WILDLIFE CONVERSATION SOCIETY AT ‘FRONT LINE’ OF
MOZAMBIQUE’S ELEPHANT POACHING
8 OCTOBER 2014
AACEM developing bird watching tourism
By Michaela Higgins Sørensen

Saturday’s Global March for Elephants and Rhinos highlighted the escalating crisis of elephant poaching in Mozambique. “We are losing an average
of 12 elephants per day,” says Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Alastair Nelson.
WCS, an American NGO, co-manages Mozambique’s Niassa National Reserve alongside the government. The reserve is roughly twice the size of
South Africa’s Kruger National Park and home to 70 percent of Mozambique’s estimated 17,000 elephants. Understandably, this is where a lot of
the country’s elephant poaching happens. “The Reserve is the front line
of elephant poaching at the moment,” says Nelson. “It’s as bad as it gets.”
Not all hope it lost though. WSC are working on improving law enforcement with the government, and last month WCS had major successes
with two big arrests. During one night raid with the police, they arrested
eight people and collected four hunting rifles, five AK-47’s and hundreds
of rounds of ammunition, along with 25 tusks from poached elephants.
WCS also managed to find the poachers’ notebook containing information
on the number of elephants they had killed and the amount of ivory they
had traded, with their profits reaching US$150,000 from Mozambique
alone. “It’s been run by a king pin, we have an idea of who this person is
now” reports Nelson.
“It is crucial for WCS and other conservation groups to work with the government. I believe that over time, within the next 2 to 3 years, we will
get poaching down to below the birth-rate of the elephants,” says Nelson.
“We need a completely integrated strategy of strong law enforcement of
the government of Mozambique and involvement from the community.”
One concern is that the local community does not benefit from conservation, while poaching gives them an element of financial support. For
instance, poachers work with local youths and pay 30mts to carry tusks
for them.
“We have just started a community program where we take people’s livelihoods and food security seriously,” says Nelson. “We need to remember
that these aren’t the ordinary community members who are poaching,
these are serious armed poachers that create a security threat to the people because they go into their houses and take food, and they sleep in
their beds and are heavily armed. This is an organized crime issue”.
The Elephant March has been
a huge stepping stone in raising awareness. “It is very important to be here to show
that we care because sometimes people don’t know that
things are happening,” says
Alexandra Jorge from Biofund,
who attended the March.
“[People] are shocked when
they hear that five elephants
are being killed every day. I
think once people know that, most of them would try to help by staying
alert and talking about the issues to find solutions”.
“Associação Ambiente, Conservação e Educação Moçambique” or
AACEM is a bird orientated conservation organization, set up in Maputo in March 2014. The organisation is managed by bird enthusiast
Morris Ngwenyama.
Birding for Morris’s Ngwenyama is more than just a job – it is a joy
and a passion. Having attained a Diploma in Tourism management
from the university of Cape Town, he moved to Birdlife South Africa
(a South African conservation NGO) in 2007, where his enthusiam
was recognised and he obtained a sponsorship to attend the Birdlife
guide training course at Wakkerstroom – South Africa.
In Maputo, Birdlife South Africa, has supported the transition of the
Mozambique Bird Club from a voluntary membership association of
hobbyists, into the more active and capable organization of AACEM.
By focusing on birds, and the sites and habitats on which they depend, AACEM is working to improve the quality of life of birds, biodiversity and people at key birding sites. The organisation provides
up to date information on birding sites and tours in Mozambique
and markets Mozambique’s birding assets internationally. In addition to developing birding tourism in the region, AACEM is involved
in various environmental education initiatives in Maputo Province
as well as the training of environmental educators in Mozambique.
In the future the organisation will be looking to play an increasing
role in the protection of threatened bird species and their habitats
and other conservation projects.
Mozambique’s diverse habitat serves up an astonishing array of bird
species in excellent wetland, island, estuarine and mountain locations, usually combined with superb scenery.
The recommended tour operators within Mozambique are: Birding Ecotours, Indicator Birding and Reach Africa. Emidio Sumbane
(+258825291545) an amateur bird guide, takes local and international clients out birding in some of the hot spots on their request:
Maputo wetland, Maputo city: Jardim Botanico – UEM, Maputo
Special Elephant Reserve, Eastern Swazi lebombo, Licuati forest,
Ncomati flood plains, Namaacha, Magude- Moamba.

ays are getting longer, warmer and very pleasant in Maputo.
Winding down the hectic weekend in Maputo has for years been
associated with live music hosted by café Camissa every Sunday
evening. Good and arty people meet to network, relax and enjoy the
vibe in what has become “an institution in Maputo” when it comes to
live music according to Henrique, a regular.
Now operating from new premises at Feira Popular in down town Maputo or Baixa the Camissa @ Batuke, ©asIvan
it now
wants to be known, has
Baptista
renewed itself and opened its doors again last Wednesday October
1. “We have a bigger and nicer stage here” says Esme, the proprietor,
“new here at this venue will be the coming together of amateur theatre alongside our live afro-jazz ” .
Walking in the new premises of Café Camissa one is greeted by the
pleasant arty atmosphere made special by the tastefully decorated
and handpicked furniture. Esme’s personal collection of water colours
hanging on all walls makes the place warm and full of life . “ The new
venue is vast and it gives ample opportunities for Nucleo D’Arte artists to showcase their own work” further remarks the proprietor who
hastens to say that different artist will be showcased monthly on a
rotating basis.
Camissa @ Batuke’s new location is strategically located in the heart of
Maputo baixa area, making it an ideal place for lunch, light snacks or
simply to unwind after a day’s work. Choose from their tasteful menu
of light meals or hot dishes such as Byriani rice and you will be pleasantly surprised.
The line-up for this month includes Makazani Muthimu (Rodrigues) on

hude Mondlane and Projecto Transito will be delighting us all with
their music at the American International School of Mozambique
(AISM), this Friday 10th August, in a programme entitled “Rhythm
and Motion”. They will share the stage with fellow musicians Likute and
Grupo Cultural Gwaza Muthini to raise funds for “ an investment in Mozambique’s future leaders who are committed to achieving academic success, overcoming obstacles and serving their community with pride and
integrity” according to the AISM Open Doors scholarship programme.
Projecto Transito started in early 2013 and is made up of top international
artists from Mozambique, the USA and France with a lot to offer the local
music scene as both performers and composers. What keeps the Projecto
Transito members together is their passion with traditional instruments
of various origins and the fact that they “enjoy working together” according to Chude Mondlane, daughter of a leader who himself benefited from
similar academic scholarships in the past.
Appearing on stage will also be Likute, an all-woman band that has successfully continued to work with traditional and modern rhythms and in
the process challenge in a practical way the largely male domain that is the
art of making and performing music in Mozambique.
Grupo Cultural Gwaza Muthini will showcase traditional dances from various parts of Mozambique.
This year’s “Rhythm and Motion” will be a breath of fresh air in the local efforts to mobilize resources for continued social change and empowerment
of young Mozambicans. Open Doors “promises to deliver once again spectacular entertainment from renowned Mozambican artists in an intimate
atmosphere of fun and camaraderie”. Last year’s event raised USD12000
towards the tuition fees of two Mozambican students (male and female).

HOTEL DONA ANA. BUSINESS OR PLEASURE
Vilanculos at it’s best
W
onderfully renovated, in keeping with its original design, the
historic Hotel Dona Ana is once again ready to welcome tourists and business visitors from both Mozambique and abroad.
This, the first hotel to be built on the Vilanculos mainland, is situated in
a prime position with spectacular views across the bay to the famous
Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique’s premier tourist attraction. The
area, now a conservation sanctuary, is one of the top ten dive sites in
the world and is home to a vast variety of species including the rare, protected Dugong - the mermaid of the sea.
Here you can be as active, or as lazy as you wish. Scuba dive, deep sea
fish, snorkel, take a dhow trip, climb a dune, swim with a horse, learn to
kite surf - or simply chill out. The Hotel Dona Ana offers all this and more.
With a choice of fully equipped rooms, from suites to standard, all with
sea views, a stunning cocktail lounge and a restaurant which simulates a
luxury liner, the indoor facilities are superlative. Outside you can enjoy a
drink at the pool bar, a game of volley ball, a sleep on a lounger or a walk
along the beach - which is only a few steps away. This is holiday magic!
If business is your purpose – Wi-Fi access is freely available in all public
places. There’s an 18 seater board room on site and full, modern conference facilities are just a short drive away.
The Hotel Dona Ana - a monument to timeless design and exceptional
construction, is the place to visit in Vilanculos. Whether you fly or drive the dedicated, friendly staff are waiting to welcome you.
BLUE ON BLUE AT KULUNGWANA
U
ntil 1 November Kulungwana is home to the exhibition “Blue on Blue” by Berry
Bickle and Marjorie Wallace. Yves
Klein made BLUE famous as IKB. In
May 1960, Klein deposited his patent for the paint formulation under
the name of International Klein Blue
(IKB). The numbered Monochrome
Paintings continued from 1959 to
the end of his life. His innovation was
to make the colour blue the same colour brightness and intensity as
dry pigment, saturating the process so the visual experience has no
beginning or ending as he wanted to create, in his words, “a landscape of freedom “. In 1957, the year Marjorie Wallace was born, Yves
Klein was placing blue in the void zones of the immaterial, blue as IKB
again and again and again. Graduated from Michaelis School of Art in
Cape Town, Marjorie Wallace is a talented ceramicist. She produces
fine porcelain objects inspired by the traditional baskets that remind
her of her youth, of which she scrapes, compresses and carves with
drawings and linear designs. In a country where supply and resources
are a constant problem, Marjorie Wallace opens her pottery to other
ceramists and trains young crafters.
Blues as in the musical form of rhymed narrative ballads, Berry Bickle
has struck a Blue Note and as with the musical genre that possesses
characteristics of lyrics and instruments Berry Bickle’s Blue Note is
visual narratives photographically composed. Fine layers of fabric and
diffused light are the sediment of memory wrapping the objects and
then relating them to the body placing them close to the skin, as a danger within corporal vulnerability, as feminine with masculine wrapped
in the same fate. Exploring issues of race, psychological violence, power, territory, history, memory and exile, Bickle raises questions about
submission versus control, tradition versus modernity, and the local
versus the global. By playing with subjectivity Bickle turns set ideas
upside down and appeals to our imagination and to our senses, she
touches on rituals to emphasize the meaning of principles identifying
and cementing together the members of a community. She addresses
their souls and spirits, transforming social codes into allegories of a
shared alienation, as if this process was a way to create armour that
could carry memory and transcend history.
