPFO. But
these are all un-exempted firms
which don’t operate a trust and file
provident fund returns with EPFO.
The facility of online transfer of
provident fund accounts is aimed
at reducing the work load of the
body substantially as over 13 lakh
applicants fi le such claims every
year.
The EPFO settled 1.21 crore
claims in 2013-14, including about
12 lakh PF transfer claims.

Cook takes
a dig at KP
London, Oct 12 (PTI):
Denying Kevin Pietersen’s claims
that a bullying culture had flourished
in the England dressing room in recent years, captain Alastair Cook
says the maverick cricketer’s controversial autobiography has ‘tarnished’
one of the most successful eras for
the national team.
‘I’m very proud of that era we
played in to win
three Ashes series and become
the best side in
the world. I only
have fond memories of that, but
I do believe it’s
kind of been tarnished and I’m
sad about that,’
Cook told ‘BBC’.
‘I think it’s been a really sad week
for cricket. We have to draw a line
under it at some stage and this is a
good time,’ the 29-year-old said.
The release of ‘KP: The Autobiography’ this week has been accompanied by controversy with former and
current players either backing or criticising the former batsman’s claims in
the book.
Pietersen’s international career effectively ended in February when his
central contract with the England and
Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was terminated.
He scored 8,181 runs at an average of 47 in 104 Tests and captained
England in three Tests.
A ‘hurt’ Cook denied that a bullying
culture flourished in the team in recent years.
‘International cricket is a tough
place and, as a team, you’re striving
for excellence
at all times.
Certainly
at
some stages
those frustrations
boiled
over more than
they
should
have done, but

the other 10 blokes around were
committed 100 per cent to it also.
‘Did it overstep the mark a couple
of times? Possibly, but we addressed
those issues. That’s what happens in
teams, but it certainly wasn’t a bullying environment as such,’ Cook said.
Cook also did not agree with Pietersen’s views about former coach
Andy Flower.
‘I’ve known Andy since he was a
player in the Essex dressing room.

Indian skipper praises Raina after levelling ODI series
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
Despite staging a remarkable recovery act to level the series, India
captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was
not at all satisfied with his team’s effort as he feels that there are ‘few
things missing’ in their game and the
boys need to ‘pull up their socks.’
‘We have not played to our potential. I feel quite a few things are missing. We have to pull our socks up.
This game is a crucial eye opener for
us. We are on the winning side, but
we could have lost this,’ Dhoni said
on a cautious note at the post-match
presentation ceremony yesterday.
The skipper said that it was difficult
to get to 263 but they were 20 runs
short of par-score.
‘Quite difficult to get 263 but quite a
few batsmen got off to a decent start.
We lost two wickets close to the 40th
over. That was very crucial. We were
short by 20 runs because of that,’
Dhoni said.
Dhoni also seemed a bit relieved
that Virat Kohli atleast had some sort
of form going his way.
‘Virat is an important character in
our team the way he bats, he got
runs today which will definitely help
him.’
The skipper was effusive in his
praise for Suresh Raina, who
showed positive intent during his innings of 62.
‘Raina batted excellently, has carried his form from the Champions
League T20. They have to convert
these starts into bigger innings.’
Dhoni reckoned that man-of-thematch Mohammed Shami used the
reverse swing to good effect despite
there being dew.
‘There was a bit of reverse swing,
he got us vital breakthroughs. Amit
Mishra’s contribution was crucial
again as he was willing to flight the
ball. Once the ball gets wet or there
is no turn, Jadeja does not flight the
ball. That is why I used Mishra more,’
Dhoni reasoned.
West Indies skipper Dwayne Bravo
was at his wits end to explain how
they lost their way as they were

pursuit of 264. ‘Thought at one point

‘Thought of early
exit spurred me’
Shanghai, Oct 12:
Roger Federer said thoughts of his near-elimination
early in the Shanghai Masters helped propel him to a
crushing victory over Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals
on Saturday.
The 33-year-old Swiss remembered that during the 6-4,
6-4 win his mind wandered to the second round when he
saved five match points against Leonardo Mayer.
‘I was thinking about it midway through the match when
I was up a set and a break going, ‘Hmm, should I be here
or elsewhere? I’m here, let’s make the most of it,’ he said.
‘I still remember how lucky I got. Clearly I feel very fortunate being in the tournament. But that’s sometimes how
things go.
It took a ‘perfect match’ by Federer for Djokovic’s
28-match winning streak in China to come to an end.
In their first match since Djokovic edged Federer to
capture his seventh Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, the
Swiss star exacted a measure of revenge with a commanding victory in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters
on Saturday.
‘He played a perfect match,’ Djokovic said. ‘Tonight is
definitely one of the best matches he has played against
me, that’s for sure.’
Federer also ended Djokovic’s 43-match overall win
streak to start the 2011 season when he beat him in the
French Open semifinals that year.
‘I look forward to the big occasions,’ Federer said.
‘Doesn’t matter where it is in the world because there’s
always a lot on the line, it’s a good story. It was the same
again tonight.’
In their last match in the Wimbledon final this summer,
Djokovic and Federer battled for five grueling, momentum-shifting sets before the Serb finally finished it off in
four hours to capture his seventh Grand Slam title.
Federer relentlessly charged the net and volleyed with
precision, winning 20 of his 35 forays. He also served

The processional deity of the Almighty at Swarna Venkateswara

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
With an aim of giving a boost to
India’s relations with Scandinavian
countries, President Pranab Mukherjee today left on a tour of Norway, the
first by the Head of State, and Finland
during which efforts will be made to
attract investment from Norway to
India.
Accompanied by Union Minister of
State for Heavy Industries and Public
Enterprises Pon Radhakrishnan, the
highlight of Pranabs’s visit to the
two nations will be that he would be
crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting
the village of Santa Claus before he
returns to India on Friday.
The focus of the visit would be work
out a mechanism for attracting investment from Norway to India in the
infrastructure sector and other areas.
At present a meagre four billion dollar

BPL category may

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
The Centre is working on a solution to
ensure that poor get benefits like free
medicines and check-ups in speciality
government hospitals on the basis of
their BPL ration cards while eliminating
income tax payers and top officials from
the ambit of PDS.
The new moves are aimed at better
targeting of subsidies which the government wants should reach the needy
and the deserving.
‘This issue is under consideration.
We are trying to find some workable
solution to ensure Below Poverty Line
(BPL) category people can avail other
facilities like free medicines with ease
on the basis of a ration card,’ says Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
He told PTI in an interview that the
poor are facing problems, especially
in those states where the new food law
has been implemented.
The Minister was asked whether the

Panel submits
report on errors
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
A three-member committee has
submitted its report on issues relating
to Hindi translation in various examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The committee under the chairmanship of Professor Purushottam
Agrawal, former member of the UPSC,
was formed following complaints of
alleged errors in Hindi translation of
questions asked in different examinations, including the prestigious civil
services examination to select IAS, IPS
and IFS among others, conducted by
the Commission, official sources said.
The details of the committee report
was not immediately known. The committee was mandated to look into various issues relating to the Hindi translation in the bilingual question papers
of various examinations conducted by
the Commission and to develop an
appropriate system, the sources said.
government will take steps to ensure
that new ration card serves as an ID
card for other benefits.
Meanwhile, the government is working on plans to take out income tax
payers and ranking officials in the
government out of the ambit of Public
Distribution System (PDS). The Modi
government has asked states to try
such a scheme and Paswan will be
discussing the issue with them.
It has also given enough signals that
the much-touted welfare food security
programme of the UPA government will
not be shelved.
In fact, plans are afoot to fine-tune the
scheme to target the beneficiaries in a
better way and address the foodgrains
entitlement, a sensitive issue raised by
states. ‘It is possible. We are thinking
on these lines. I believe that instead of
identifying poor beneficiaries, it would
be better to identify those who can be
excluded from the scheme,’ he said.
He was asked whether the government has any plans to implement the
much-discussed idea of excluding
income tax payers from the ambit of
PDS benefits.
The Minister cited the case of Madhya Pradesh government already
implementing a scheme on these lines.
‘Class I and II officers and income tax
payers are kept out of the ambit of PDS
benefits in the state. We have asked all
states to try this. I will discuss this issue
with the state governments,’ he said.
At the same time, Paswan also expressed dissatisfaction over operation
of PDS. ‘The benefit that should reach
the poor is not reaching. There are
many complaints about PDS.’
Prior to the new food security law,
ration cards served as identity cards
to the below poverty line (BPL) families
for not only getting highly subsidised
foodgrains but also government benefits meant for BPL people.
The focus of the visit would
be work out a mechanism

other areas
to 20 billion to 40 billion dollars, ‘and
we want to see how we can push that
further and with which sectors we can
do that,’ he said.
A number of agreements would be
signed during the visit which will cover
the fields of education, trade and
cooperation in several other areas
including Earth Sciences. Norway

SC raps govt
over Air India
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
With Air India grappling with financial crisis, the Supreme Court has
rapped the government for giving
‘profitable routes’ to private carriers
and asked it to plan a turnaround in
the national carrier saying it ‘faces
extinction’ if things continued like
this.
‘Why many lucrative routes have
been given to private carriers,’ a
bench comprising justices Vikramjit
Sen and Kurian Joseph observed
while expressing concern over
Air India taking a beating against
private airways, post merger of Air
India and Indian Airlines.
The bench, which wanted the Civil
Aviation Ministry to think over the
various issues plaguing the national
carrier, also said other area of concern was the priority given to private
airlines with Air India aircraft being
asked to hover around during the
peak landing hours causing huge
loss of money on fuel.
