prizefighter. He was also an engineer working on
steam engines for Watts company and later head
of Manchester fire brigade, dying aged around 50
during service as a fireman. A man of herculean
proportions he is probably best remembered for
his 'mismatch' fight for the English championship
against the much smaller Tom Johnson at
Banbury on 22nd October 1879, the drawing
above being taken from this fight. Perrins lost
exhausted over 62 rounds have been run ragged
by his smaller opponent.]

Elia Maria González-Álvarez y López-Chicheria ,
also known as Lilí Álvarezb (1905 - 1998) Spanish
, was a Spanish multi-sport competitor, an
international tennis champion, an author, feminist
and a journalist.
She is perhaps best known for wearing her
controversial ' Robe-pants ' at the 1931 French
Championships. Elizabeth Ryan ( ink signature )
Elizabeth Montague Ryan (1892 - 1979) USA ,
lived most of her life in the United Kingdom. Ryan
won 30 Grand Slam titles. Nineteen of those titles
were in women's doubles and mixed doubles at
Wimbledon, an all-time record for those two
events. Twelve of her Wimbledon titles were in
women's doubles and seven were in mixed
doubles. Ryan also won six women's doubles
titles and two mixed doubles titles at the French
Championships, as well as one women's doubles
title and two mixed doubles titles at the U.S.
Championships.
Miss Elsie Goldsack ( pen ink signature ) bears

Wimbledon '. Elsie Goldsack Pittman (1904 1975) English female tennis player who competed
during the second half of the 1920s and the 1930s.
Between 1925 and 1939 she participated in 15
Wimbledon Championships.Her best result in the
singles event was reaching the semifinal in 1929 in
which she was defeated in straight sets by firstseeded and eventual champion Helen Wills..In the
mixed doubles she reached the quarterfinal in
1930 and 1931. Her biggest success at Grand
Slam level came in 1937 when she partnered with
Phyllis Mudford King to reach the final of the 1937
Wimbledon Championships, which they lost to
Simone Mathieu and Billie Yorke in straight sets.
Miss Joan C. Ridley ( pen ink signature ). Miss
Ridley , English , was known as one of the most
attractive English players and won the East of
England Championship in 1927.
Miss Heine ( pen ink signature ) Esther "Bobbie"
Heine Miller (1909-2011?) South African .She was
South Africa's first international tennis star. Her
first success came at the Natal Championships in
1925. That same year she represented South
Africa when a British team visited during 1926-27.
As Miss Heine she first campaigned in Europe in
1927, making the semis of the French and
actually winning the ladies doubles . Heine lost a
close semi encounter with the Dutch Kea Bouman.
She was seeded #7 at Wimbledon, the first year
seeding was introduced after the Lenglen debackle
of the previous year.
Two year later she returned to Europe as part of a
sponsored South African ladies team. At the
French she was seeded #2. In a strange twist she
lost to Cilly Aussem, her 1927 victim. Bobbie and
doubles partner Alida Neave fell in the doubles
final.
Bobbie then found herself seeded #6 at
Wimbledon. Bobbie had to contend with Helen
Wills in the quarters. Once again she reached
reached the mixed semis. Her titles that year
included the British Hard Courts and the Irish
Championships, both the singles and doubles.
Bobbie wed farmer Harry Miller in 1931. Miller
emigrated to Australia in 1978.

He won Wimbledon in 1927 & 1929 , was ranked
No. 1 in the world in 1928. He also won many
Grand Slam titles.

Pénélope Julie "Diddie" Vlasto Serpieri (1903 1985) French. She won the silver medal at the
Paris Olympics in 1924 in women's singles. She
also won the version of the French national
championships in 1924 that was open only to
French nationals. She was a doubles partner of
Suzanne Lenglen in many doubles tournaments
during the early 1920s.
Vlasto was one of the last lady players to use an
underhand serve in international tennis.

Helen Jacobs but together with Ermyntrude Harvey
won the doubles match against Sarah Palfrey and

1920 to 1930. While in singles he dropped out of
the competition after the first or second round
each year, he won the doubles title partnering
Randolph Lycett in 1923. In January 1926, he
married Kathleen McKane, a two time Wimbledon
singles champion. In the same year, the newly
married couple took the mixed doubles title at
Wimbledon, being the only married couple ever to
win this championship. Leslie had already reached
the mixed doubles final two years earlier in 1924
where he was beaten by his future wife Kitty, and
the couple would again in 1927.
He was also member of the British Davis Cup
team from 1923 to 1927 and competed at the 1924
Summer Olympics in Paris.

Kathleen "Kitty" McKane Godfree (1896 - 1992, )
was a British female tennis and badminton player.
According to Wallis Myers of The Daily Telegraph
and the Daily Mail, Godfree was ranked in the
world top ten from 1921 (when the rankings began)
through 1927, reaching a career high of World No.
2 in those rankings in 1923, 1924, and 1926.
Kitty won five Olympic medals in tennis at the
1920 Antwerp and 1924 Paris games, the most
Olympic medals ever won by a tennis player. In
1923 she captured the title at the World Covered
Court Championships.
Kitty Godfree won the Wimbledon singles title
twice.

Suzanne Lenglen ( pen ink signature ) Suzanne
Rachel Flore Lenglen (1899 - 1938) French. She
was a French tennis player who won 31
Championship titles between 1914 and 1926. A
flamboyant, trendsetting athlete, she was the first
female tennis celebrity and one of the first
international female sport stars, named La Divine
(the divine one) by the French press. Only four
years after her first tennis strokes, Lenglen played
in the final of the 1914 French Championships,
aged only 14 (the tournament was open only to
members of French clubs until 1925). She lost but
that same year, she won the World Hard Court
Championships held at Saint-Cloud, turning 15
during the tournament. This made her the
youngest winner of a major championship in tennis
history, a record she still holds !

and Helen Wills Roark, was an American tennis
player. She has been described as "the first
American born woman to achieve international
celebrity as an athlete. ''
Helen Wills Moody won 31 Grand Slam titles
(singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles),
including seven singles titles at the U.S.
Championships, eight singles titles at Wimbledon,
and four singles titles at the French
Championships.
She married Frederick Moody in December 1929.
She won approximately one-half of her major
championships as "Helen Wills" and one-half as
"Helen Wills Moody". Wills divorced Moody in
1937 and married Aidan Roark in October 1939.
She died on January 1, 1998, aged 92.

Jean René Lacoste (1904 - 1996) French He was
nicknamed "the Crocodile" by fans because of his
tenacity on the court; he is also known worldwide
as the creator of the Lacoste tennis shirt, which
he introduced in 1929.
Lacoste was one of The Four Musketeers with
Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, and Henri
Cochet, French tennis stars who dominated the
game in the 1920s and early 1930s. He won seven
Grand Slam singles titles in the French,
American, and British championships but never
made the long trip to Australia to play in their
championships. He was the World No. 1 player for
both 1926 and 1927.

USA. He is best remembered for his gold medal at

list in September the same year.
Hunter reached the singles final of the 1923

was a French champion tennis player. He was one
of the famous "Four Musketeers" from his country

nicknamed "Big Bill," He is often considered one
of the greatest tennis players of all time.
Tilden was the World No. 1 player for seven
years. He won 14 Major singles titles including 10
Grand Slams, 1 World Hard Court Championships
and 3 Pro Slams. He also won a record seven US
Championships titles (shared with Richard Sears
and Bill Larned). He dominated the world of
international tennis in the first half of the 1920s,
and during his 18-year amateur period of 1912-30,
he won 138 of 192 tournaments. He has a number
of all-time tennis achievements including a career
match winning record of 907 wins and 62 losses .
His career winning percentage at the US National
Championships was 90.69% 69 wins and 7 losses
that ranks him first ahead of Roger Federer, Fred
Perry and Pete Sampras, and also a 42 match win
streak from 1920 to 1926 is ahead of Roger
Federer and Ivan Lendl. His 95 match winning
streak from 1924 to 1925 is ahead of Don Budge
and Roy Emerson, and also his best win-loss
single season coming in 1920 at 98.73%, 78 wins
and 1 loss which places him ahead of John
McEnroe and Jimmy Connors . In addition he
remains the only player to reach 10 Major finals at
a single Grand Slam event in a career at the US
National Championships. At the Wimbledon
Championships, he recorded a career 31wins and
3 losses match record ranking him 3rd all-time
behind Björn Borg and Don Budge.

Henry Wilfred "Bunny" Austin (1906 - 2000) was a
British tennis player from England.
Austin was, for 74 years, the last Briton to reach
the final of the Gentlemen's Singles at Wimbledon,
until Andy Murray did so in 2012. He was also a
finalist at the 1937 French Championships and a
championship winner at Queen's Club. Along with
Fred Perry, he was a vital part of the British team
that won the Davis Cup in three consecutive years
(1933-35). He is also remembered as the first
tennis player to wear shorts.

Not to be confused with Sir John Dean Paul , this
painter was the son of the Norwich Landscape
artist Joseph Paul (1804-87)
Two horse portraits , one a coach horse dated
1886, and one a hunter dated 1867 ( Christie's
July 24 ,1980) .... not dissimilar to James Clark
but some of Paul's work is very good quality.
A.J.G. Paul ( possibly the same artist) is recorded
as living in London (1880-84) and exhibiting three
landscapes at SS. Page 345, The Dictionary of
British Equestrian Artists, by Sally Mitchell

General
Whilst Dickins Auctioneers Ltd do make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of any lot:
a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot, or lots, is sold by the vendor with all
faults, imperfections and errors of descriptions.
b) Dickins Auctioneers Ltd do not accept any responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin,
authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot unless they have been instructed in writing by the vendor
so to certify and in such cases the auctioneers do so as agents for the vendor and are not themselves responsible for
such claims
c) All Statements, whether printed in the catalogue or made orally as to any of the matters set out in b. above are
statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or implying any warranties or representations of fact by
Dickins Auctioneers Ltd, unless they have been instructed in writing by the vendor so to certify, and in such cases

The auctioneer has the absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or to withdraw any lot or
lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving reason or without
previous notice. He/she may bid on behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at
the auctioneers discretion.
The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that
a dispute has arisen, he/she has absolute discretion to settle it or re-offer the lot. The auctioneer may at his/her sole
discretion determine the advances or bidding or refuse a bid
Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor. Where there is no reserve price (but not
otherwise) the seller has the right to bid either personally or by any one person (who may be the auctioneer)
All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are
subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid
being accepted for the lot.

Inspection
Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he/she has satisfied him/herself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise as to
all sale terms and conditions and physical condition and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or
has been repaired or restored.
Property and Risk
Legal title will not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) have been paid for in full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold
until the purchase price is paid in full, but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer
Purchase Price
The purchaser of any lot shall pay the hammer price plus a premium (together with VAT) on the premium at the appropriate rate and on the
hammer price at the appropriate rate if applicable on that lot. Lots marked with a * are subject to a 20% VAT on hammer price as well as
the buyers premium. The premium shall be calculated at 17.5 % + VAT (minimum of £1 per lot plus VAT). The premium is to be paid by
all purchasers. The amount invoiced in respect of the premium will be inclusive of VAT but this VAT will not normally be recoverable by
the buyer. The vendor authorises the auctioneer to deduct commission and expenses form the hammer price and to retain the premium
payable by the purchaser.
Lots purchased online with Live Auctioneers, Invaluable / Artfact Live or ATG media will attract an additional charge for this service in the
sum of 3% of the hammer price plus VAT at the rate imposed

Should you be unable to attend the sale, we will be pleased to make commission bids on your behalf or take bids over the telephone.
Lots purchased online with Live Auctioneers, Invaluable / Artfact Live and ATG media will attract an additional charge for this service in
the sum of 3% of the hammer price plus VAT at the rate imposed
Payment
Payment for lots purchased must be received in full within 48 hours of the sale. Items cannot be removed from the premises until payment
has been cleared
Clearance
Dickins Auctioneers Ltd ask that items be removed promptly from the premises following the sale. If this is not possible please contact the
auctioneers office as limited storage is available at the purchasers risk. Please note if storage arrangements are not made with the
auctioneers office Dickins Auctioneers Ltd reserve the right to levy a handling charge of £10 if items are not removed from the premises by
12 noon on the Wednesday following the sale and thereafter will be charged £2 per lot, per day. Should the items still remain after 14 days,
the items will be re offered in the next available auction in order to recover costs.
Postage & Delivery
Dickins Auctioneers Ltd will be happy to pack and post small purchases at the buyers expense or alternatively recommend specialist
shippers.
Collection by a third party
If a third party is to collect goods on behalf of a buyer, formal written authority and identification will be required before the goods can be
released.
Firearms
Firearms cannot be released without production of the necessary firearms certificate.
