The Banner The Lord is My Banner. Exodus 17:15 First Baptist Church, Cuero October 8, 2014 www.fbccuero.org Trunk - R - Treat The time is approaching to do our Trunk -R- Treat outreach program. Everyone who has been involved in the past have had a lot of fun giving candy to the children at the courthouse. We have seen more churches get involved in the effort in the last two years. We anticipate this will be another year in which we will see a large number of children and a large group of churches getting involved. We need your help. We need people to decorate cars or trucks with a fun theme and be at the courthouse to hand out candy or tracks to the children who come by. We had 800 children or more which attended the Trunk -R -Treat last year. So we will need a lot of candy and support to do our part. I ask that you consider joining us in this effort to share the light of Christ on a night in which the devil usually gets to revel in darkness. Pumpkin Patch First Presbyterian Church and the United Methodist Church have been putting on a Pumpkin Patch fund raiser for the last few years. This year, they are wanting to get other churches involved in the effort. So they are asking for volunteers to join with them in helping them at the Pumpkin Patch, which is located at the Presbyterian lawn across from the courthouse. All of the proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Cuero. They have a sign-up sheet available in the office for volunteers. They are particularly looking for volunteers to help during the morning hours from 8:30 to noon. The grade schools bring the children to the Pumpkin Patch so the children can receive a free pumpkin. At times there are about 150 children at the patch at a time. So, if you can help with the effort to work with the Pumpkin Patch they would be very grateful. The Armor of the Lord This Sunday I will begin to address the spiritual armor of God which we use in spiritual warfare. We will begin with the Belt of Truth. I ask that you begin praying about the Belt of Truth so you may receive insight for your life by the Holy Spirit as we apply our heart to this Word. See you Sunday in Worship, Glenn howeyeclife.wordpress.com Larry’s Notes VISITORS, NEW MEMBERS, TWO SERVICES A lot of things have changed. Fifteen years ago, I started serving as your Pastor for Music and Worship. “Back in the day”, we had one worship service each Sunday morning. There were many Sundays when we had no visitors. Ten baptisms in a year was great. It’s different now. We have two worship services. Both are well attended. I would say that we have almost doubled in worship attendance in fifteen years. Every Sunday, we have visitors. Often in the second service, I do not recognize a third of the people in attendance. In the last three weeks, we have had seven baptisms and this Sunday we will baptize again (Praise the Lord!). Wow. The question use to be, “Where are all the people?” Now the question is, “Who are all these people?” Who are all these people? That’s everyone’s job to find out. I believe God is sending us people. Some are Christians and they are looking for a church. Some are folks seeking God and hoping to find something spiritual for their lives. Some are curious and want to “check us out.” If you are already a member of FBC, you have a responsibility to help create an environment where everyone feels welcomed. You and I have developed relationships in the church and we are very comfortable. Someone new might be a little intimidated by a new (and possibly strange) place full of people they don’t know. A nice smile and sincere handshake will go a long way toward a visitor concluding that maybe this church is OK. Please make a point to go out of your way to greet people you don’t know. I don’t think anyone intentionally avoids strangers at church. It’s just a whole lot more natural and easy to quickly find the people you are comfortable with and fellowship with them. Take a moment to think about how it would be for you if you were new to Cuero or new to church. What would help you feel more at ease? I guess all of this can be summed up as follows: “Say, ‘hello,’ to folks you don’t know.” Say hello to people you don’t know. Larry chromaticview.wordpress.com J. I. Packer, Christian theologian, in his book, Knowing God, writes: “What were we made for? To know God. What should we aim for in life? To know God. What is the eternal life that Jesus gives? To know God. What is the best thing in life? To know God.” That sums it up… our history, our earthly existence, and our eternity in a nutshell! It really is very simple, but we certainly can complicate who we are, can’t we? We embark on a journey to figure out where we came from and call it “ancestry.” We decide who we want to become and line out steps to get there and call it “ambition.” We pour over scriptures to get any and every clue for what is to come, completely overlooking that our eternity as believers has already begun and the joy He offers is at our fingertips. Finally, we look high and low for the best that this life has to offer, not realizing the Best is already within us. I’m a type A person, so I like making lists, planning, setting goals and working hard. I also enjoy earthly things. I’m not saying these things are bad, but they can potentially confuse our understanding of who we were created to be. When our pursuit of the world takes precedence over who we were made to pursue, we have missed the boat. It might serve us well to check our compass!
