Due to privacy laws priests must be asked by family
members to visit parishioners in the hospital or
nursing home. Please advise us of those in need of the
Church’s ministry, whether they are homebound or
have been hospitalized. We are happy to bring the
Eucharist to those who cannot get out and attend
Mass. And if someone is ill or declining in health
the pastor is happy to come to their home, anoint
them and bring them Holy Communion.
Please call the rectory, and we will make these
arrangements for you.

FAST APPROACHING
The Tabernacle Society’s Fall Sale will be coming soon. It
will be on Saturday, November 1, from 10:30 a.m. — 2:00
p.m. (Please make note of the change in time.) We hope we
will be able to call on you for help. If you are great in the
kitchen, we’d love some goodies for our Baked Table. We
also have a Country Store Table for those who are handy
with crocheting and knitting. Anything at all that you make
by hand would be most welcome and greatly appreciated.
This year we will also be having a Jewelry Table! This is
the perfect time to re-accessorize your wardrobe! Donate
your used jewelry—it creates the perfect opportunity for
you to acquire more!! (We will be placing baskets in the
churches so you can drop off those unwanted jewels!) Our
tried and true favorites will be back this year too! We will
have a beautiful quilt to raffle off, a 50/50 raffle and our
famous chicken ‘n biscuit luncheon from 11:00 a.m. until
1:00 p.m. Our Fall Sale features a great Penny Sale as well.
We are always on the lookout for NEW or BARELY
USED treasures you may want to donate. We will let you
know in future bulletins when to drop off these items.
We deeply appreciate your past support and generosity. We
could not do it without your help. As you know the money
we raise goes toward the care and beautification of our
church altars, and the liturgical needs of the priest and
parish. Please mark your calendars and come join us for
lunch and a great day of shopping!

HONDURAS HUMANITARIAN TRIP
FEBRUARY 2015
Barry and Doreen Brado (603-837-9213)
In February 2015 we are planning to join a small group
of volunteers associated with Project Eden and Adelante that go to San Francisco de la Paz to work with
the Honduran people. These two projects were initiated by
Fr. Dan St. Laurent to address hunger (Project Eden
helps create community gardens) and the need for
education (Adelante supports keeping needy students
in school and providing tutoring to help them succeed.) Our group has opted to provide health clinics in
local villages. The Project Eden staff helps to organize
and provide support for the clinics. Our group collects
over-the-counter medications to distribute at the clinics.
(We will also purchase antibiotics, anti-parasite medicine, and blood pressure and diabetes drugs at a pharmacy in Honduras with monetary donations.) We will
be supplied with student interpreters to assist us with
communicating with our patients. Last year the group
did 4 days of clinics and saw 76-100 patients per day!
How can you help? Please consider donating much
needed over-the-counter medicine for us to bring with
us. Boxes will be at the entrance of each church. If
you would prefer to make a donation, checks can be
made to “St. Rose of Lima Parish—Mission to Honduras Fund.” We will collect the donated items
through October 30. The following items are needed
to take with us:
ACETAMINOPHEN
IBUPROFEN
NAPROXEN
ATHLETE FOOT CREAM
HYDROCORTISONE CREAM
ALLERGY MEDS (CLARITIN, ZYRTEC, ALLEGRA)
STOMACH MEDS (OMEPRAZOLE, FAMOTIDINE, ZANTAC,
TUMS, etc.)
EYE GLASSES (prescription and readers) FOR ADULTS
SUNGLASSES ARE ALSO VERY HELPFUL.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
BARRY AND DOREEN
We never think of connecting violence with our tongues.
But the first weapon the most cruel weapon, is the tongue.
Examine what part your tongue has played in creating
peace or violence.
We can really wound a person, we can kill a person,
with our tongue.

THE R.C.I.A. INQUIRY
Are you attracted to the Catholic Church,
but are not a Catholic yourself?
Are you a Catholic who never completed all
the sacraments?
Are you just interested in what the Catholic
Church teaches?
Then R.C.I.A. is for you. R.C.I.A. is
the Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults. It is a gradual process that
provides answers to your questions
and fulfillment of the sacraments
you may have missed. If you are
interested, or know someone else who might be, speak with
Fr. Matt (603) 788-2083, or Sue Tibbetts (788-2083). You can
also e-mail Sue at gohfaithformation@aol.com
Because you asked . . .
When did Catholics start putting images or
statues of Mary in church?
Today, a statue or picture of Mary is found in every
Catholic church, just as it can be seen in many, many
homes. Believe it or not, the tradition of honoring Mary
by venerating images of her goes all the way back to the
3rd century. Images of Jesus’s mother have been found
in the catacombs. (The catacombs were secret places,
often underground caves, in which Catholics worshiped
and celebrated the Eucharist in secret. Discovery would
often mean death during the periods when Christians
were being persecuted.) These early images found in the
catacombs often showed Mary as a Madonna (Mary as
mother and holding the infant Jesus). She was also often
shown crowned as a queen. Her connection to Christ
and to God the Father was well understood even at that
time. After the early 4th century, images of Mary as a
queenly mother or even as an empress were likely influenced by court ceremonies adopted from the Roman
culture. These royal depictions made sense to converts
from Rome where royalty was highly honored. Pictures
and statues of Mary today mostly show her relationship
to Jesus (for example, Madonnas), one of her own special
features (such as the Immaculate Heart) or a depiction
from her apparitions such as Our Lady of Guadalupe,
Lourdes and Fatima. KM

If you would like to sign up for the parish’s new EGive
(electronic giving) program, simply go to our parish website at gateofheavennh.org and follow the easy instructions. If you sign up by November 1, your name will be

Nativity Set for your home, or a reserved parking space
AND special seat at one of the Christmas Masses! As
always, we appreciate your generosity and your continued
support of this parish!
Our God is a God of abundance. In creating and sustaining the
world, God provides all that is good. In the First Reading, from
Isaiah 25, the images tell us that those who live as God calls us
to live will be treated lavishly. All are called to the Mountain
of Zion to receive the benefits God offers. Note that what the
People of God receive is to be shared with the world.
The Responsorial Psalm is the most beloved in the psalter. The
image of God as shepherd is the most enduring, usually pictured
as Jesus holding a lamb. But also note that the psalm describes
the human journey as a dark valley, with the believer surrounded
by foes. The shepherd’s work is arduous, with long hours of
lonely care for the flock. Like the faithful shepherd, God
prepares the place so the flock can survive.
In the Second Reading Paul reflects on Christian detachment.
Whether Paul is living in material abundance, or in poverty, as
he is now in prison, it is all the same when living in Christ. He
cannot control his circumstances, but finds security in trusting
that God will provide what he truly needs.
Today’s Gospel highlights once again our abundant God’s
ongoing invitation to participate in the banquet he has prepared. It is no accident that the celebration described is a
wedding feast. Matthew pictures God celebrating his union
with us by drawing an analogy with the most intimate union
in the human family. But in the story, many who are invited
are too busy with their own concerns to understand the
meaning of this invitation. So the servants are sent out to gather
all whom they have found, good and bad alike, to celebrate with
God. All are welcome; God will do the sorting.
1.
The three banquets described in today’s readings are
slightly different. What message do you take from each
on them?
2.
How well are you able to praise God no matter what
your circumstances are?
3.
What invitations from God do you turn down?
4.
Who do you have difficulty accepting at work? At
school? What kind of people belong to the groups you
spend time with?
“That was the best sermon on giving
I’ve ever heard.”
