8th Annual Australian Paediatric Society Meeting
The 8th Annual APS Diabetes Workshop will be held in Canberra at the Hyatt on 10th, 11th and 12th October 2014
and aims to build on previous success and popularity. The workshop aims to highlight cutting edge strategies in
management of diabetes in children and adolescents including modern equipment, team based models of care, and
family based interventions. This interactive collegiate meeting has always been conducted in good spirit with lively
discussion. The theme of the 2014 workshop is “Diabetes – Life be in it!” with guest speakers including Assoc. Prof
Stuart Brink (Boston), Allan Bolton, Liz Davis, Bruce King, Tony Lafferty, Marg McGill, Tim Jones, Carmel Smart and
Joe Solowiejczyk. There are free paper presentations, regional Australian models of diabetes care and case
scenarios. There will be an interactive panel discussion on insulin pump settings, pump features we like (or don’t),
download interpretation and fine tuning of pump therapy. There is also an optional family therapy in diabetes
workshop on Sunday

About the Presenters
Dr Stu Brink
Paediatric Endocrinologist

Dr Brink is the International Education Chair at ISPAD:
International Society for Paediatric & Adolescent Diabetes,
a consultant at Children with Diabetes, Inc. and a Senior
Endocrinologist at New England Diabetes and Endocrinology
Center (NEDEC).
Prof. Tim Jones
Paediatric Endocrinologist
Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth WA
Tim manages a large statewide diabetes program in Western
Australia including outreach and telemedicine. His unit was
the first to utilise insulin pump therapy in Australia and he has
research interests in hypoglycaemia, exercise and closing the
loop technology.
Dr Bruce King
Paediatric Endocrinologist
John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Newcastle NSW
Bruce is a leader of the John Hunter diabetes team, producing
some of the best glycaemic control in children in the world.
Bruce’s unit has the highest proportion of pump patients in the
major teaching hospitals in Australia and has a major interest in
pump therapy for the toddler age group.
Dr Liz Davis
Paediatric Endocrinologist
Princess Margaret Hospital, Subiaco
Liz is a reknowned endocrinologist who has done much
research in the areas of exercise and hypoglycaemia. She is a
leader of closed loop models.
Allan Bolton
Marg Mcgill
Paediatric Diabetes Educator
Royal Prince Alfred, NSW
Marg is currently a senior Vice-President of the International
Diabetes Federation. Marg has a Master of Science in Medicine.
She was Australia’s first paediatric diabetes educator, and she
has managed Australia’s largest diabetes centre for the past 15
years. Her clinical and research interest is in the detection and
management of diabetes complications.

Carmel is a renowned international researcher and presenter
in food issue related to diabetes. Carmel is the convenor of
the Science Schools of the International Society of Paediatric
and Adolescent Diabetes.
Deb Foskett

Deb undertook her paediatric training at Great Ormond Street
in London. She has been working with young people
with diabetes for the past 25 years. Deb has specialised in
managing insulin pump therapy for the past 15 year and has
established her own successful private insulin pump service
known as Insulin Pump Angels.
