Lethbridge
Exhibition
Park
announced at a press conference that
Lethbridge’s second annual Green Life
Expo will be held on Saturday, October
18th, 2014 from 10 am to 5 pm in the
Main Pavilion of Exhibition Park. The
Green Life Expo, as you might expect, is
a unique trade show featuring all varieties of green products and services. It
gives an opportunity to industry professionals to promote themselves, build
new business contacts and educate the
public on green business in Southern
Alberta. The main focus of this event is
to provide green living ideas and solutions not only for industry, but everyday
situations.
The Green Life Expo event is only in
its second year and already it is a showcase for so many different products and
services. The exhibitors themselves will
be organized into various categories
based on various themes. For example,
there is the green energy zone, greener
homes and gardens, local and organic
marketplace, green building zone, ecofashion, transportation, wellness zone,
and green kids activity zone. Visitors to
the Expo will have the opportunity to
speak to all the exhibitors regarding
their energy saving products and services that create the least impact on our
environment.
Education is obviously paramount
when it comes to green technologies. In
keeping with this, Megan Catalano from
the Communications Department of the
Lethbridge Community College was on
hand to say that LCC will once again be
the presenting partner of the Green Life
Expo.The Lethbridge College has always
been, and continues to be, actively
involved in creating a skilled workforce
able to cope with the emerging priori-

ties of a changing and finite world. It is
even more critical in today’s world for
individuals, businesses, and teaching
institutions to maintain relevance and
social responsibility. Through training,
they equip students to take advantage
of the new and unexpected challenges
and opportunities that come from
developing and promoting sustainable
products and services.
The College also understands that
they have a responsibility that goes
beyond training. Sponsoring events like
the Green Life Expo promotes industry
partnerships and co-ordination of
resources. It is also a means of bringing
together the creators and promoters of
these greener technologies with their
target customers. This creates immediate and long term economic drivers for
our community, which also serves to
feed more growth and innovation. In
other words, it’s not enough to teach
people, everyone concerned and in the
know needs to get together at events
like this. It stimulates the local green
economy, it creates more connections,
which leads to new ideas, an enhanced
ability to keep pace with needs as they
arise, and everyone, including the environment directly benefit.
The City of Lethbridge Waste and
Recycling Service, like the Lethbridge
College, agrees that our local community is in fact a very rich source of new
ideas and inspiration when it comes to
greener technologies and solutions.
Since last year’s Expo there are many
individuals, organizations and businesses locally deserving of recognition for
their Green efforts and accomplishments, and for taking action to better
our local environment with the Lethbridge Green List.
Heather Gowan was therefore on
hand at the press conference offering
the City’s continued commitment and
support for the Green Life Expo. As a
complement to the Expo, Exhibition
Park, with the support of the City of
Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Program are hosting the Green Seed Ceremony. This ceremony is a recognition
program which is designed to honour
those in the community that are literally
planting the seeds of sustainability by
their direct actions. The ceremony is

careers
Avoid workplace traps
In most work situations your positive,
professional attitudes and actions play a
large part in your success. If you’re feeling
down about your job and stalled on your
career path, it could be because you’ve
stepped into a workplace trap—a situation where your actions and attitudes may
be making you, your co-workers and your
supervisor uncomfortable.
When you learn to recognize workplace traps, you can escape from the ones
you’ve stepped into and step around others. This article looks at five of the most
common workplace traps and offers suggestions to avoid them.
Avoid complaining
There will always be problems in the
workplace and complaining won’t solve
them. Complaining is never a good option
because it just makes a bad situation
worse. It lowers morale, wastes energy and
gives you a reputation for negativity that
can hurt your career. In fact, in a recent
survey, the top workplace pet peeve is
people who complain too much.
Action: Do what you can to change
the situation. If that’s not possible, accept
it and move on. If the situation is unacceptable and you’ve done everything in
your power to change it without success,
then look for a different job or ask for a
transfer.
Avoid gossiping
Gossip reduces productivity—if
you’re gossiping, you’re not working. It
creates mistrust and suspicion, leads to
comparisons among co-workers and generally makes for an unpleasant workplace.
Action: When a co-worker starts gossiping, choose one of the following
responses:
• Leave the conversation - “I’ve got to
run.”“Got to make a call.”
• Change the subject - “How was your
weekend?”
• Steer the conversation in a more
productive direction - “We can’t do much
about that. What can we do to make
things better around here?”
Avoid inappropriate online activities
Your employer probably provides you
with online access, including an email
account. In an increasing number of workplaces, you may also be allowed to access
social networking websites. Many
employers can and do keep track of their
employees Internet use.
Action: Make sure that the searches,
posts and social networking you do during work hours and on workplace com-
puters are related to your job. Check with
your supervisor if it’s okay to access your
personal email or social networking
account during your breaks. Never visit a
website that you wouldn’t want your
supervisor to know about. Never email or
post any content that you wouldn’t want
to see, with your name on it, on an office
bulletin board.
Avoid comparisons
Comparing yourself to your co-workers creates anxiety and unhappiness.
Dwelling on how much better they’re
being treated, how much more they’re
making or how much more attention
they’re getting does not help you. In fact,
it wastes your time, destroys your morale,
increases your frustration and keeps you
from taking positive action.
Action: When you’re tempted to compare your situation with a co-worker’s, ask
yourself if there’s anything you can do to
change things:
• If the answer is yes, make a plan and
take positive action, e.g. improve your
skills, volunteer for a project or increase
your workload. In other words, make sure
your supervisor notices you for all the
right reasons.
• If the answer is no, accept the situa-
tion and take action to release any negativity you feel. For example, write down
your short- and long-term goals and
begin working towards them.
Avoid worrying about things beyond
your control
Office politics, confusing workplace
policies and complex bureaucracies can
sometimes be a fact of working life. If
you’re worrying about big picture issues
that don’t directly affect you, you may be
finding it difficult to focus.
Action: Determine if the workplace
issue you’re worried about is central to the
work you’re doing. If it is and it’s not possible for you to change the situation, accept
it and do the best you can under the circumstances or start looking for a different
job.
In just about every workplace, there’s
the potential to step into uncomfortable
situations. Being aware of these workplace traps makes it easier to avoid them.
If you have stepped into a workplace trap,
taking positive action will help you
change either the situation or your
response to it, and increase both your satisfaction and effectiveness.

The benefits of business podcasting
(MS) Businesses, particularly small businesses, understand the importance of establishing an online presence.
Identifying new content strategies can help keep a company's name and business motto fresh in the minds of
consumers. Search engine optimization, or SEO, and
social media use can greatly improve a business' online
visibility.
Podcasting is another tool small businesses have at
their disposal. Podcasts, often referred to as on-demand
audio content or audiocasts, are usually short audio or
video clips. Typically they're episodic and are released at
key intervals. Podcasting enables listeners to determine
when and where they would like to receive content. Podcasts can be informative, entertaining or a combination of
both. All that's needed to tune in is a mobile device or
Internet access.
Although podcasting was once a way to present ondemand radio and other audio programming, businesses
have redesigned podcasting to use them for training and
marketing and as another avenue to disseminate marketing materials to the public and a target market. As
opposed to visiting a website or reading newsletters and
emails, podcasts are often described as more customerfriendly and accessible.
There are several ways businesses can benefit from
podcasting, including:
· Businesses can distribute valuable content to
increase customer loyalty.
· Podcasts enable you to be an industry and news
trend provider, which can set you apart from the competition.
· Audio and video are very engaging media and can
keep customers engaged for longer periods of time.
· Podcasts increase marketing reach and online visibility and can strengthen SEO.
· Syndication and repeat scheduling gives listeners a
reason to keep coming back for more content.
· Podcasts can be promoted through social media
channels to make online marketing efforts even more
cohesive.
· Downloads of podcasts and transcripts can be
offered directly from your company's website to drive
even more traffic to the location.
· It's possible to measure the success of digital audio
because it can be tracked by the number of downloads

When it comes to good taste, Barb Whitelaw
has the market cornered. Barb owns and
operates Saucy Ladies Inc. Starting in her home
kitchen, Barb had friends and relatives tell her that it
was just too good to give away. Starting with 3 items,
she took these to various farmers’markets & craft shows to see if there was
a market and obviously there was. 14 years ago Barb moved to a
storefront location and increased her products from 3 to 19. Her salsa,
perogies, cabbage rolls, etc. are now found in over 50 outlets across
Alberta & B.C. After years of hard work and dedication, today Saucy Ladies
is a STIRRING SUCCESS, but the best part for Barb is the interaction with
customers and seeing the look of pleasure on their faces when they taste
one of her products.

To Detoxify, Or Not?
Most experts agree that it’s not a matter of whether
most of us are exposed to environmental toxins but rather
it’s a matter of how much and how well we can individually
handle it. Over 80,000 chemicals are currently registered
with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) but
less than 5% have ever been tested for human toxicity. So
we really have very little data to judge how much damage
these chemicals are doing.
What we do know is that heavy metals like mercury,
lead, cadmium, and arsenic damage our metabolic
pathways, resulting in cardiovascular disease, high blood

degrade quickly in the environment. Many of these nonPractitioner
metals are endocrine disruptors (meaning they disrupt our
hormones) that interfere with normal biological
processing, or toxins that damage cells directly.
Environmental pollutants are prevalent inside and out
and there is no escaping them. We have moved into the era
of chemical technology, and there is no turning back.
But the situation is not hopeless. Many of us are able
to handle increased toxic exposures with minimal damage
to our health. Others of us can do with a little help from
detoxifying.
Our ability to handle toxins can be complicated and
varies from person to person. It has to do with our ability to
manage inflammation caused by volatile foods or toxins,
our genetic predisposition, and our toxic overload. The
combination of too many stressors can lead to on
overwhelmed detoxification system and subsequent
symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, headaches, autoimmune
disease and loss of cognitive or neurological ability.
Many experts suggest the following steps when
detoxifying:
New Roots Chill Pills
1. Minimize exposure to toxins (eat organic foods
when possible, know what’s in your personal care products,
skip the pesticides around the house, and don’t microwave
plastics.
2. For 1 – 3 weeks, remove gluten, soy, dairy, alcohol,
caffeine, or any other known food that you may be sensitive
to from your diet. This helps to ease the burden on your
liver and digestive system.
3. Drink lots of water to aid the body in clearing toxins.
4. Eat loads of antioxidant-rich fruit, vegetables, fibre
and healthy omega-3 fatty acids to assist in detoxifying.
5. As you end your detox, add foods back one at a time
and watch for symptoms like gas, bloating, or headaches to
appear, indicating food sensitivities.
This simple detox protocol works because it gives your
digestive system a break.

dents can be found in a handful of
small, unexpectedly cultural cities
and in the down-home, homegrown gas station-and-grain-elevator towns sprinkled in between.
With them, you’ll find a true sense
of hospitality, scrumptious places
to eat and ample reasons to raise a
glass. People here eagerly share
their own version of the good life,
whether it’s casting a line into the
Madison River, peering into petroglyph-painted caves, carving
through deep powder or biting
into a Butte pasty. In fact, you’ll find
the definition of the good life
varies quite a bit in the space from
the Gore-Tex-clad recreation outpost of Whitefish to the rough-riding cowboy town of Miles
City. That’s why it makes sense to
break up your journey to the big
state of Montana into regions, and
come back often. (That, and the
whole 94 million-acre thing.)
Each region offers its own
blend of spectacular scenery,
intriguing history, and recreation
galore, as well as its own unique
quirks and specialties, too. Northwest Montana’s Glacier Country
presents the Montana most firsttime visitors tend to picture, with
superlative Crown of the Continent
panoramas and a laid-back cultural
scene.
Over at the opposite side of the
state, southeast Montana’s Custer
Country spins tales of modern day
to wayback-when under its big
skies. In north-central Montana’s
Russell Country, residents preserve
a past from dinosaur days, and in
northeast Montana’s Missouri River
Country, civilization melts away
into endless unbroken prairies.
Mining-roots pride is a hallmark of
southwest Montana’s Gold West
Country’s storied mountain ranges,
while south-central Montana’s Yellowstone Country’s namesake attraction
vies with a host of other
outdoorsy distractions.
If choosing from six
regions seems tricky, try
picking from Montana’s
four seasons. Summertime festivals, wildflowerstrewn hikes, and rockclimbing
excursions
compete with yellowaspen autumns full of fly
fishing, hunting and
squeezing in a last backpacking trip. Come winter, ski hills,
cross-country trails, frozen lakes,
snowmobile trails and neighborhood rinks send outdoorsy types
scrambling for their polar
fleece…until it all melts into
spring, with promises of big whitewater for kayakers, spring hatches
for anglers and invigorating hikes
for the undaunted. It makes the
choice a little easier, though, knowing that some things are a given
year-round: historic hotels, captivating museums, homey cafés and
mineral hot springs, to name a few.
Really, though, it doesn’t matter
if you’ve come in the deep of winter to ski the Rockies or the height
of summer to cast into Fort Peck
Reservoir—Montana guarantees
you’ll go home with stories to tell.
Welcome to Montana.

Missouri River Country

Following Hwy 87 north from
Fort Benton through Havre to
Canada, one travels the western
boundary of what is perhaps the
most magnificent prairie country
in the nation. The US Canadian line,
the 49th parallel of latitude, defines
this wondrous territory on the
north.The southern demarcation is
a bit jagged; staying on the southern fringe of the Missouri River
Breaks to US Hwy 91, it then
abruptly points south a bit before
turning east to trace the Lonesome
Highway 200 to North Dakota
which delineates the eastern
boundary.
A distinct region unto itself, this
place of the Great Plains harbors
unique landforms. Grand scenes
intermingle with smaller bits of
geologic wonder. Space, much of it
undisturbed, is its greatest commodity and an unending sky delivers a feeling of no borders or confinement where a human can
stretch and breathe.
In both its liquid and frozen
form, water shaped the physical
geography in this territory. Ice
sheets advancing out of Canada
slid into northern Montana from
the east edge of the Blackfeet
Reservation by Glacier National
Park, across to North Dakota. These
natural bulldozers gouged and
scraped the land, carrying and
pushing rocks and soils. They “bor-

Travelling in Custer County
BEST TIME TO VISIT
To experience a powwow or a
cattle drive, you’ll want to hit
southeast Montana in the summer.
Fall is decidedly hunting season in
these parts and fly fishers happily
fish on through the winter (and
every other season).
Hikers and mountain bikers can
start exploring as soon as the snow
melts in spring, on through the
summer and into fall, when the
weather is cool enough to keep
sweatiness at bay. In the winter,
cross-country skis and snowshoes
turn the scenery into your playground, and if you want to get in
some downhill turns, head to Red
Lodge Mountain Resort, just an
hour southwest of Billings.
HOW TO GET HERE
I-94 constitutes the main
pipeline, with I-90, MT 59, US 12
and 212 branching off. Logan International Airport in Billings has
direct flights from eight major U.S.
cities.There are also regional flights
into Miles City and Glendive.
Once you are here, remember
to give horseback riders on the
road plenty of clearance, and drive
around them very slowly. If you
encounter a cattle drive crossing
the road, wait for signals from the
cattlemen that it’s safe to move
through.
WHAT TO PACK
If you’re heading to a cattle
drive or working ranch, absolutely
bring your cowboy boots! You’ll
soon discover just
how
functional
they really are. For
general trompingabout, you’ll want
a good pair of tennis shoes or hiking
boots and a few
layers, especially a
wind-resistant
one.
In the winter,
gloves, hat, a warm
parka and snow
boots will most
likely come in
handy.
Dress is casual here, and you’d
be hard-pressed to tell a ranching
baron from a farmhand on clothes
alone. Blue jeans, sweatshirts and
ball caps are the norm.
PHOTOGRAPHING NATIVE
AMERICAN CEREMONIES
Powwows and dances have
deep religious significance and
typically do not allow flash photography. Be sure to have asked
permission before snapping photos at Native American ceremonies.

etiquette while visiting the reservations and how to best enjoy your
experience, contact tribal offices at

FOOD
Food runs the gamut in southeast Montana, from great Asian
picks in Billings to gourmet, locally
grown fare found in unlikely little
ranching towns. Expect “homestyle
prairie food”—beef, steaks and
potatoes. Soak up the town’s character and meet friendly locals by
figuring out where the locals eat in many small towns, the best
restaurant or longest-standing bar
serves as an informal community
gathering spot.
Also, we know beer isn’t food,
but we would be remiss if we didn’t
encourage you to sample southeast Montana’s authentic Western
bars and microbreweries.

Nowhere does cowboy culture
and American Indian lore live on

Yellowstone Country
Billed as “America’s First Playground,” Yellowstone Country is a
study in appealing contrasts. One
minute, you’re sampling Montana’s
legendary “cold smoke” powder, the
next, soaking toastily, neck-deep in
a mineral hot spring. Breakfast
might be home-cooked and served
in a stockyard shack; dinner,
gourmet sushi. Here, rugged peaks
open to prairies, ski bums and
ranchers rub shoulders with creative professionals and college kids,
and you’re just as likely to spot a
grizzly or a wolf as a progressive art
gallery.
As for the region’s namesake,
Yellowstone National Park proves
no exception to the rule of
extremes. Claiming nearly half of
the world’s geysers, America’s first
national park showcases tumbling
waterfalls, calm forest valleys, roaring earth and intricate geothermal
formations. This corner of Montana
opens the door to Yellowstone in
winter—a rare, otherworldly experience when bison wear frosted fur
and geysers steam through a fresh
blanket of white.
True to its contradictory charms,
Yellowstone Country can be a plush
safari or a dirt bagger’s paradise, all
while living up to its “America’s First
Playground” moniker. With luxuri-
ous mountain lodges and bare
bones Forest Service cabins, dude
ranches and day spas, world-class
skiing and self-guided hikes,Yellowstone Country offers an exhilarating
taste of nearly every extreme.

Madison Buffalo Jump State Park
Situated on the edge of a broad valley
carved by the Madison River, this high limestone cliff was used for 2,000 years (as recent as
200 years ago) by Native Americans. It enabled
them to stampede herds of bison in vast numbers off this massive semicircular cliff, utilizing
them for food, clothing, shelter and provisions.
The 'runners' were highly skilled young men
trained for speed and endurance and wearing
buffalo, antelope or wolf skins, lured the bison
to the 'pishkun' or cliff. This was their only
means for survival. Although the introduction
of horses led to the abandonment of this jump
sometime after 1700, the rugged outcropping
now serves as an inspiring monument to the
region's early inhabitants. The park encloses all
the main geographical features of a jump site
and several formations remain to provide visitors with a glimpse of the cultures, which utilized this method of hunting. Tons of bones still
lie buried at the cliff's base, while archaeologists
have located the tepee rings of an extensive vil-
lage. With a little imagination it is easy to visualize the awesome events which occurred here
during a drive, the thunderous roar of the stampede, the dramatic sight of the fall, and the frenzy of activity which followed.
At Madison Buffalo Jump State Park, short
walks provide unique insights into Native
American culture as well as inspiring views of
the valley below. Primitive park designation. The
day use fee is $5 per vehicle.
