Page 3 Synergy Makes the Difference When It Comes to Adrenal Balance A column by Annette Kutz Schippel, DC When I started diving into nutrition years ago, it became clear that working with the adrenals is such a logical starting point. Everyone has them. And Annette Kutz Schippel, DC everyone was busy stressing theirs out! But the adrenals seemed to be the most underappreciated and overlooked gland in the endocrine system. The more I studied them, the more fascinated I became. These two little glands, the size of a walnut, pack a lot of power when it comes to our overall health and vitality. They interact with the thyroid gland, gonads, and pancreas and are an integral part of our immune system. The adrenals produce the most potent anti-inflammatory hormone in the body, cortisol—a hormone that when in balance with the whole system can be your best friend but when out of balance can be a challenge. I noticed how many of my patients had poorly functioning adrenal glands. Some were just exhausted, and others didn’t know when to shut off or effectively come out of the stress response. Even though a stress response is normal, we are not meant to stay in that mode. While working with those patients, I also noticed how many other little things improved as a result of the adrenals becoming stronger. So I delved even deeper into the relationship adrenals have with the entire body and came to the conclusion that they are crucial to aging well and maintaining vitality. It comes down to the hormones produced by the adrenals and the jobs of those hormones in the body. These hormones help support the way the body naturally regulates the immune system, blood sugar, and blood pressure; breaks down and rebuilds tissue and bone effectively; gives us clarity of mind; balances mood; supports digestion; and ultimately responds to stress. The key to working with these patients was to understand where they were at as far as adrenal strength and function. Knowing this would allow me to be more specific with protocols. I used a test that would evaluate the natural cortisol rhythm by measuring values for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a precursor material to cortisol, as a window into insulin response and gut health. Because for many of these patents, Drenamin® alone wasn’t going to be enough to support their adrenal function. Adrenals need plenty of B vitamins and C vitamins for recovery as well as trace minerals. However, I learned that the herbs were really the missing piece. Adding in the right herbs helped turn the patients around very quickly. It was the synergy between the Standard Process and MediHerb® adrenal support products that really made the difference. We need the raw materials to feed, address, and support the adrenal glands and have many products to choose from. My favorites include Paraplex®, Drenamin, Cataplex® A-C-P, Trace Minerals-B12TM, Organically Bound Minerals, Adrenal Desiccated, and Cellular Vitality. Each one has its place and is chosen based on what is going on with the patient. When we consider herbs, I like to think about choosing herbs that help our bodies adapt to stress appropriately and also herbs that will tone and strengthen the adrenal glands. It is also important to support the immune system. In addition, we might consider herbs that calm the nervous system. Some of my favorite herbal products are MediHerb’s Adrenal Complex, Eleuthero, Withania Complex, Rhodiola & Ginseng Complex, Thyroid Complex, Nervagesic, and Nevaton®. I know the list seems long, but when you combine the right foundational products with the right herbs, your patients will thank you. Fall Webinar Series: Focus on Adrenals You may be saying to yourself, that’s great, but how will I know what to do? I invite you to join me for my fall webinars focusing on the adrenals. In October, I will go over the basics and beyond. In November, I will talk about stress and the holidays. In the meantime, here are some lifestyle modifications you can have your patients work on right away. Or try them yourself! 5 Tips for Regaining Adrenal Health 1. Enjoy the healthy stress of mild exercise, walking, yoga, and Pilates. 2. Get an uninterrupted good night’s sleep. 3. Cut out refined sugars and carbohydrates while increasing healthy protein and fat. 4. Don’t skip meals. 5. Find things to feel good about and focus on them. Excessive worry never changed anything. I hope this gives you a taste of what we will have an opportunity to explore in more depth during my upcoming webinars. See the back page for more information on the October webinar. NEWS OCTOBER 2014 85 Tips to a Successful Practice Dr. Royal Lee, the founder of Standard Process, began applying his whole food philosophy to creating supplements 85 years ago. After his success with the development of Catalyn®, Dr. Lee didn’t rest. His passion for creating nutritional solutions to help improve the quality of life drove him to continue to develop new formulas and products. Like Dr. Lee, you know optimal health looks different for every person. As a health care professional, you are constantly learning about new ways, techniques, or programs that may assist you in helping many different patient types. You may be looking for ways to expand your practice into the realm of an integrated health clinic. In this month’s installment of our “85 Tips to a Successful Practice Series,” chiropractor James Powell and naturopathic doctor Robert Powell of Powell James Powell, DC, DIBAK, FICC Chiropractic in Canton, Ohio, share their advice for creating an integrated practice. Their practice, Powell Chiropractic, offers patients different ways to develop new Robert Powell, ND lifestyle habits and includes chiropractic care, exercise therapy, The Power of the Pedal rehabilitation, and nutrition programs. The doctors offer the following advice to help you transform your clinic into an integrated practice: 1. When you begin to expand the nutritional component within an existing busy practice, build patient awareness about the availability of that service. You can do this by setting aside a day to offer complimentary nutritional consults for patients. 2. The more you promote nutritional consultations as an adjunct service in your clinic, the more patients will begin to seek this type of full-service care. Over time, you will see nutritional support will develop into a normal conduit of patient care for your practice. 5. A new patient’s initial consultation/ examination is a good time to mention you can offer nutritional support. Begin by asking questions pertaining to health concerns other than the problem that brought the patient in, and offer to explore with the patient ways you can help nutritionally. 7. If a longtime patient has not discussed nutrition with you before, ask if the patient would be interested in filling out a nutritional questionnaire (system survey) while waiting for an appointment. The Florida Chiropractic Association National Convention & Expo was held August 21-24 in Orlando, Florida. Standard Process booth visitors pedaled our smoothie-making bicycles to contribute $5 per mile toward a $5,000 Standard Process donation to The Patriot Project. The Patriot Project provides chiropractic care to members of the military, veterans, and their dependents. Learn more about how you can become a Patriot Project doctor at www.patriot-project.org. 8. Follow up your nutritional exam by providing your findings to the patient and offering nutritional support. More complicated nutritional needs should be addressed at a scheduled consultation time for report of nutritional needs. 3. Many busy practices set aside half of a day each week for nutritional consults only. Your goal is to develop this into the need for a full-time provider to focus on patients’ nutritional needs. 4. A nutritional exam may include a system survey, blood analysis, or other nutritional testing tools, depending on the methods the provider has knowledge of and feels are necessary for a thorough exam. 6. Recommend that patients schedule appointments specifically devoted to nutrition so that you can have adequate time to discuss their needs in-depth. 9. If a patient is hesitant to start nutritional therapy after receiving the nutritional report, during future visits gently ask how the patient is doing nutritionally since the last visit. 10.As natural health care providers we believe it is our duty to recommend general support to all new patients regardless of their health condition. Typically we recommend a daily pack of supplements with the nutrients most helpful for recovery or maintaining good health. Find a daily supplement pack you are comfortable recommending to all patients. To read more tips from our guest contributors, visit www.standardprocess. com/85-practice-tips. Winners of the 21-Day Purification Video Contest Announced The winners of the 21-Day Purification Video Contest have been chosen. After viewing many creative videos, the judges had the hard task of choosing the winners. Ultimately, Randi J., a patient of Dr. Christine Foskett at the Bozeman Wellness Center in Montana, was picked as the grand prizewinner. In her video, Randi stated that her one degree of change since completing the purification program was gaining “the courage to get a new circle of friends.” Randi compared her old friends (refined sugars and highly processed carbohydrates) to her new friends (vegetables, fruit and other healthy foods). She said that with her new friends, “life is sweeter and fresher, and my step is just a little lighter.” Randi will enjoy her grand prize vacation at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance® Resort & Spa in Sonoma, California. As Randi’s health care professional, Dr. Foskett will receive $2,000 (suggested list price) in Standard Process and/or MediHerb products. The purification video contest created a lot of interest, and we received numerous videos. The one degree of change reported was varied and ranged from finding infinite energy to making a transition from processed foods to eating a rainbow of vegetables. All the contest videos can be seen at www.standardprocess.com/StandardProcess/Purification-Program. Sometimes the old standbys become our new favorites. In commemoration of our 85th anniversary, we’ll be featuring some of our favorite “classics’’ that deserve a closer look. The Standard Process dedication to providing supplements with whole food ingredients began with the introduction of Catalyn® in 1929. Health care professionals have relied on many of our formulas for the better part of a century. Phosfood® Liquid Phosfood Liquid encourages a healthy blood calcium-phosphorus ratio. This glutenfree and vegetarian supplement promotes healthy cellular metabolism and supports bone health. Each bottle of Phosfood Liquid comes with a dropper for easy dosing. One of 15 products that Dr. Royal Lee’s Vitamin Products Co. launched between 1931 and 1943, Phosfood Liquid is a Standard Process classic. Sustainability at Standard Process Minimizing our impact on the planet through sustainable choices is a core value of Standard Process. To package our bottles, we use boxes made of 100 percent recycled paperboard. These eco-friendly boxes provide protection during shipping and can be used afterward for storage. Standard Process Products Through the Ages Like most businesses, Standard Process has humble beginnings. It began with a curious dentist, Dr. Royal Lee, trying to find nutritional solutions to help improve the lives of many people. While fulfilling this mission, Dr. Lee started three different supplement companies: Vitamin Products Co., Therapeutic Foods Co., and Standard Process Laboratories. Over time, the companies merged and formed Standard Process Inc. In 1929, Dr. Lee developed Catalyn, his first product, to help bridge nutritional gaps in the diet. As word of Catalyn spread, Dr. Lee established Vitamin Products Co. in Milwaukee to manufacture and sell the product. He designed and built much of the equipment needed to mass-produce Catalyn. From 1931 to 1943, under the Vitamin Products label, Dr. Lee developed 15 more products. The supplements were sold through health care professionals and pharmacies. The majority of the new products Dr. Lee created were vitamin complex concentrations from whole food ingredient sources. During this period, Vitamin Products produced more than 250 million vitamin tablets. As Dr. Lee’s supplements grew in popularity, practitioners without prescribing rights, like chiropractors, also wanted to provide their patients with Vitamin Products supplements. Dr. Lee established a new company, Therapeutic Foods Co., to allow these practitioners to sell the products. In order to differentiate the products in the two company lines, Dr. Lee used different names. For example, Vitamin Products’ Cataplex® A-F Betaris, from Vitamin Products, was known as Vitamin A&F With Betafood® in the Therapeutics Food line. The packaging was also different between the two brands, with Vitamin Products supplements packaged in glass bottles and products under the Therapeutic Foods label packaged in four rolls, providing patients with a month’s supply. As the 1940s approached, Dr. Lee was developing a method for extracting nutrients from animal organs and tissues. He called these nutrients ProtomorphogenTM extracts and CytosolTM extracts. These extracts became integral parts in Dr. Lee’s new products. From 1944 to 1949, he developed four products that included ProtomorphogenTM extracts or CytosolTM extracts: Ferrofood®, Betacol®, Cyruta®, and Cataplex® E2. ProtomorphogenTM extract and CytosolTM extract products were new to the nutritional marketplace. Dr. Lee wanted to be sure that going forward these products were only available through health care professionals to realize their optimal health benefits. He was confident this would ensure patients received the most thorough guidance. Dr. Lee started another brand specifically for these extract products. This was the beginning of Standard Process Laboratories. Dr. Lee ran Vitamin Products, Therapeutic Foods, and Standard Process Laboratories out of his Milwaukee headquarters. Each brand had its own specific goals and products to distribute. The lines had evolved from Dr. Lee selling and advertising Catalyn by word of mouth to a full selection of products being sold through health care professionals so patients could learn about the products and be under the guidance of a health care professional from the start. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Dr. Lee created 83 new products. The products were designed to support all areas of the body. Dr. Lee passed away November 1, 1967. In 1968, the product lines began to merge, with Therapeutic Foods products joining the Standard Process Laboratories line. In the 1970s, Vitamin Products and Standard Process Laboratories merged to improve the efficiency of bottling and packaging. To avoid confusion, product names were also combined with the most popular names being chosen. As the companies and their product lines grew, more space was needed for manufacturing. In the summer of 1987, ground was broken for a new corporate headquarters building located in Palmyra, Wisconsin, roughly 50 miles west of Milwaukee. When the doors to the new corporate headquarters opened in January 1988, the Vitamin Products Company name was dropped and the company was re-branded under one name and image, Standard Process Laboratories. In 1990 “Laboratories” was removed from the Standard Process name. The company had evolved through three different product lines, a city change, and a re-brand, all while experiencing continuous growth and prosperity. As we celebrate our 85th year in business, the two generations of family that have come after Dr. Lee have successfully carried on his mission to provide only the highest-quality vitamins and supplements and improve the quality of life for others.
